hello and welcome to London Business
School's NBA TV I'm Tamsin shillito the
london business school mba program gives
students the opportunity to learn in an
extremely diverse environment using a
variety of different learning methods in
this episode we're going to be taking a
look at glam the global leadership
assessment for managers at the start of
the mba program glam provides the
perfect platform for students to
identify their current skill set using
360 degree feedback and also to
incorporate this into their learning as
they develop as Future Business Leaders
the week-long course is run by faculty
members from our organizational behavior
subject area and also includes expertise
from a team at executive perspectives I
went along speak to John Thomas to find
out more about the simulation sessions
one of the great things about the London
business schools orientation program is
the fact that they actually spend time
teaching leadership and they go a good
deal further in that area by providing
students with a lot of data about
themselves and how they appear as a
leader looking at a number of different
leadership style inventories and then
they also give those students a chance
to practice that leadership glam is a
global leadership assessment for
managers and it's basically the
introductory course that students will
take to organizational behavior and it's
really about giving students the skills
and the awareness of the skills and
knowledge they need to be a global
leader are kind of our main goals are
for students to get a chance to really
better understand who they are and get a
chance to sort of practice and observe
different interpersonal skills and to
come up with an action plan not only for
themselves but also for the teams that
they're going to be working on during
their MBA
they've been running their own business
in a manufacturing industry I'm taking
on different functional roles and as
they've been running their business
they've had chances to form alliances or
license technology from various teams
they've done various exercises focusing
on team effectiveness or peer coaching a
chance for them to practice coaching
other people on their own leadership and
their leadership behavior this is an
exception but it seems like it's more
the rule with you having the highest
rejects it happens to your company more
than any other company well it's normal
that we have the highest because we have
one of the highest market shares
actually in so much as we all know the
organizations are increasingly becoming
team oriented and so in order to succeed
you really need to be able to not only
be a member of a team but also lead
teams and so the students will be
leading and being a member of the team
so that's one thing during glim they
really get some hands-on practical
advice on how to manage and be a member
of a team we touch them the number of
skills so they have a chance to learn a
little more about strategic thinking did
a little bit of their business acumen
and financial acumen to understand how
to interpret financial reports while at
the same time understanding what are the
components that makes for an effective
team or an ineffective team what are
some of the processes they need to have
in place in order for them to be a
high-performing team and what do they
need to bring to the table and what are
some of the strengths that they bring in
a team setting and in a business setting
that they can take with them not only at
their program here in glam but beyond
that in their real life careers as they
return to the workforce I also took the
opportunity to speak some of the
students about what they thought of the
glam experience the best part of the
glam course was the simulation session
for me primarily because our team
dynamics kind of showed the most during
that session we had a few different
personalities on the team and I think
working together kind of raised a lot of
issues and resolved a lot of issues I
like the self-assessment particularly
the 360 and the the neo things I've
never done anything like that before and
I find it quite insightful and
useful to look at myself in that way I
think them give me the opportunity to
combine my experience from home and what
people back home for me from my office I
thought about me combining that with the
knowledge given me in class the aspect
that I liked the most was how every
personality was brought up in them in
that day so we actually got to know more
about each other that we hadn't really
known before so we after that day we
know how we were going to work and help
every single one of us is especially in
a working environment we hope you
enjoyed this episode on glam and thank
you for watching NBA TV do you be sure
to join us next time

hello and welcome to London Business
Schools MBA TV I'm tams in chilo our
student Community has over 70 different
clubs ranging from Finance to media and
saing to Consulting our student clubs
form an integral part of your MBA
experience giving you invaluable
networking opportunities and the chance
to find out about the sector or industry
that you're interested in and of course
the chance to have a lot of fun there
are many conferences taking place
throughout the year and today we're
going to hear from Amy on the energy
club's Flagship
event thank you tamen so here we are at
the global energy Summit 2008 where
Jeremy riim is busy addressing an
international audience about various
Global issues such as the financial
crisis and Global energy
pricing morning and welcome to the third
annual Global energy Summit
hosted by the London Business school's
Energy Club the energy Club is one of
the largest and most active clubs at
London Business School although we host
a number of events throughout the year
the global energy Summit is certainly
the club's Flagship
event so without further Ado I ask that
you please join me in welcoming our
keynote speaker Jeremy riffkin to the
2008 Global energy
Summit we did find some more oil after
1979 but population Rose faster than oil
so if we distributed all the oil to
everyone in the world today all 6
billion people there'd be less per
person now you begin to see the problem
we believe the energy Club at London
Business School is actually a
differentiating factor of the schools um
as we believe this is a unique Club
among all of the top NBA schools in the
world we have over 12200 active members
um it unites both active and alumni
students and it has a wide dep of
networks connected to the business
industry both in the UK and around the
globe the energy Club is great for a
network of people interested in this
area uh they've expanded Beyond
traditional energy into clean tech and
renewable energy I believe the nger club
has some great contacts in the sector
and I thought today had a lot of
interesting speakers the day started
very well with Jeremy riffkin speaking
opening our conference giving us a very
interesting view of what's coming up in
the future in the energy sector and
after that we had the bofs panel and the
energy productivity panel two panels
that are exploring the alternative
investments in the energy world we have
2 120 million people this morning this
morning on the verge of starvation we
have 800 million people In Harm's Way
this is just
2008 what's going to happen in 2009 2010
2011 when I arrived to to London
Business School I was not quite sure if
I wanted to continue in the mining
industry so the energy industry attract
me a lot
and I had the opportunity to go to
events from different top multinational
companies as shell mobile Exon Mobile
total and also from Consulting companies
specialize in the energy sector the
energy Club is involved in a number of
different activities throughout the year
uh I guess the the most work that we do
are through our weekly 101 sessions
where we invite companies from
off-campus to come and give
presentations to all of the students
whether they are mbas myths sloes
executive Etc and the club has three
main objectives to uh awareness career
opportunities and education and we do
that uh through these various activities
so that's it from the energy Club thank
you for watching do stay tuned as we'll
be featuring other clubs around campus
soon see you next time

hello and welcome to London Business
Schools MBA TV I'm Tam and Shilo today
we're going to be looking at what I
think is one of the most exciting and
prominent student clubs on campus with
around 400 student members the London
Business School media Club brings
together firms from television radio
film music marketing publishing and New
Media together with students who have a
background or interest in these
fields the annual London media Summit is
their Flagship event my colleague
Victoria went along to find out
more thanks tamsen the subject of this
year's Summit is a great debate how can
old media survive the media Club has
secured a really high-profile list of
keynote speakers and panel members all
of whom have come to London business
school today to thres out this Hot Topic
the dayong summit has been organized
entirely by London business school
students and has attracted over 200
Industry professionals to find out more
I came along today to speak to some
members of the media club and also some
of the keynote speakers we just launched
Nickelodeon in Africa last month was
Nick
Jun the media Club I think basically
puts on the most active events and
actually has regular events going and I
think that in general the media Club is
able to provide a lot more information
uh to people who don't have any
background in media so if you're looking
to transition ition into really exciting
industry it's the best place to go
because you have people who are on the
ground ready to prepare really engaging
events and I think the London media
Summit is one of them so I've attended a
couple uh talks from people who are in
the industry uh presenting what their
company does what opportunities they
have and also I think um I got pretty
heavily involved in London media Summit
because I wanted to see even more um
platforms being discussed and exposed to
the to the community I think the media
Club is actually going to show me all
the different opportunities there are in
a very concrete way so I can know which
areas I'm interested in and I can make
contacts and um be able to learn more
about that specifically while I'm here
today is about uh how media is changing
and uh how print how film how music and
how TV is going to change facing the
future we got old media changing New
Media coming and can label survive can
Prince survive over this we we choose
together as a committee this team
because it's pretty much up to date we
have a very interesting panelists we
could get in contact with many
interesting people thanks to alumin
thank you contacts on uh from theba
2009's and I think it's a very
interesting thing to to know about today
you have the CR crunch you have people
need to think how they're going to do
business in the future media Club is
pretty active club we do weekly uh lunch
uh meetings and we have some as activ
from the media coming to talk to us as
small group of people and have have this
wonderful Summit as well so it helped me
a lot to understand the industry is
helping me to get networks and have
contacts in the industry organizing the
summit was uh not that that easy job we
had uh we are I'm NBA 2010 so we had
like aam weeks coming home have Works to
do have classes to attend and at the
same time we need to be contacting
people handling Logistics Etc was very
nice I have a big a great uh Team we
have about 15 people and we're pretty
much excited about the whole event the
main activities of the media Club are to
promote uh the media industry within
London Business School and also to help
students at London Business School um
graduate into the media industry whether
they've come from Media or they'd like
to go into media the main uh topic for
the conference today um well the
conference is actually called the great
debate how can old media survive so the
big question today is how can these old
media industries of uh Print TV film and
music how can they keep going when
digital um the digital channel is coming
up so fast um so we've had fantastic
speakers um addressing this issue and I
think the main conclusion is that uh all
the industries need to change and they
need to see it as an opportunity rather
than a threat I've been looking after
the marketing and ticket sales along
with three other people so at the
beginning of term that was sorting out
what our marketing strategy was going to
be what kind of people we wanted we
wanted at the conference what the price
of the tickets would be um and then
getting all the collateral together um
and posters up and the website up and
selling the tickets and sending out
millions of emails um but it's been a
great term for for that to happen the
speakers that we've had at the event
have been um Mark Thompson the director
general of the BBC we've had Stuart till
uh who is the UK um chairman of the film
Council and we've had Alan rusbridger
the managing editor of the Guardian um
so some you know really senior
practitioners from the industry the
media Club do a whole host of things
they they they run weekly media lunches
where we have people from industry who
come in and just we can sit and chat for
two hours about a specific area on top
of that there's the conference that
we've got today and as well as that
there's also a trek going to LA to meet
people in the media industry over there
so it's a very busy schedule just with
them I think there are about 50 members
of the media Club there may be more um
within that there's obviously a core
group of people who do the organization
um but what's great is that everyone's
very well connected so if you want to go
into a specific area or find out about a
specific type of media there's always
somebody to talk to who can point you in
the right direction I think the media
Club is vital for people who want to get
job in the media industry um as you
would probably expect there's a lot of
networking a lot of connections that are
important in this industry and this is a
great way to open doors that you didn't
think were there before and also just to
find out about what's going on what are
The Cutting Edge trends at the moment
today's Summit is the sixth annual
London media Summit we have the event uh
every year in the fall and uh today's
event is about uh London media Summit
2008 how will old media survive uh the
discussion is about bringing to light
changes in the media industry uh uh
focusing on four specific sectors film
television print and uh music it's less
about getting in contact with different
Industries and getting more about
getting in contact with specific people
um the the club has been a a a great
launching pad I mean just to have the
London Business School brand and the the
media Club sitting behind you allows you
to go out and talk to pretty much anyone
in the media industry under the cover of
being a student um you know I can I can
phone up the president and uh or say the
uh the CEO and chairman of MTV
International and uh and he he agrees to
come down and speak at at an event that
uh that that we're running so you know
and we can do that on a weekly basis in
fact we hel we hold weekly speaking
events that uh that you know bring high
quality High Caliber speakers down to
down to campus we have um over a
thousand members uh you know 600 alumni
400 current students um we've got a a
very active crew of of 50 students who
come out regularly to uh to to speaking
events and and
you know to to various degrees the club
Services all of these members with with
with uh speaking events and the the the
summit being the key Flagship event of
the calendar this week the event is the
media Summit it's large and atypical of
normal events that we run but we have
weekly speaker sessions we have the
media Summit that is happening today and
then we have the London media Trek um
which takes a bunch of students to Los
Angeles and that happens in mid December
we've got a fantastic Tre organized we
have in the day sessions with senior
companies NBC Universal we have the head
of digital there um we're seeing MTV
networks we're seeing ESPN we're seeing
some music companies I mean it's a
back-to-back schedule then in the
evening we're going to be doing
networking drink sessions so for example
one evening I'm organizing a night
called Brits in Hollywood and I've got a
bunch of mates that work for BBC America
and they're going to be coming and
having drinks with us at a poolside bar
somewhere and we're going to be getting
to know what it's like to be a Brit
living and working in Hollywood what we
believe is that the media industry is
going through unprecedented change that
change is coming as a result of all
sorts of new technology because of that
change media companies and the media
industry need leaders and they need
leaders who have got strong business
planning skills entrepreneurship skills
marketing skills all the skills that are
taught at London Business School if
you'd like to find out more about the
media club or any of other student clubs
you can visit the Student Association
website thank you very much for watching
and do join us again next time for
another episode of NBA TV

### MBA TV - Episode 4 (Uncut v.1) | London Business School

thank you
hello and welcome to London Business
school's MBA TV I'm Tamsin Shillito
today we're going to be looking at what
I think is one of the most exciting and
prominent student clubs on campus with
around 400 student members the London
Business School media Club brings
together firms from television radio
film music marketing publishing and New
Media together with students who have a
background or interest in these fields
the annual London media Summit is their
Flagship event my colleague Victoria
went along to find out more
thanks tamzin the subject of this year's
Summit is a great debate how can old
media survive the media Club has secured
a really high profile list of keynote
speakers and panel members all of whom
have come to London business school
today to thrash out this Hot Topic the
day-long summit has been organized
entirely by London business school
students and has attracted over 200
Industry professionals to find out more
I came along today to speak to some
members of the media club and also some
of the keynote speakers
Nickelodeon in Africa I'm here at the
media Summit because I was kindly
invited it's a privilege and honor for
me really because I've been following a
school for some time and it's really
grown into one of the oh I don't know
best institutions in the world which is
great very International which comes
partly by being here in London and you
know just a great location and sort of
you know in the middle of things and has
had great leadership over the years but
most importantly it's drawn some
fantastic students who in the media
World anyway I Look to be as a future
media Moguls of the world television can
be a tremendous Force for good but it
can also be a force for not so good so I
think it's a mixed record around the
world but I think generally speaking
media tends to draw some really talented
people and I see it everywhere in all
countries around the world and I think
therefore the media is fairly well run
it can always be better but it needs
younger people it needs more leadership
and it needs a new set of thinking which
will happen generally because media does
tend to track very good people London
business school students are
international which is so important in
this day and age because we live in a
globalized world and you know to have a
Melting Pot really a school like London
Business School of made up of people
from all around the world is really
really important and being here in
London the most Cosmopolitan city in the
world I think helps a lot too so I'm
very impressed with the students from
London Business School London has really
grown to be the center the global
capital of the world so I think it's
very well placed for media but I think
ultimately as a as a media leader you
got to look at all different parts of
the world not just London and you don't
necessarily have to come from that
respective country but you have to think
in a globalized world we're in a much
more multi-polar world it's not just
dominate by one or two or three
countries it's it's many many different
sources sources of cool sources of
influence so I think a student and a
future leader from media coming from
London yes we're in a great spot here by
being in this globalized capital of the
world but you also need to think as a
media leader all around the world and
not hesitate to move around the world
it's about embracing New Media and it's
about not being afraid of it but
actually using it to improve your
business deepen and strengthen your
relationships with the audience and
looking at a whole new way of content
for example what we do is we our
creative teams now look at not just the
television they look at the small screen
they look at multiple screens and the
content can actually be a much more
enriching experience as a result of all
the different different screens and
likewise there's unlimited opportunity
for other business streams but it has to
be done in an Innovative way and again
not being fearful of it but embrace it
so I chose to come to this conference
because I thought the London Business
School were putting together an event
that actually had a lot of uh content to
it my role was to participate in a panel
that was on the future of Music labels
we spent quite a bit of time talking
about it and I think the the
agreement is that music certainly as a
business is going to continue to be very
very lucrative the role of a music label
is going to have to transform pretty
radically in order to to be able to reap
the benefits that they've had in the
past having an MBA from London Business
School is is a big deal to basically
open doors and be able to participate in
different types of companies you know we
invest in very early stage startups so
sort of two people in a garage trying to
change the world and certainly I think
that an MBA either can be one of the
creators of that idea or can can join
one of those companies
well I am one of the panelists today in
the conference and uh we're talking
about the future of studios and the
future of film content and of course
that's right at the heart of love film
you know we originally built over the
last few years a business model that was
based on the DVD however over the last
couple of years or so we began to
migrate that into digital format into
downloading into helping people go to
the cinema and other types of ways of
watching and finding out about film so
it's important to us we we're at the I
suppose Cutting Edge of what is
happening and what the evolutions are
taking place which is why a summit like
this we think is is quite important over
the last few years love film has sort of
began to develop a relationship with
London Business School this year for the
first time we had an intern actually in
the offices as well who was you know
sort of between years in his in his MBA
and did a great job for us you know and
we really do see that there's great
talent and great people who come to the
London Business School so for us taking
part in the media Summit was sort of the
next extension of that maybe sharing
some experiences but also the
opportunity to meet and work with some
really you know great businesses and
some great people that I think will be
useful for us as a business I think this
is great for the London Business School
to hold this type of event not only does
it set itself apart from other business
schools where you know you can
demonstrate the the pull of getting
industry leaders and Industry Chief
Executives around a table to talk about
real issues but I think it's just
fascinating for the students to have
access to you know people at a very
senior level in the media world and to
be able to talk to them address
questions and be able to find out what's
really going on because part of the
challenge is obviously learning but also
part of the challenge is what comes next
and I think well-informed people who
know what's happening next are going to
be much more attractive out there in the
marketplace I think that future media
leaders need to have a really good
understanding across so many different
more SEC sectors than they used to
before if you think about the
convergence of TV with mobile with
online with the PC with other devices
that are taking place it's not just good
enough now to know about one part of the
industry you've got to know about
everything that's going on to put it
together I think one of the biggest
single threats in the industry at the
moment is the same probably affecting
most Industries which what is going to
be the impact of a Slowdown in
expenditure whether that expenditure
being home entertainment or whether it
be on cars I think is going to be an
impact historically the entertainment
business has done well in a recessionary
environment because people stay at home
and they watch more DVDs and they watch
more films
but I think there are still going to be
winners and losers those people that can
provide Choice the people that can
provide the right value and ease of use
I think are going to do well what
separates to me a good person from an
average person is do they have a real
passion and drive to do well in their
particular sector or area they're in and
media probably amongst all areas is one
that requires a pattern and drive bigger
than anything else you know it's also
got a lot of egos in it and a lot of big
companies in it right so you've really
got to be good at what you do within in
that environment so getting that passion
for media getting that exposure to lots
of different companies early on and
getting that exposure to some of the
trends and convergence and all those
things that are going on is I think
going to be really critical for the MBA
students you know and if you decide that
media is the place for you and let me
tell you it's a fantastic industry in
which to work in then you know just
focus on it go for it because you can
really make a difference
well in my speech I try to capture the
the challenge that broadcasters like the
BBC ITV and channel 4 face which is
partly about the challenge to retain
audiences but also the challenge of
figuring out the best way of
getting a business model of monetization
to to ensure that we can go on investing
in really high quality content I think
the media leaders of the future will
need quite a few new skills I think
they'll really need to know about
technology and I think they'll also need
to be
Adept at getting
Creative Technologies and creative
content people together to work together
to create the products and services of
the future
the single biggest threat is around
fragmentation and therefore a loss of
audience
but the great opportunity I think is
that the Public's hunger for really
outstanding content
and also often for a shared experience
of coming together to enjoy and be
inspired by a piece of content is as
great as ever I think this is
potentially a very exciting time for MBA
students who are thinking about entering
media
we need new business models we need
entrepreneurship we need help in radical
transformation of our organization so
potentially this could be a very
exciting it's always a higher risk but a
very very exciting place to have a
career
if you'd like to find out more about the
media club or any of our other student
clubs you can visit the Student
Association website
thank you very much for watching and do
join us again next time for another
episode of NBA TV
thank you

### MBA TV - Episode 3 | London Business School
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-QvEVMfr38

hello and welcome to LW and Business
Schools MBA TV today we're going to be
focusing on volunteers day volunteers
day is an opportunity for some of our
students to help out in the local
community on a variety of different
projects for example they could be
Consulting with local schools getting
their hands dirty on conservation work
in some of our local parks or thinking
of fundraising
ideas as well as helping in a good cause
volunteers day is a great opportunity
for students to meet other members of
their class today we sent Amy out to
Kensington Gardens to meet some of our
student volunteers and find out about
the project they're working on
there thank you tams in so here we are
at Kenington Gardens where a group of
our students from various degree
programs have come together to help out
the Royal parks with a few gardening
projects can you tell us what the whole
idea of today is and what you're
actually doing here in Kensington
Gardens sure yeah a group of us uh both
MBA students and Masters and finance
students have come together uh just to
help out the Royal Park service we are
clearing flower beds and we are
gardening here we are getting rid of old
flowers I mean summer flowers and we are
preparing bed for Plantation for winter
flowers here I love actually getting
involved in conservation work because
you could actually see the tangible uh
results of your efforts and that's why I
chose this particular project it's a
good chance to catch up with some people
that uh I don't have you know frequent
contact with because of our arrangement
in the study groups and our streams it's
a good chance to to talk with people
that maybe I met a couple of times but
having had a chance to talk to you
regularly so that's it from Kensington
Gardens and I'm going to hand you back
over to
tamsen thank you Amy now back here on
campus there are a number of other
activities happening here's a brief look
at some of
them the project we've been working on
here today is a collaboration between
London Business school students and
students of gable Hall which is a very
large Secondary School in Essex creative
Partnerships have been working in Gable
hall for a couple of years now and
really looking at things like lifelong
learning and skills um that perhaps
London Business School could transfer to
students at gable hall because whilst
Gable Hall students are very good at
passing exams and are very high
achieving their skills for life are not
as good today we are working with a
group of very young creative people and
what we are what our primary goal is uh
is for us to help them realize uh that
they have Ambitions and help them maybe
realize even their Ambitions the other
thing I'm doing is also I'm building
relationships both with the school and
uh my colleagues here at the school I'm
um doing a Learning and Development
workshop with the full-time MBA students
at London Business School um a little
bit like The Apprentice the full-time
MBA students are tasked with bringing
back very very high value oneoff
donations of intangible experiences
which then um my Oxfam team will package
up and sell thereby creating an income
stream for Oxfam three bits of
information what's the experience just
very broadly um your contact details and
the donor's contact details this is
something totally different from what
I've done before previously I'd done
things like running um raising charity
and this is more kind of business ideas
and uh this this is a very unique kind
of a voluntary project so it kind of
made me uh want to delve into it and I
think the main things that I'm going to
take personally in out of this volunteer
day it's it's a personal satisfaction of
being to contributing with my with my
own time that I could probably be doing
something else something fun something
even academic and but instead I'm I'm
doing something towards a good a good
cause oam's causes are basically
reduction of poverty in the world so if
I can can give my own um experience and
advices in ways that can raise money for
for their cost I think that's a great a
great thing that I can probably do so
that's it for volunteers day thank you
for watching we'll see you next time

### MBA TV - Episode 2 (Uncut) | London Business School
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAqRbvXq2m4

Idioma: en

hello and welcome to London Business
School's NBA TV I'm Tamsin shillito with
applications now being taken for next
year's MBA program the class of 2011 we
thought we take a closer look at the
application process and will be speaking
to staff and students later on in the
program applying to business school
requires a certain amount of preparation
so we recommend you start working on
your application as soon as you can
today we have the opportunity to speak
to David Simpson a colleague of mine
from the admissions committee and
associate director of the MBA program
about his advice on the application
process the candidates looking at
applying to business school what's the
first thing they should be doing
attending business calls a big decision
and it shouldn't be an easy decision you
should expect to spend a lot of time
searching through why you want to do an
MBA and it's just the right time for you
as well as that you've got so many
choices of what kind of school to attend
you're going to look at the location of
the school to on a city school do on a
campus environment how closely connected
to big recruiters do you want to be
you've got to think about student
community what kind of people do you
want to learn with these kind of
decisions are the big ones to take
before you even start putting pen to
paper and I'm thinking about submitting
an application and what is the most
important thing you're looking for for
an admissions application and do you
give different way to into different
aspects of the application it's
important that you tell us about your
past experiences it's important that you
put across some of yourself to the
application as well as much as it
possible there's no particular waiting
system you have to have done well in
your your undergraduate and any post
graduates and studies your work
experience and your track record needs
to be successful whether it's over three
years over 15 years we want to assume
progression really we're looking to see
how much you will add to the campus
environment how much would you add to
your to your study group to the
classroom environment and to the
community as a whole but increase in
volume that we've seen in applications
should candidates be differentiating
themselves and if so how can they do
that do receive a lot of applications so
yet to be successful you do have to
stand out from the crowd the most
important thing to do is
honestly portray yourself as a candidate
we want to hear about you want you to
tell us some stories through the essays
of why you want to take an MBA and why
you're considering london business
school so read the questions carefully
that's the important thing to do and
then apply your experiences and your
knowledge those questions talking about
adding value and contributing and what
ways can students add value both in the
classroom and outside what we really
want to see is evidence that people get
involved get involved on campus lead a
club whether it's a professional club
like the private equity club organize a
conference like the women in business
conference or go on tour with a sports
club you know and some of these social
clubs trips abroad are extremely
important and life as a student is not
just about passing the exams getting the
job it's so much more than that within
the 15 to 21 months one of the most
common questions we get is around
references what advice can you give to
somebody about selecting their referees
and also what are the admissions
committee actually looking for when they
read references we're looking for two
references for each candidate we prefer
professional references would very much
like to see a reference from your line
manager if possible if not you can also
look at peers or even suppliers and
customers they tell us a lot because
they give us an external view point you
should only really select people who
know you well they need to know you well
enough to be able to answer those
questions in detail so choosing the CEO
of your organization isn't really going
to add value unless they know you very
well we're not going to be impressed
just because you've chosen a big name or
somebody senior in your organization
it's the quality and depth of
information it counts in the essay
questions is a strong focus about post
mba roles do candidates really need to
know what they want to do after they
graduate it's important that candidates
have a good idea of where they want
their MBA education to take them it's
important that candidates have a
realistic understanding of how their
previous experience prior to the NBA
along with the skills and projects and
experiences that you gained throughout
your time on the program where that will
take you you know you're the raw
material through the process and all the
opportunities you get at the school
through career services through the
clubs and through the education you
receive can get you to a certain point
so we do want to see a sense of
direction
lana business school is very
international do candidates need to have
international experience when applying
it's important that our candidates have
a global perspective or they're
interested in building their global
perspective not every candidate comes in
with international work experience some
candidates had lived and worked in many
different countries and speak many
languages but there are plenty of only
ever lived and worked in their own
country what's important is of our open
mind and the desire to learn from others
who have nothing in common with your
background what would your three main
pieces of advice beat somebody that's
looking at putting an application
together right now to make sure that the
time is right for you to take an mba do
plenty of research on the schools you're
applying to focus in so at London
Business School focusing on and what we
offer and be honest in your answers

hello and welcome to London Business
schools's MBA TV I'm tamin Shilo with
applications now being taken for next
year's MBA program the class of 2011 we
thought we'd take a closer look at the
application process and we'll be
speaking to staff and students later on
in the program applying to business
school requires a certain amount of
preparation so we recommend you start
working on your application as soon as
as you can today we have the opportunity
to speak to David Simpson a colleague of
mine from the admissions committee and
associate director of the MBA program
about his advice on the application
process the candidates looking at
applying to business school what's the
first thing they should be doing
attending business school is a big
decision and it shouldn't be an easy
decision you should expect to spend a
lot of time searching through uh why you
want to do an MBA and is this the right
time for you as well as that you've got
so many choices of what kind of school
to attend you got to look at the
location of the school do you want a
city school do you want a campus
environment how closely connected to Big
recruiters do you want to be you've got
to think about student Community what
kind of people do you want to learn with
these kind of decisions are the big ones
to take before you even start putting
pen to paper and thinking about
submitting an application and what is
the most important thing you're looking
for for an admissions application and do
you give different waiting to different
aspects of the application it's
important that um you tell us about your
past experiences it's important that you
put across some of yourself to the
application as well as much as possible
there's no particular waiting system uh
you have to have done well in your your
undergraduate and any postgraduate um
studies your work experience and your
track record needs to be successful
whether it's over three years over 15
years we want to assume progression but
really we're looking to see um how much
you will add to the campus environment
with increase in volume that we've seen
in applications should candidates be
differentiating themselves and if so how
can they do that that we do receive a
lot of applications so y to be
successful you do have to stand out from
the crowd the most important thing to do
is honestly portray yourself as a
candidate we want to hear about you we
want you to tell us some stories through
the essays of why you want to take an
NBA and why you're considering London
Business School talking about adding
value and contributing in what ways can
students add value both in the classroom
and outside what we really want to see
is evidence that people will get
involved get involved on campus lead a
club whether it's a professional club
like the private Equity Club organize a
conference like the women in business
conference or go on tour with a sports
club you know and and some of these
Social Club U trips abroad are are
extremely important and life as a
student is not just about passing the
exams getting the job it's so much more
than that within the 15 to 21 months one
of the most common questions we get is
around references what advice can you
give to somebody about selecting their
referees and also what are the
admissions committee actually looking
for when they read references we're
looking for two references for each
candidate we prefer professional
references we'd very much like to see a
reference from your line manager if
possible if not you could also look at
peers or even suppliers and customers um
they tell us a lot because they give us
an external Viewpoint you should only
really select people who know you well
they need to know you well enough to be
able to answer those questions in detail
so choosing the CEO of your organization
isn't really going to add value unless
they know you very well in the essay
questions there's a strong Focus about
post MBA roles the candidate really need
to know what they want to do after they
graduate it's important that candidates
have a realistic understanding of how
their previous experience prior to the
MBA along with the the skills and
projects and experiences that you gain
throughout your time on the program
where that will take you you know you're
the raw material through the process and
all the opportunities you get at the
school through Career Services through
the clubs and through the education you
receive can get you to a certain point
Lana business school is very
International do candidates need to have
international experience when applying
it's important that our candidates have
a Global Perspective or they're
interested in building their Global
Perspective not every candidate comes in
with International work experience
what's important is a our open mind and
the desire to learn from others who have
nothing in common with your background
and we expect all of our students to to
really be focusing on London business
school because we're one of very few
schools that can offer that diversity in
the study group and in the classroom so
that's the official line from the
admissions team you can view the full
extended interview with David on NBA TV
uncut we're now going to take the
opportunity to speak to some of our
current students about their views and
advice on the admissions process the
most challenging part about the
application process uh was really having
a think about what my personal story was
and where I'm going to be going in the
future uh you know it's it's very easy
to uh just shoot off a root learned
answer that uh people expect you to say
but uh you need to drill down and really
think about what you want to do and what
you want to achieve and how you're going
to achieve that well I like a lot of
other people that apply here and to many
other um really top-notch Business
Schools are rather involved with their
jobs and so really the difficult part
was actually balancing um working
full-time and really being able to do my
job to the best of my abilities and
still really doing my applications to
the best of my abilities as well and
making sure those essays were just right
before I turned them in my one top tip
for someone preparing their application
be think about what it is that you want
to do put it down on paper read it again
see if that really is what you'd want to
do read it again and just continue to
edit until you get it right you really
have to research the school and see
where you're going to be the best fit
because each school does have its own
particular culture and if you're
spending two years intensely with a A
you significantly large group of people
you need to know that you want to fit in
I wish somebody had told me to apply a
little bit earlier I applied quite late
and it's there's a lot of things you
have to pull together and it was quite a
rush and quite difficult to fit that in
alongside my job
thank you for watching and do remember
that as well as NBA TV there are plenty
of opportunities to find out more about
London Business School and our MBA
program including the blog and new
interactive brochure and numerous events
taking place around the globe see you
next
time

hello and welcome to London Business
Schools MBA TV I'm your host hamen Shilo
so what is MBA TV well over the next
academic year we'll bring you a series
of short programs about what's happening
in the world of NBA here at London
Business School we'll feature interviews
with staff and faculty cover NBA events
throughout the year bring you details of
the course content and program and of
course we'll include the highlights and
challenges of being an MBA student in
fact we hope to have some of the current
students presenting for the NBA TV
programs in the near future so do look
out for that well we begin this series
with a look at the first day of our new
Academic Year after meeting each other
and finding out which streams and study
groups they've been alleg to as students
congregated for a photo on the front
lawn before being whisked off to the
world famous Lords cricket ground for
two days of orientation and networking
and it's from Lords that my colleague
Amy brings this
report thank you tamson hi there and
welcome to Lords cricket ground where
we're busy welcoming our new class of
MBA 2010 at London Business School for
their orientation week where most
importantly they'll be working with each
other meeting their new class and also
getting introduced to various members of
staff and also faculty well the purpose
of uh this week is to really welcome you
properly to the school uh and to set the
scene and get you in the right kind of
mindset inside and outside of the
classroom you're going to come across
different ways of making decisions
different ways of doing business
different ways of thinking about things
consider the NBA as a journey uh it's
like a roller coaster it's you know it's
going to be highs and lows whilst here
at LS we took the opportunity to speak
to one of our inspirational keynote
speakers exron Gamble and current
executive in Residence at London
Business School Mohan MO
I talk to students uh usually at the
beginning of their entry into the school
and then I exchange with them 1 hour
sessions all their 2year career by
advising them and coaching them and
helping them I tend to be a little
provocative what they say they want to
do when you probe and like peeling the
onion you get to the soft core you
immediately understand maybe that is not
the right thing for them and then I
spend time
once I am sure that what they are doing
how can I help them to achieve that
dream it is in your mind what you can do
with yourself look at me what you want
to do at this point is not to make them
totally different but use their skill
sets to achieve even greater Heights
than they are able to achieve today we
also took the opportunity to speak to
some of our students and their thoughts
on the beginning of their MBA can you
tell me what you're looking forward to
most in the next two years the next two
years in on business school I'm looking
to do actually a couple of things one
really learn the subjects I really
wanted to learn all this time strategy
Finance two uh make new friends make
connections for the lifetime probably
the thing I'm looking forward to the
most is meeting all the people in the
course all the different nationalities
backgrounds and cultures interacting
with the kind of diverse group of people
here I mean the reason I chose to come
here was because it is by far in a way
the most international business school
around the opportunity to work with
people from all over the world from
amazing places and to learn from them
that's that's what I'm most looking
forward to name any profession you'll
find one from our class name any country
you'll find one from our class name any
language you will find one from our
class and that's London Business School
London experience World impact that's it
from Lord's cricket ground and the end
of day one of orientation for the class
of MBA 2010 I'm off to join the students
now for dinner and another opportunity
for them to get to know each other and
socialize back over to tamsen thank you
Amy that's it for this inaugural MBA TV
program I hope you enjoyed it and we
look forward to bringing you more over
the coming weeks and months if you have
any ideas for features for our program
please be sure to get in touch online
thanks again for watching and be sure to
join us next time
