good morning good afternoon good evening
everybody I just saw that the number of
participants had rapidly jumped over 500
people who are joining us on on the call
today so I want to thank everyone for
doing their parents and students it's
it's great to see you I can't see you
you can see me but I'm so pleased we get
the stuff that you need to connect this
is this an important day for me among
other things I'm celebrating two weeks
on the job and when I think about that
you know I
the etymology of this of the quotes may
you live in interesting times is a bit
contested but it does feel like it's the
reality today we're certainly living in
incredibly interesting times and when I
think about my own personal reactions to
that I really think about to be words
it's been pretty exhausting I think it's
exhausting for us all but it's also
extraordinarily exhilarating to be in
this to be in this environment you know
when I think about the crisis I have a
couple of reactions to it at the biggest
picture level the first one is that the
crisis on many dimensions is
accelerating trends that were already
there and I think that's absolutely true
in the world of higher education so more
online more use of technology pressure
on the value proposition of higher
education issues of affordability and
access and diversity and racial justice
are accelerated and and I think we're
also witnessing pressures with respect
to D globalization for a university like
USC that has had there's been so
internationalized for decades the second
thing I'd say about the crisis is that
it's happening in real time
you know normally we think about
universities has been kind of sleepy
places that aren't aren't affected in
the same way don't have the kind of Just
In Time pressures that exist for example
in the corporate world well that's not
true today I think it's probably a first
for universities that we're having to
react in real-time to events in in way
that are affecting lots of the economy
but but they're affecting universities
in a in a stronger way than for many
sectors you know universities aren't as
hard hits by the crisis as for example
airlines and hotels but universities are
in the density business and density is
the enemy in the pandemic so crisis in
real time is something I think about all
the time
the last internet very introductory
thing that I wanted to say was just to
you know I'm a big believer in trying to
make lemonade out of lemons and and one
thing that's really true is that my
transition to being dean of the school
has just been accelerated and made much
more intense than it would have been
under other circumstances so I certainly
feel in a better position to be taking
on the deanship of the school now than I
would have been under quote-unquote
normal circumstances so so let's think a
little bit about the world that we're
living in today you know the bottom line
I think for us all right now is
uncertainty and when I think about
uncertainty analytically you know I
unpack it into three components the
first one is just the sheer
unpredictability of events the second
dimension is the speed of change and the
third dimension is lack of coherence
around facts
state of play and and we you know we see
that with the coronavirus and everything
that's surrounding it I think on a daily
basis so let me react to uncertainty in
two ways the first one is just to
acknowledge how anxious we all are I
include myself in that group and how
many concerns we have because just
living in a world of radical uncertainty
is a very very difficult thing I think
that creates a leadership challenge and
in you when I think about that
leadership challenge I my bottom line is
to be real and I
being real means first acknowledging
your limitations I don't know all the
answers you're going to hear a lot of I
don't know today from you but it also
entails saying we're all in this
together if we are collectively we're
just going to do better and I think a
way that a leader can catalyze a
collective activity is by being both
authentic and transparent by being
really open about what's going on again
what we know and what we don't know so
that's certainly the leadership
challenge that I'm I hope to rise to and
I know or all leaders are trying to do
that right now
and I will tell you that we're you know
we can't answer all the questions in a
one-hour zoom call so we're building an
FAQ section on the Marshall website that
we hope will answer many of your
questions or tell you what we don't know
and will continually update that in
real-time because literally things are
evolving in real time let me go
philosophical for a second and I've been
thinking about quotations that speak to
me in this moment and and I've got four
for you and the first one is is
something I saw a couple just a couple
of days ago from a CEO talking about the
world right now and the person said
we've made more major decisions in the
past 90 days than in the last 10 years
and I think that's so true for so many
of us and it's certainly true on
University campuses at USC and at
Marshall and the second quotation I've
been thinking about is thinking about
headwinds right we tend to talk about
headwinds and tailwind and there are a
lot of headwinds out there in the world
right now but Winston Churchill who
seems to have had great quotations for
almost everything once said kites rise
highest against the wind not with it so
I think that's inspiring yes there are
some headwinds out there but if we can
rise the kite even faster and take
advantage of the headwinds that's
exactly the right way
third quotation for me is the role of
business schools and and I've thought
about this for a long time as ideas into
outcomes business schools are in the
business of incubating ideas but at
least as importantly figuring out how to
translate them into outcomes outcomes
that will matter but I saw recently that
I'm not the first person to think that
way in fact the German poet Goethe I
said it much more eloquently than I
could a couple hundred years ago and
here's here's the Goethe knowing is not
enough we must apply willing is not
enough we must do and I say amen to that
that's exactly how I think about
business schools and then my last
quotation is more broadly about the role
of Education and and I watched last
night a fantastic documentary on Nelson
Mandela and bringing the Rugby World Cup
to South Africa in 1995 a visionary and
courageous thing that Nelson Mandela did
as the new president of South Africa and
Mandela is spared once education is the
most powerful weapon you can use to
change the world and that resonates so
powerfully for me because coming to the
United States for higher education
radically transformed my life in ways
that I could never have anticipated so I
just appreciate so profoundly the
transformative power of higher education
and certainly it's why I'm so motivated
to now to be Dean of the Marshall school
and see if we can change the world
through our education

welcome to the new Academic Year I hope
everyone had a wonderful summer and
you're as excited as I am about the New
Year it's a great time to be at Marshall
the opportunities technology is creating
are incredible take electric vehicles
for example the internal combustion
engine was arguably the greatest
innovation of the 20th century now
traditional engines will likely be gone
by the middle of this century and who
knows if we'll even be driving ourselves
by then that's the power of business
Innovation but at the same time business
responsibilities are greater than ever
before and not only when it comes to
sustainability this year for example
Disney had to take a stand on education
laws in Florida while McDonald's had to
decide what to do about its stores in
Russia 10 years ago C CEOs would have
said addressing those issues just
weren't part of their job not today
customers and employees just expect more
of their leaders way more that's why at
Marshall we're focusing on helping our
students develop both the technical
skills and the leadership skills needed
to thrive in today's business world and
this year we have a lot of incredible
new programs and initiatives to look
forward to from new undergraduate
emphases and Joint degrees to
initiatives in data science and digital
ethics to multiple investment funds
where students make real investments in
real dollars to our newly named Peter
arkley Institute for risk management and
Innovative ESG courses the opportunities
at Marshall are just incredible jump in
with both
feet

welcome to a new Academic Year at
Marshall as we embark on another
exciting year I couldn't be more
energized we're committed to becoming
the world's leading comprehensive

to get there our goal is to combine the
very best academic programs at all
levels with second to none research
thought leadership and Industry
engagement all that amplifi by the
incomparable Trojan

launching our fifth interdisiplinary
program the business of innovation in
partnership with the ivin and young
Academy it'll combine all the creativity
of Iya with all the business knowhow of
Marshall unique is a high bar but I
think this is a unique program joining
other real innovators at Marshall like
our AI for business and our business of
cinematic Arts degrees we're introducing
new opportunities for our MBA students
also to earn one of our specialized
master's degrees during their time with
us and we've inaugurated a new career
Launchpad week at the beginning of the
MBA to help our students shape the rest
of their degrees and to position them
for Career Success we know that
enhancing the technical fluency of our
students must be combined with a real
focus on leadership and we're in the
Vanguard of change when it comes to
leadership education by focusing on
human skills like authenticity and
transparency compassion and empathy and
self-awareness and
self-reflection we offer our
undergraduates six different leadership
program opportunities a real Rarity
among undergraduate Business Schools and
we're rolling out a new weeklong social
leadership initiative in the middle of
the MBA dedicated to implementing social
and environmental leadership Across The
Core Business
disciplines at Marshall we continue to
work to further president Carol fault's
moonshots for USC one of them concerns
Athletics with USC's entry into the Big
10 we're bringing together Athletics and
academics by launching a new class at
the Nexus of sports Business Media
technology and society and later this
fall we'll also co-host a conference
with USC annenburg bringing together
leaders from all facets of sport to
brainstorm what's next from fandom and
influences to sports as an asset
class a marshal education is about much
more than just getting a business degree
it's about embarking on a lifelong
journey to shape our world it's a world
of both unlimited potential and
unparalleled respons posibility and
we're developing Leaders with the
knowledge skills and commitment not only
to succeed in their own lives but also
to have an enduring impact on the lives
of others I am so honored to be part of
that Journey
