to welcome you to this london business
school
masters in finance day um my name is
david simpson and i'm the recruitment
admissions director for the mba in the
masters and finance programs here at
london business school i'm joined today
by my colleague who's going to be
hosting most of the day senior global
recruitment manager charlotte smith
we're going to spend some time talking
about our unique specialist
post-experience masters in finance
program covering both the content and
experiences we'll have senior colleagues
on the program team for they're the
people who lead the design and operation
of the program uh recruitment admissions
colleagues who can talk to you about how
to reply and very importantly students
and alumni in sessions as well we have
three sessions for the day and all will
offer different things in your
preparation for applying to the program
we're going to start the day now though
with a director's chat between myself
charlotte and debra fisher the myth and
mfa program director
thank you david and hello everybody i'm
delighted that you could join us today
as david mentioned we have some
fantastic insights into the world of
finance that's lbs for you today
starting with this conversation with our
masters in finance directors so i'm
going to start the day with a little
pre-warning we love an acronym at lbs
and as much as i try not to i can't help
but use them sometimes so i know they're
very common in the world of finance too
so i have no doubt that you're going to
learn quickly
but first lesson of the day let's just
run through some that you will
definitely need to know moving forward
in your journey so we have lbs which
you'll hear us say all day all day and
that is london business school of course
we have myth which is masters in finance
so we don't say mif we usually just say
myth if you see a pt or an ft on any
slides they mean part-time or full-time
because we offer the matters in finance
in both structures
and another very important one is pj
which stands for peter johnson our
senior recruitment and admissions
manager for the myth and so if you are
successful with your application you
will absolutely meet pj later on down
the line and we're going to see them a
little bit later today as well
so let's get started with our first
conversation of the day and i am
delighted to be joined by debra fisher
program director for the masters in
financial analysis which is our
pre-experience master's programme and
our masters in finance programme thank
you so much for joining us today deborah
[Music]
lovely to be here
thank you and david simpson who you've
just met our recruitment and admissions
director for the mba and masters in
finance
so deborah i thought maybe we could
start this conversation with you this is
the first time that you've been able to
join us for one of our experience days
as you're a new member to the myth team
and so since october you've been
directing for both the mfa and the myth
so why was it important for lbs to have
a director over both finance degrees and
how does that benefit our students at
london business school
thanks charlotte so
i think traditionally we know that at
lbs we are an incredibly strong finance
school
we offer outstanding expertise in the
finance subject area we have
incredibly strong and knowledgeable
faculty who have a huge depth of finance
expertise
and we also as we know have multiple
programs offered across the finance
subject area so not only do we have the
masters in financial analysis as you
mentioned which is our pre-experience
finance specialist masters but also
obviously our myth which is our post
experience we also offer a phd in
finance and across the school we have a
very integrated uh finance ecosystem so
that consists not just of our degree
programs as i've mentioned but also of
our executive education programs and
courses uh where we have a strong
finance specialism
we also have multiple
institutes within the school so our aqr
asset management institute and various
institutes including our private capital
institute
all of which bring this kind of very
strong and well-developed finance
ecosystem together
so in terms of my role as program
director overseeing both of these pre
and post-finance specialist masters
programs
that gives me
a strong level of oversight and ability
to connect all these various elements of
the finance ecosystem more holistically
for our students
and there's certainly elements of
commonality across these finance
programs but also very importantly
elements of difference that we leverage
off as well
and it's in being able to have oversight
on both those elements of commonality so
some of our subject our finance faculty
some of our electives which we offer
across both programs our amazing
mentoring program which we'll talk about
later which involves both the myths and
the mfas but also those elements of
difference so that i'm able to very
clearly um be able to differentiate
these offerings because they are quite
different
so we do um
whilst we separate out our programs um
at experience levels so our early
careers and our mid-career programs
so that the students are amongst their
most useful peer group of course and
within the different levels of
experience
it's great to have them
combined within the institution um with
essentially mine and many of my
colleagues oversight so that we can have
a
focus on finance throughout these
various programs and it's not just as we
know in our finance specialist masters
where we have that focused on our
specialist finance phd it's also even
within the mba we have some finance
elements within our masters in analytics
and management which is another one of
our early careers programs we're really
able
and to create benefit for our students
by having that that finance subject area
expertise woven throughout
various elements of the school both
degree programs and executive education
and
i think that's really covering what i
wanted to in that that piece
thanks deborah and thank you for running
through outside of our degree program
some of the other elements where finance
comes through the school as well i think
that's really important and i mentioned
just before that we offer the masters in
finance in both
full-time and part-time and in fact it's
the only of our degree programs where we
offer it in two structures
um but they are different they're
different classes and there are
differences in the candidates that apply
to each program as well so if we just
dive a little bit deeper into what
exactly the part-time and the full-time
classes um look like in terms of the
program itself
and we might have some people joining us
who were still unsure which one is for
them and so deborah maybe you can make a
start by just talking us through
what the similarities and differences
are in the programmes themselves
absolutely so
my colleague maria angeli who's the
senior program manager for the myth
program both full-time and part-time
who very closely will support
our students and does support them on
their journey she will cover the deeper
dive into the specifics of each program
um but at a high level the key
differences between the part-time and
the full-time program
well first of all the similarity is in
terms of content they are exactly the
same so there's no difference in the
content of the two degrees
the only difference is in the structure
and in the duration of the part-time and
the full-time programs so the full-time
program is offered um at a duration of
between 10 and 16 months so the 16-month
pro so the 10-month program is three
terms and
students would graduate at the end of
those three terms so essentially a
traditional standard one year program
full-time students have the opportunity
to extend their program and take on the
16-month
program which is the what we call the
optional fourth term
this is a very popular option for our
fourth term sorry for our full-time
students um it includes no additional
fees and it gives you more time as a
student to attend various electives that
you might have chosen in your portfolio
and to go on a full-term
exchange program those exchange programs
are absolutely still open to our
part-time students just at different
points in their degree
program which maria will cover off later
so that's a key difference in the
full-time structure and obviously in the
duration of the program also
being full-time students typically
attend class monday to friday
and particularly during the first term
when they have their core courses that
will be you know nearly every day of the
week
so
in terms of working
our students would would not be working
they would be studying full-time
for our part-time students the duration
of the part-time program it runs over
two years and it's 22 months it's rarely
designed for those finance professionals
who are looking to accelerate their
career in finance but remain working at
the same time so it's designed to allow
our students to work simultaneously
whilst they study
i would say that those are the main
differences there are a couple of other
and slightly less obvious differences
one of which i'll cover in a minute and
that includes some of the career
offerings and career support that we
provide to our full-time and part-time
students um and that's just reflective
of the different aspirations and
requirements of those two different sets
of students and i'll talk a little bit
about that in a minute charlotte
great thank you deborah absolutely we'll
get onto careers and and focus on that
in a bit more detail and you mentioned
fourth term there and we do have ezra
chalic joining us a little bit later um
who
graduated in 2020 and did up to take the
fourth term so i'm looking forward to
you all hearing more about what exactly
that looks like in context um shortly
um so david over to you um
the admissions director so um you really
are sort of selecting uh who is entering
each of these classes either part-time
or full-time so i'm really interested to
hear and to share with our audience what
the differences are in who we select for
each program and maybe there are
differences in their aspirations within
their applications as well
thanks charlotte yeah so with uh peter
johnson and his team and we we look at
admissions for both the separate groups
of applicants
and we hope with events like this we can
help to describe the differences between
the program so people choose the
direction because they are quite
different and the students are quite
different the main obvious one being if
you're a part-time student you are
learning while you're working so you're
working and coming back into the
classroom and then bringing all that
back in and applying it
straight away to the job you've got
quite often our part-time students are a
little bit more senior so a little bit
more experience um but there's a lot of
overlap on that front this is a post
experience program so we want
everybody to come in and on both
programs both with finance experience so
it's not like the part time is a way to
pick up finance completely afresh after
doing something else this is for people
who are in there doing it who want to
build these skills and i think that's
possibly what it is the part-timers are
looking to build their career over time
apply what they're learning to usually
you know excellent jobs um and the
full-timers are more often coming from
all around the world to make a
significant change in their role uh the
sector within finance or the
geographical location
so the part-time
operating the way it does means that we
will often have people locally and of
course it being london local means from
all around the world having to be
working in this brilliant city and so
with aspirations where
both groups are incredibly ambitious and
looking to build their careers and
change and develop and both could be
changing sectors um or even thinking
about
about the long term and entrepreneurship
but it's what they're immediately
looking to do and how much of their time
they spend in that career search that's
one of the differences that helps us to
look um but the basics for everybody uh
in terms of the attributes are good
academic track records
relevant experience that you can share
with others on both programme formats
and you can build on from all the
different courses our passion for
finance is the key for both
thanks david um and yeah absolutely just
to reiterate both our post experience
master's program so
we are looking at your experience within
your occupation and so hopefully that
helps anybody who was unsure which
program um they would be applying for
if you were still unsure we'll be joined
by another charlotte later on charlotte
tate
who is our student recruitment manager
for the masters in finance um and you
can that can connect with charlotte um
or any of the team on myth london.edu
share your profile and we'll be really
happy to work with you um on the
application
so whether part-time or full-time the
masters in finance community is very
special at lbs and a little bit later
we're going to come on to community
specifically and and share a bit more
about that and what it looks like and
but deborah back to you for a little
while we have been back to classroom
first teaching this year which is very
exciting we were really happy back in
august to be able to have everybody back
on campus um and in the next session
attendees will learn about both myth
programmes and hear all about our
alumni's experiences
and but what is it that for you deborah
that really makes myth at lbs stand out
and why is it so unique as a program
charlotte so
there are many there are many factors
here to discuss and i i'm going to
focus on a couple of those and
the key things i think well one of them
that you've already just mentioned is it
is a post experience program so we know
that this program is aimed at finance
professionals who typically have a
minimum of three years of post-grad
finance related uh work experience and
this is important and makes the program
stand up because
in terms of your peer group within the
classroom you have a really rich and
diverse peer group
so you'll be learning not just from
faculty who we'll speak a little bit
about that in a minute as well but also
from your peers and this really does
make the myth a rich learning experience
it's not just about the incredible
faculty who stand in front of you but
it's about your peers who are around you
on the journey with you
one of the things we're really proud of
really proud about with both the
full-time and the part-time program is
our strong focus on experiential
learning at the school
um of course our curriculum is really
strongly grounded in theoretical and
academic courses but we also offer a lot
of practical application through things
like our practitioner courses through
learning from peers
and learning from practitioners who have
industry experience there's a very
strong focus on practical application
throughout the myth programs
and we really want to be delivering a
program and we believe we are delivering
a program and we hear from um
the
businesses that and students and alumni
that we have and we continue to deliver
a program that connects very strongly to
the world of work
and the business realities around us
some examples of what we deliver on the
program and again maria will talk a
little bit more about these and in terms
of our experiential practical learning
focus are as i've just
alluded to we have practitioner sessions
so these are an important part of the
myth program
our practitioner series our series of
courses
absolutely unique to the myth program
that are delivered by finance
professionals who are working in
industry and the aim of those is to link
the academic learning to the challenges
of real life situations so these
practitioner sessions will equip our
students with
the real tools and insights that relate
to specific professional areas examples
of some of these areas that we cover
throughout the program are asset
management we cover risk corporate
finance regulations mergers and
acquisitions so that's just one example
of our focus on experiential and
practical application
the other is um our
our global opportunities as well which
students have
the
opportunity to apply for and to attend
throughout the degree again maria will
come cover some of these a little bit
more detail but this allows our full our
full term and our block work block week
exchanges to various different global
destinations as well as the more
informal tricks that take place across
the school will really allow our
students to experience learning
in reality have a huge amount of
cultural diversity and immersion
throughout those those experiential
opportunities and activities
another area where we focus on the
experiential learning aspect
throughout the degree is our
professional and technical skills
delivery again maria will cover exactly
what these are
in the next session but what's really
important to us is that
students have the opportunity to
practice and develop their soft skills
and their technical business school
skills that we know are
really important for the world of work
so
we have done a lot of work and we work
very closely with our career center
which i'll discuss in a minute
to understand what those skills are and
then to ensure that not just
theoretically our students are upskilled
in those areas but that
practically they're actually able to
implement these skills and develop
themselves as as you know the best
finance professionals that they can be
so experiential and practical is another
really important element that makes the
most special
the other one again charlotte you've
alluded to this and and we'll speak
about this specifically a little bit
later is the community the fact that you
know the myth community is a community
within a finance community within the
broader lbs community and it's a an
incredibly rich um and diverse community
not only our students but our faculty
come from across the world um and this
within itself and creates a you know
something really special about the myth
we have a really strong myth alumni
community and for anyone who joins the
program you will become one of our
really valuable myth alumni and and
benefit from that incredible network and
that diverse community
um something that we also pride
ourselves on is how we leverage our
london location within the degree so yes
we're based in london and it's a
wonderful location both in terms of it
having a you know rich cultural
diversity as a location but also
importantly for myth we know that london
is a very important financial hab
so this is part of the incredible
student experience that you will have as
a student is physically being in london
and we utilize that to our benefit in
terms of speakers and career
opportunities and employers and
that are based in london um and
experiential activities um
uh within within the the london
community
i think something that must be mentioned
here in terms of what makes the myth
special
is how flexible the program is
so sure there's a core and it's
important that we do have a core
part of the program which is uh
consistent and mandatory for all
students so that we do build that
academic and specialist expertise that
we require in the program
maria will go into detail around those
five core courses and the elements of
the program that are mandatory
but then we also have a high level of
flexibility for our students we make
sure that we constantly evolve our
curriculum
so that we are able to meet the needs
not just of our students but of the
wider business community um our degree
is incredibly relevant
and we're always
ensuring that what we deliver remains
relevant we'll talk a little bit more
about this in a minute when we talk
about some of our electives
so the program is really tailored in
that respect and some examples of how
you can tailor your experience and and
have some flexibility in what you
uh what you take during the the time
you're at lbs is through our
concentrations for example so you have
an elective portfolio
um
students need to take between eight to
11 electives during their time on the
program and that electoral portfolio you
have a huge amount of choice
we have i think more than 53 electives
that you're able to choose from
as a myth student but within those
elective choices we also have
concentrations now our concentrations
are entirely optional you don't have to
take a concentration but you can and you
can take as many as you wish our
concentrations are designed to help you
plan and tailor your learning to your
career goals and we have four
concentrations currently on the myth we
have a concentration uh in
investment management and analysis in
risk management and derivatives in
corporate finance and we have the cfo
concentration so if any of those peak
your interest we will be able to guide
and direct you in terms of which
electives and which practitioner
sessions you would need to select in
order to claim those concentrations
so that's just one example of how
flexible we are in the program
and i also mentioned uh
earlier that we
one of the differences between our
part-time and our full-time program is
in the career support that we do offer
to our part-time and full-time myths so
we recognize and we really do appreciate
that
uh students have different requirements
from a career support perspective
so
our um career offering we've recently
just launched a really exciting career
curriculum for our part-time students
our full-timers and already have an
incredible career offering and and we've
launched this new initiative with our
part-time
students which is our carousel our
career carousel i won't go into too much
detail but what i can say there is it's
um aligned with our executive mba
students and the offering that they have
it allows our part-time students to have
cross-program workshops and networking
skills with the executive mba students
and those students have a similar kind
of career journey and in terms of being
part-time students as well our embers as
well as our part-time myths so there's
definite synergy between our part-time
moves and our embers we recognize that
and we've well our career center has
created a specialized um curriculum for
our part-time students
so there's a large amount of flexibility
for students within this degree
we also um have
we really are very focused on not just
keeping up with the industry but in
leading um
changes and
uh
forward thinking within the industry and
within the broader sector
we are incredibly innovative at lbs um
i'll talk in a minute about our world
leading faculty and we really do
we really are responsive to macro and
industry changes in our curriculum and
in our delivery
so that really does set us apart as well
one thing that we often hear from our
students as well is that we're very
student-led in our approach to
delivering our our curriculum and
designing our curriculum
and and that's across the school it's
very particularly in myth as well
we really do believe and the students
corroborate that view that we listen and
we respond to our students feedback and
their needs and that's important because
we want to be responsive to what our
students want and need and and we
believe that that we indeed are
i think the last point there there's
there's other points i could raise here
but just as i said i'd name a few i
think one of the other things that makes
our move incredibly special is our
world-class faculty
so we have people in our faculty who are
just the best at what they do
and we have a huge depth of expertise
within our faculty and this is a big
differentiator for us as as a school
and our our faculty are really at the
coal face of industry and innovative
trends in finance but even more broadly
in economics um and and even more
broadly just in business
just to talk a little bit about our
faculty
you know what's really important is that
uh we have our our faculty is they're
not just engaged as i say in academic
research although our faculty are
world-renowned in terms of their
academic research there are also
consultants to corporations businesses
and members of editorial boards and
research journals so
they're they as i say are very much in
touch with um non-academic needs as well
in the classroom
they conduct original research um and
they um really have a strong record of
published research and leading journals
so our faculty definitely does uh set us
apart and and really does uh give us the
reputation well earned um as a leading
finance school
so yeah charlotte those are just a few
things that i wanted to highlight about
what makes almost special at lbs
thank you deborah i think that was
incredibly thorough and really covered
all of the things i can think of as well
which makes me specifically special and
i'm looking forward to diving into some
of those comments throughout this
conversation and some of those points
and
but sticking with faculty a little bit
you reminded me that i can also let our
audience know that we are going to be
having a finance faculty series um
throughout
um february march and april and so do
keep your eye out for that and register
i think that as deborah for all of the
reasons deborah mentioned we really do
have outstanding faculty at london
business school and it would be a shame
not to experience that before submitting
an application and really understanding
what your classroom environment might
look like and
but david um to add on to deborah's
comments on faculty you know we really
do have faculty with such depth and
expertise it's outstanding what can you
add you've been a lbs
you know one of the maybe longest
serving members of staff at lbs and so
you'll have seen a few faculty come
through but what could you add about
some of our um faculty members and who
sort of stood out to you um most
recently
i mean the faculty are the the driver of
the school
at the core of this call we've got a
brilliant professional staff that helped
to uh to run the programs and the school
in general but the faculty at the heart
with their research and their teaching
and so many i mean
for the myths alone this is why the myth
program was established and all those
years ago is because we had such we were
growing such a depth and breadth for
finance faculty and there was such a
calling within the mba program for the
specialism that we spotted an
opportunity to develop a a program that
can leverage that depth
and so there are still
a small number of the senior professors
around who've been there for most of
the the life cycle of that the masters
and finances people like julian franks
who's one of the speaker for this series
you talked about right through to the
newer members of faculty join us every
year you know faculty just like our
electives that we'll talk about later um
are constantly joining and as we've
grown that body over recent
years
so when it comes to things like the core
course there's a depth of teaching and
also on electives where you're picking
was eight to ten from 40 plus electives
for the for the massive and finance
students across the different subject
areas you're going to come across some
amazing people like joel coco um
corporate finance and real estate
finance expert and
through to um
solomon bassack financial engineering
risk management a real character um and
then alex edmonds who
has taken finance in a in a
a broader direction for us as well with
a managing and investing responsible
business elective and his book grow the
pie
and so that's touching on strategy and
going between different subject areas as
the fact to do bringing the best into
the program and that's something sorry
i'm jumping ahead of myself but the
difference is myth and mba that the
similarities are that there's this
breadth of study that our students can
choose from and and this fantastic
faculty body of well over 100 professors
who are the best in the world and what
they do
absolutely and charlotte maybe i could
just add some more specifics in terms of
some of our myth faculty that
i'm i i thought would be
perhaps useful for our participants to
hear about so some of the areas of
research that our finance faculty are
engaged and many of these faculty are
indeed teaching on our core courses on
the myth
or they're delivering electives which
are available to our students and often
very popular electives and those key
areas of research that we have a depth
of expertise and includes asset pricing
corporate finance empirical finance
continuous time finance macroeconomics
microeconomics econometrics um and those
are just some of the broader topics so
just to perhaps pinpoint two faculty um
alex edmonds who david has mentioned so
alex does teach on one of the popular
electives that is open to the myth which
is our managing and investing and
responsible business
um
some students sorry some attendees may
be familiar with alex he does have a
world-leading reputation you know alex
has his phd in finance from mit sloan he
was a fulbright scholar um and he was he
taught at wharton where he was um
tenured in 2013 before coming to lbs and
he's been with us for a number of years
um alex's research interests span the
breadth of corporate finance
particularly responsible business and
behavioral finance and he's the managing
editor of
the review of finance which is as we
many people may or may not know is the
leading academic finance journal in
europe um his research has been covered
by the wall street journal financial
times the economist
and he's received multiple
teaching and
research awards he regularly receives
excellence in teaching awards at lbs and
also previously during his time in
wharton
and his various research awards
include uh he has a whole uh
a whole raft of those and some of the
more interesting ones i think he won
uh what he did when
a rising star of corporate governance
and rising star finance for outstanding
contributions by a person under 40 as
well as
time magazine's 50 best inventions of
2010 for his responsible homeowners
reward and center-based solution so um
that's just one example of a faculty
member he also has he also has a book if
anyone's read it which he's recently
published which we do obviously refer to
at the school it
is called grow the pie how great
companies deliver both purpose and
profit and uh it was uh last year's
financial times uh one of their business
books of the year
so we're incredibly proud and to have
alex on our finance teaching faculty um
just to dive into one of our core
faculty for myth so um again incredibly
proud of this faculty member james starr
he will teach our students and does
teach our students on one of their
compulsory core courses which is
corporate finance and valuation he also
teaches our phd students on financial
economics and james holds a phd from
princeton
and his main research interests are um
in the very specific area of the effect
of limited arbitrage capital on stock
price dynamics he also looks at
financial
fire sales and bubbles
and he also looks quite specifically at
the topic of executive compensation and
the role of finance and financial
markets on corporate resource allocation
decisions
he's also served as the editor of the
review of economic studies
um and he's held positions um at various
top academic institutions like upenn
and he's also highly published in
various journals um and brings a high
level
of as i mentioned earlier practical
experience and exposure and current um
knowledge
through his consulting experience so
he's consulted in the areas and provided
advice in the areas of valuation the
cost of capital corporate governance and
expert testimony so i thought to just
provide a little bit more color and and
deeper dive into just two of our our
incredible faculty that our most
students
uh would be exposed to whilst on them
with journey with us
thank you deborah and i think you know
from what you have said i think people
will likely be quite well by the faculty
that we have um at london business
school and so a question that i often
have from prospective students is what
is that relationship like you know we
have these world-class faculty members
standing right in front of you teaching
you what how interactive is it and what
exactly does it look like in the
classroom
so you're just on it
i apologize i said thanks and it's a
really important point because um
it is incredibly interactive in the
classroom so our faculty and we pride
ourselves on our teaching methodology
our faculty are very engaged with our
students in the classroom and students
will experience a highly interactive
discussion-based classroom environment
where faculty are incredibly open to
questioning they encourage questioning
and they encourage debate within the
classroom they're also very open to
students getting to know them
and you know students will have those
opportunities certainly within the
classroom but even outside of the
classroom to get to know their faculty
for example on the myth we have these
events which we call up close with
faculty and they're certainly not
mandatory but they're offered as an
opportunity to our myth students to have
special sessions with some of our
faculty uh recently we ran one with
julian franks who david simpson just
mentioned previously um and and yes we
give formal opportunities for our
students to engage with faculty outside
of the classroom but they will have
those opportunities organically and
naturally through their interaction with
the faculty in various platforms not
just in the classroom
great thanks deborah i think you know
that's a really important point is
how they do have the opportunity to
build that professional relationship um
outside and inside of the classroom
um i wanted to touch upon one of the
points that you mentioned just before
deborah um
we we don't talk about it very much at
lbs i think maybe unless you come to an
event such as this but it's how
student-led london business school is
i think that lbs is as you said earlier
a place of innovation we have such an
excellent caliber of students which is
exactly why we encourage that debate in
the classroom because why be there if
you're not going to learn from one
another um
and i think the school really takes
pride in allowing those students and
that caliber and to you know lead on
various objectives um throughout the
school
so with innovation in mind and deborah
back to you if that's okay is there
anything new and exciting about the myth
programme that you can share that might
impact the prospective students joining
us today if they were to go on and apply
for the myth program
yes so definitely charlotte so we um not
just as a school but as a program and we
continue to innovate um
we innovate
obviously within the
the syllabus of each core course so the
content with each course within each
course continues to be innovative and
and relevant for our students but also
within the broader program design
structure we continue to innovate and i
thought to give a really good example of
this
is
our elective portfolio so i did mention
i did allude to that earlier
and in our electorate portfolio students
have a very wide range of electives that
they can choose from and they have more
than 50 electives which are open to them
uh one of the great benefits about elect
doing electives at lbs is that they are
open to all programs so our students
will find themselves with the
exception of one elective which is
specific to myth and that's strategy for
memphs but all our other electives are
open to all our programs so students
will find themselves in the classroom
with leadership students with executive
mba students with sloan leadership
students with mba students and even with
some early career students um really
importantly our elective portfolio is
designed in such a way so that we are
relevant to the program and we also
remain um really relevant to business
so we do believe that we are at the
forefront of what's new and exciting
trends in the industry in the delivery
of our elective portfolio every year we
add additional electives to the
portfolio and we do that across the
school and then within each program we
select electives that are relevant to
our particular programs as an example
last year so this year's current
students had a number of new electives
added to their portfolio
and some of those electives that uh were
added uh included
the
sorry some of them the electives that
were added um
included uh the business on of longevity
which was an interesting ob
um elective uh we had a finance elective
alternative credit investing we had
innovation and technology strategy so
that's just just to give you a flavor of
just one year where we added a number of
new electives and those electives will
um
will continue
so
what we look at when we're looking at
the elective portfolio is and speaking
to your point around being student-led
is we definitely listen to student
feedback in terms of what needs to be in
that portfolio we look at previous
demand from student we look at feedback
from our students in terms of shaping
our portfolios year to year and the
portfolio definitely has evolved for the
myth over the years and
since the inception of the program many
years ago
our lecturers are also really they need
to be dynamic and responsive not just to
changes in the student demand
demands and requirements but also
responsive to
um relevance for
the future career paths and current
careers of our students so we need to be
on the the forefront and at the cutting
edge of business and what are those key
topics that are not just interesting but
important for our students to be able to
be involved in whilst they're at
lbs
so just to give an example um at the
moment we're looking at next year's
elective portfolio
and we're currently looking at um
through a very consultative process
we look at um what are the new electives
that we might be considering as a school
for our future portfolio
and just to give you a sense um you know
of course we've added topics in the past
through this process that are financed
specific like fintech of course when
that trend first kind of emerged we were
at the forefront and adding um a fintech
elective
this year whilst we do have esg
electives already in our portfolio so
david mentioned alex edmonds with his
expertise in responsible and sustainable
business he does deliver already an
elective which is in our portfolio
called managing and investing in
responsible business so that's one that
is popular with our mips but what we're
looking at um
that we know that this area of esg
sustainability social impact
particularly within um within finance is
a really important one and one that
we're hearing more and more that our
students um find important and that
employers
put a lot of value on so we are looking
at a new finance elective covering
finance and sustainability so this
elective will highlight the real role of
finance in impacting and addressing
sustainability challenges
another new elective that we're looking
at is um
a data is in the area of data analytics
and programming so most students will
and you'll hear from maria in a minute
you will have a data analytics and
finance
pre-program element that you will
complete so for those of you who perhaps
don't have that background you will be
able to up skill in that background as
part of your program it is an important
skill set that our students do have and
then those students who want to focus
more on that can choose electives in
this area we obviously already have some
in that space in our portfolio but we're
really excited to be able to offer some
additional electives in this area so
we're looking at a new elective for next
year data science for business
which looks at advanced topics in data
science gives students greater exposure
to the software and tools used in
industry to implement these more
advanced techniques
so that's just a couple of examples to
really demonstrate i think a that we're
student-led so in our
some of us the
deliverables within our curriculum and
in our portfolio we listen to students
and we do take and their feedback really
seriously and we engage with them we
consult with them um in terms of our
design and delivery of our program as
well both current students and alumni i
should say alums are really important in
that respect but also just demonstrating
how as a school we do remain really on
top of what's new and exciting and we
follow a very research based approach to
putting together courses and content
that can deliver on those needs and for
our students and for the business
community
thank you deborah and thank you so much
for sharing um those very new um
potential electives that that may be
joining the portfolio this year and i'll
take the risk and say it might be
exclusive to this event that you hear
about this so um
thank you so much for sharing it's
always nice to know what there is to
look forward to
um i would like us to move on then and
just take five minutes and talking about
careers at london business school and
again maybe another one of the hidden
gems um at lbs um is our commitment to
careers and our amazing career center
and so our part-time students don't
necessarily come to lbs as david
mentioned earlier looking for their next
job they're more looking for sort of
that longer-term transition but they can
still access all of these resources and
deborah you mentioned the new carousel
that's just been launched for them
specifically
and so debra maybe coming back to you
again sorry it's a lot of um time on you
during this conversation but love to
make the most of you while we have you
um can you talk us through some of the
opportunities and perhaps examples of
career switches or career acceleration
that you've seen
um either in progress right now or on
previous years and that you're aware of
within our alumni body of course we're
going to have a couple of cases um in
our next session with the alumni that
are going to be joining us and but
anything that really sort of stands out
to you as a as a prime example of some
of those transitions
sure so so we have
numerous examples of both and those who
accelerated their career
in the same industry and also students
who um
graduated and and were
career switches
and just to give you a couple of
examples of of some of those which i
have here in front of me and some of the
ones that that come to mind and stand
out are
some students who pre-lbs were um
involved in in banking jobs as perhaps
an assistant fund manager post lbs so
these are career accelerator examples
staying within the same organization but
moving really rapidly to a fund manager
role others are within um
some some consulting industry
moving from management consulting to a
senior role within that consulting
industry career switches and we have as
i say multiple examples some examples
are where students have changed both
industry and location and so we have a
great example here of a student who was
um
with
jp morgan
in
ib and switched both industry in india
and switched both industry and location
from ibm india to im in the uk and
joined legal in general um which is
in the investment management industry in
in london uh we just we have just a slew
of examples and i wanted to perhaps
pinpoint one example and one particular
case just to share with you just to
really you know
make a
uh make this a real life example so
um one of our full-time 21 students who
uh recently graduated as a career she is
a great example of a career switcher and
so
as i've mentioned we're still really
close to our alumni so we do know the
journeys that they've taken and this is
just a really interesting switch so um
mosendo who was a full-time 21
she pre-lbs she was engaged as a ratings
advisory analyst in the corporate and
investment banking sector with a very
large corporate investment bank in
johannesburg
she
attended the summer
associate 2021 internship program at
actus which is a private equity firm
and she was recently able to convert
that into a full-time position still
based in south africa so she made a
significant switch in terms of what she
was doing
and and she has a really wonderful
success story which
has been highlighted
uh in in various places it's quite a
public success story um and she she knew
that through her masters in finance
program that um she wanted to um to kind
of have this the switch and it was the
the program and the what she learned on
that program that she was able to make
that successful switch in her in her
career she actually attended the actor's
presentation at lbs um as one of our
career events and that was the
opportunity that she had to learn more
about actors and the energy and
infrastructure team and she she rarely
knew that um
that she wanted to move into a role
where she could have more impact and and
and that was really
her vision and she was able to make that
successful switch
and so i really just wanted to highlight
one individual but
we have a slew of examples around
students who switch careers
and success stories of our of our
fantastic alumni
thanks debra and um you know i think
that's a fantastic example like you say
is just one we're going to hear a couple
more
in the next session
um
david i wonder if i could come to you to
ask um similar question but with a
different
view around if there are any examples of
careers that we can't help with or that
the masters in finance um program maybe
is not used should not be used for
yeah it's quite difficult question to
answer this one simply because whenever
i give examples of things there's always
somebody's gone and done it via the myth
so i mean i really
so much of
what happens to people after any of our
programs is dependent on the individual
what they put in what they bring with
them what they hope to go on to uh
endeavour spoke about a consultant who
progressed and that's that's one thing i
think if you're if you're looking at
you're coming from and well presumably
finance for the massive finance and
looking for a switch into strategy
consulting so mckinsey and vcg that's
what principally our mba is designed for
so that the myth is not going to work
with those companies in terms of hiring
big numbers of them in the way that
the mba does so that's one example
that's kind of disproved by the career
advancer who's already in consulting
which is a slightly different angle on
it but on the whole if it's got finance
in front of it then it's you know it can
be possible
we are you know we're we're not
magicians so much is about what you
create but we're giving all these
opportunities the skills the education
the toolkits the networks
and helping to build your confidence and
how you apply
what you know
in the context of whichever company and
job
um so and that there are huge huge
differences depending on what job you're
going for and how you will do that is i
have a technical a highly um
quantitative job
or is it something that requires you
know a lot more networking skills so on
the whole you know most things within
this finance sphere are possible through
the for the masters in finance program
if you bring the
right kind of experiences recruiters are
looking for or you can achieve it
through the the fourth term and the
internship or the networking or the the
careers events at the school
and but there are certain areas where we
say you know what you should be looking
at the nba you know we're we're very
straightforward like that
in the same way when i'm looking at mba
applications i think why is this person
not looking at muslim finance that
program is designed to get people you
know straight to where you want to get
to and in less time with more focus so
we do have those conversations with
people about which might be the most
successful route for them both ways
brilliant thank you david and um we we
use that royal we of where we can help
and where we can support um and i just
wanted to come back to that and exactly
what that support does look like and
actually deborah a lot of that is in
collaboration with your team so what we
call the program office and the career
center and we don't have somebody from
the career center here to sort of speak
through everything that they do but we
can absolutely provide more information
on that in future sessions and our
alumni will tell you all about the
support that they
um
they they took from the career center as
well
but deborah could you maybe just provide
and we don't have an awful lot of time
but maybe just an example of how you do
work in collaboration with the career
center to support students with their
transitional acceleration
yeah absolutely i think i'll just
pinpoint one area and we do collaborate
really closely with them as as we need
to and one of the areas where we
collaborate really closely is in our
professional skills offering so maria
will cover a little bit more of this in
detail um probably in the next session
but we have to have a rarely joined up
approach with our career center in terms
of developing the soft skills the
leadership skills the business and
professional skills alongside those
technical skills of our miss students
and so both in terms of the design of a
really comprehensive skills portfolio
but also in how we deliver that to our
students we work really closely with our
career centre our career leads and
within the career center are credibly
close to the business community and so
they intimately know the types of skills
that we need our students to develop to
become even more successful in their
chosen careers so
i would say that is the area that that
you know we can use as a really good
example of us working closely with them
perfect thank you so much um deborah i
just wanted to make sure that we touched
upon that and exactly what that support
looked like and that it is there and you
mentioned it before around um your team
who can support with you know which
electives should people be selecting if
they want a specific concentration so
for anything i think that you've heard
today and you're thinking you know if
it's so flexible how do i actually
navigate that on the program there is a
team for it most likely um and to
support you with that although to
david's point you know you are really
advocating for yourself through this as
well with the right hard work you can
really achieve almost anything
um
okay we we don't have an awful lot of
time left and i mentioned earlier that i
would like to take some time to talk
about the masters in finance community
and
the community overall at london business
school is very special it's diverse it's
inclusive it's incredibly active
um
and as as we mentioned earlier the myth
community is a community within that
um so
deborah how would you describe the um
finance community at london business
school and then i'll come to you david
i'll show you on me
sorry about that yes sir our finance
community community
very engaged um our finance community is
very linked up
and very well connected and that talks
to that finance ecosystem that i spoke
about earlier whether it's across degree
programs within our institutes or within
our executive education offering and
through our faculty our finance subject
area as well
so the community is is incredibly
important and something that
really
will provide the students with a
holistic student experience whilst on
the move
i think
one of the things that we know makes lbs
stand out is the diverse peer group and
how global our community is and that
is is the same for the myth community
and the finance community as well um no
different there in terms of our
opportunities um within the this strong
finance community and
it's beyond just the finance programs
where the students can can build this
uh engagement with our finance community
of course they can build that with their
peers and in class but we also have
numerous clubs where our students can be
involved these
range from
many
general clubs but also a number of
finance specific clubs so we have the
finance club we have a private equity
club um we have a real estate club so
there are really niche clubs where
students can build their connections and
their expertise across our lbs finance
community
we also as i mentioned have the finance
institutes and there could be
opportunities for students to get
involved there our aqr asset management
institute our private funding and
private capital institute and of course
we have our incredible myth alumni
community
and so there's so many opportunities for
students to be involved
and enhance their special specialist
knowledge outside of the classroom in
all these different places and
communities throughout the school it's
not just about enhancing
their knowledge of finance it's of
course about enhancing these
valuable networks um that they can be
involved in throughout the school one
thing to mention is our as an example is
our mentoring program so we have um it's
ostensibly an early careers mentoring
program where
myth students are engaged in mentoring
our early careers students but that
includes our masters in financial
analysis students and our masters and
management and masters in analytics and
management students
and this is really an exciting
opportunity for the myth students to
create networks with those early career
students as well to give back a little
bit well a lot actually to give back and
skills share share their expertise and
their experience and help those early
careers to build um their knowledge and
their um professional skills and so
you know we there's benefits both the
mentors and the mentees on that
mentoring program
the the the students will
be able to
build their
relationships with the early careers
students and for those with students who
aren't already managers many will become
managers and it really does develop
their skills around managing others and
getting an understanding of the types of
challenges and opportunities that they
might experience in managing teams and
managing perhaps a different generation
so yes very strong finance community i
appreciate we're running out of time so
i'll leave it at that
thank you deborah and i think you know
to to echo what you said curiosity and
collaboration are really key in making
the most of that network that you can
build at london business school and so
opportunities such as that mentorship
program allow you to really explore and
be curious in others and learn from
those experiences
and so david in applications we're
looking for special people who are going
to have an impact on our school and on
the world of finance and the way that
the world does business and as is our
mantra at london business school so how
might our prospective students or admits
be involved in that community and
actually how can people get involved now
thanks so um
the most important thing is to really
understand who we are what we do and
that the program and the student group
specifically so the differences between
and and just to think that this is not a
transaction
you know you are you're not just here to
try and get your first job after
business school you're building your
lifelong learning and networks you're
getting involved you're
going to be
collaborating and
complementing the community
so the best thing to do right now is to
get to know as many students as you can
chat to them because they're going to be
very different perspectives that people
are coming from
and the way they're doing things while
they're here as well the difference
between full-time and part-time and how
much time commitment people can give but
then also the energy and one of the
things i love about myth is
is the strength of the the community
within the community you know the myth
community inside the london business
school community that pride in the
masters in finance now i really
shouldn't say this but i always think of
myths as the super smart sibling in the
lbs family in terms of the skills we
expect people to have coming in and what
they do and but they still need to have
that well-rounded
view of the world so talk to as many
people to get those different viewpoints
this has been a great introduction for
you or perhaps it's the second or third
event you've done but um keep talking
keep reading
and keep checking that this is right for
you and then put your best foot forward
to join us because we'd uh you know
we're really excited about the classes
that we're building this year to join in
august
we are indeed thank you so much and so
thank you deborah thank you david for
joining us for this conversation i think
that's a fantastic start to our day
hopefully a great overview of all things
matters in finance and all things lbs
actually um
so we're going to take a very short
break now and we'll be back in just a
couple of minutes for our next session
your myth journey where we're going to
hear from a couple of our alumni from
the masters in finance programme and
hear how they shaped and tailored their
journey and what they're doing now post
obvious and so thank you and we will see
you very soon

### Exploring the Masters in Finance - Your MiF Journey
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IXuGu7C-QY

Idioma: en

hello and welcome back i hope that was
um a long enough short break for
all of you and i will invite our alumni
to um add their cameras now as well
um and so that you can see everybody
joining us for our next session which is
your myth
journey
um so
i am delighted to have more wonderful
guests for this session who can offer
insights into what you can expect for
your myth journey to look like from
start all the way through to finish
we have alumni joining us and i hope
that
you will hear how at the end of the
programme at london business school it's
actually not the end for your learning
and it's not the end for your time with
lbs as we ensure lifelong connections
with our alumni body at yes
so for this session i am shortly going
to hand over to maria angeli a senior
program manager for the masters in
finance who is going to talk you through
the full programme and all of your
options throughout from start to finish
so although we touched upon them in the
previous session you're really going to
see um that through uh
through a sort of full scale of um from
start to finish in this session
um and then we're going to hear from
andrew y in andrew yeo myth part-time
2021 graduate and who had professional
experience with deutsche bank and credit
suisse prior to and during his studies
with lbs and then ezra chalic as well
our masters in finance full-time
graduate from 2020 um who was also
working with deutsche bank prior to
london business school and is now with
citibank
so our alumni will share their
individual journeys and everybody's
journey looks completely different at
london business school so i'm excited
for you to see two examples of that and
we've used the j word journey instead of
program for this session because life at
london business school is so much more
than just the program so this is a great
opportunity for anybody considering
applying to an lbs degree to see how the
academics the global experiences the
exchange programs the practical
experiences all of the career and
recruitment support the clubs and
anything else extracurricular all come
together to form each person's journey
at lbs
so for this session we will have plenty
of time for your questions so whether
you have a question from the last
session and that you'd like to ask david
or deborah i think they're sticking
around so they'll be able to keep an eye
on that box and respond to any
um as well
um and
you may have new questions from this
session so do feel free to start to send
them through at any time and once we've
finished
presentations i will make sure we get to
them
um so without further ado i will hand
over to maria maria thank you so much
for joining us today
thank you thank you very much harlow and
thanks everyone for joining this session
um before i hand over to andrew and esra
i'll um
i'll just give you a bit of an overview
of the of the myth journey
but before that just a little bit about
my role within the the masters in
finance team so as um charlotte said i
am the senior program manager within the
masters and finance program
um and in my role i'm responsible for on
overseeing the planning and the
delivering
of program and journey
um i have been part of the of the miff
team for the past four years so i have
quite a lot of exposure
and experience with the actual journey
um now as you know the myth is a post
experience program and
is aimed for finance professionals with
a minimum of three years postgraduate
[Music]
relevant experience
finance of course
um we find that this creates a rich and
diverse class where you learn not just
from faculty but also from from your
peers
now the methods is delivered in the full
time and the part-time format and
although the structure
and the time that it takes to complete
the degree is different
the actual content is the same
and we're going to talk about that in a
bit more detail in a couple of more
slides
now the um if you join to to apply for
the full-time program um you will be
able to complete the degree in 10 to 16
months which is three to four times
um and it requires you to be on campus
most days of the week
now if you
opt to stay for the fourth term which is
optional but it's a very popular option
as it does not require you to pay any
additional fees
it gives you
more time than in full fam
you'll have more time to do more
electives with lbs or you could also
apply for a full term exchange in one of
our partner schools
um if you choose to apply for the
part-time program you need to know that
this is a 22-month program it's a
two-year program and it's designed for
finance professionals who want to
accelerate their career in finance but
they want to remain working during their
studies
therefore the part-time students in
their first year they have classes every
friday evening and saturday the whole
day every other week and then their
second year they can tailor their
schedule based on the electives that
they select
um
now before i talk you through the the
journey itself um i just wanted to
introduce you this this year's class um
the mifo time 22 class we have in the
midfield time 22 class we have 132
students
and as you can see this is a very
diverse class
94 of our students are international
and they represent 45 nationalities
in this year's class
we have six years
of relevant finance work experience and
the age is the average age is 30 years
old
um the
the part-time 2023 class
is a bit smaller
however is equally diverse we have 80 of
our students
being international and they represent
29 nationalities
now as you can see the part-time
students are slightly more experienced
than our full-time class
the average work experience is 7 years
and the average age is
32 years old
now um this slide is a snapshot of the
of the myth journey so this is what you
need to do to complete the degree
um you will begin by doing several prep
courses online before the act the
program starts um and this would be in
accounting and and statistics
um now in the first week of the program
which is the orientation week um you'll
have the opportunity to meet um the
fellow full-time and part-time students
um there will be lots of fun activities
and events um and then you'll get the
chance to ask the program office team
and as well as the career center and and
of course the faculty
um after orientation week is done you
will continue with your core courses we
have five core courses these are
in personal assessment development
financial accounting and analysis
investments
corporate finance and valuation and
purpose of finance
now these are topics that we think
everyone needs to know um and
that's why we ensure that the whole
class has a good foundation um in
finance before they continue further
with the program
now full-time shooters um will complete
their core courses
in term one
and then they will be able to move on
with elective courses um at the end of
term one and then in terms two three and
of course if they stay for term four
and part-time students will complete
the core courses in their first year
um they can start doing some elective
courses in the first year so after three
electives they can complete in year one
and then they can complete the rest um
in in their second year
through our elective courses you're also
able to pursue one of our four
concentrations so you can see the topics
in the slide
in concentrations are designed to help
you plan and tailor your learning around
your career goals
they're optional but they're very
popular and you can you can choose to
pursue more than one
um during the journey journey you will
also need to complete two professional
and one technical skills workshops
you can attend our new practitioner
courses and you'll have the opportunity
to apply for a full term or block week
exchange
and i'm going to give you a bit more
information about these elements of the
program in the next couple of slides
it's like literally a true highlight of
the program our practitioner courses
they are designed just for me students
and these courses
they link academic learning to the
challenges of real life situations
and they're delivered by finance
professionals um and actually some of
them are with alumni
and these courses will equip you with
relevant tools that you need
and deeper insights that relate to
specific professional areas
um the the courses they take place
throughout the academic year and um
although they're optional um they're
they're very popular
and of course you can take as many um as
many as you like
um a key component of the degree
are also the professional ed and
technical skills courses um it on this
slide you can see a few workshops that
we have offered in the past
um the professional workshops are
designed to
support your personal and professional
development um by working on the soft
skills that will help you perform
in business at a high level
whereas the technical skills are
designed to support your professional
development by giving you an
understanding of the hard skills that
you need in finance nowadays
now these workshops are not um they
don't seek to make you a programmer or
an expert in modeling but they will give
you
um the opportunity to practice and
develop these skills
um as i mentioned earlier our students
also have the opportunity to increase
their exposure to different cultures
through our global experiences
um
you can um
these these experiences is our full-time
exchange program in one of our partner
schools
um or the block week exchange at
columbia business school
now full-time students they can apply
for a full-term exchange if they stay
for the fourth term and we have a
variety of exchange partner schools um
that they can choose from and they can
apply
um and they can also apply for a block
week exchange at columbia business
school in new york um for full-time
students this is in term two three and
four for columbia business school and
for part-time students all exchange
opportunities are available in in the
second year
um apart from the exchange opportunities
we also have the global immersion
elective
which is um a course specifically
designed for my students
um of course travelling has been hugely
impacted by govit the last couple of
years um but this year we hope to travel
to frankfort and paris will be global
immersion elective and the focus of this
of this course is going to be on
regulating financial markets and
institutions
um that is a very brief summary of of
the myth
the myth journey
from the
program office perspective
and i think now
andrew will
take over
thank you
thank you maria an excellent overview of
all of the opportunities available um
and now i'm really excited to be able um
to show you some examples of what they
look like in color and in real life and
through a couple of case studies by our
alumni and so over to you first andrew
thank you very much charlotte um
good afternoon everybody from
all over the world i'm andrew i
graduated from zuma's part-time program
just six months ago
so i actually prepared a poll for you
guys just so that you can have an idea
about what your ambition um is going
through the myth program certificates
you could launch the flow
while i continue with my introduction
so i'm from singapore originally
and i moved to london through credit
suisse
and then after that i changed my
employment
to virtual bank right before the may
program and now
i work for corn hedge fund right now
called g research so that is the long
story short
what happens in between
virtual bank and g research will be
covered in the next slide
so as a part-time student um you'll be
going through the program um in two
years and in each year it is split up by
three terms for spring summer as you can
see there's a few with
activities and i struggle to switch
everything into one slide
but if you were to start from the very
beginning when you first joined the
program there's a lot of activities that
you can
take part in one of the biggest
experience that i had was the
orientation where you spent five days
in the campus and that's when your
network instantly grew by
a lot because the students that you meet
are going to be professionals who are
really based in london and what blew me
away was the weekend away as well where
we spent the full day in the outskirts
of england
where we do a lot of team building
exercises and there's trainers who will
be there to
lead us through those challenges
will be packed in our teams um so you'll
be allocated to a study group of like
around five to six people
and the program office will make sure
that's the people in your study group is
very diverse
so if i was to look back i could record
it
in that small team of five
i've got
a colleague called sandra she's got a
phd in astrophysics previously worked
for a hedge fund as a programmer
i have a director that works for a
venture
capital firm and an american who is a
fixed income trader
and another
friend from
france he run his own fund so red team
is very strong but when we first
catch up with each other we don't know
each other well and true that we came
away he bonded us very closely and from
then we know our
strengths and weaknesses and we also
plan how we can do well together as a
study group for the next um two years
going on
in the second and third month that's
when things get very exciting as well
where you'll be applying for
the clubs that you're interested to join
so i'm a big fan of squash i i
run for the exco position in the squash
cup as the treasurer and subsequently in
the next year i continue to run as an
exco as a co-president of sports club
and i think that it is
a very great experience to have because
when you're going through
the myth journey you'll be spending a
lot of time at work because your
part-time student you have to maintain
your full-time job and during your spare
time you have to go through
um
the courses that you have live as well
so i thought it was incredibly important
that i do something different keep
myself active and doing some sports
fast forward to the end of the first
four term
there's a group of 10 of us in the myth
program part-time program
we
took a plane
flew over to spain in my dream and we
just um
have a very fun time together to let's
celebrate the end of the first term
in the second term of my first year in
spring that is when as a part-time
student you will get to do your
elective
um i try to make sure that i apply for
electives that are offered
in dubai as you may already know lbs has
a campus in the uae as well and they
have a emba program over there and when
you do these courses in dubai you get to
work with these very intelligent senior
people from the emperor program that was
one of my
main objective as well is to meet as
much people as i can even though if you
don't
do these electives that are offered in
dubai
the students there will also be doing
electives that are offered in london
you'll also be exposed to a lot of
networking opportunities with people
from the mba program as well as the
early careers program as well so through
this mix of
student group
you'll be able to grow a lot as an
individual because you have to work with
people who are very senior who has
15 20 years of experience as well as
the
early careers students who have
at most two years experience so i think
that it is a very good mix which helped
me grow in terms of understanding
finance but also like managing people
and working well as a team
um
and as you already know in march 2020
coveted
i was really very impressed with how
quickly the school transformed as well
so in the summertime of my first year
there's a huge suite of offerings that
the school provided for us completely
free they come up with new electives as
well for us to understand more about the
pandemic
okay
and
i forgot to mention that i applied to be
a student ambassador in my
first term and that's because how i got
to where i am today is through the help
of internet ambassadors whom i chatted
way through my application journey so i
really wanted to give back and in that
summer there's a lot of spare time i
actually take part in my recruitment
events to have conversations with
prospect and share them about the
wonderful experience that i had
in my second year was when the career
transition happened
i could recall that the internal
recruiter from g-research reached out to
me on linkedin
and i was very excited
for the job but i made sure that before
my very first interview
i
fully made use of the career
center because they've got a full suite
of
workshops that will help you as well
one of the main
help that i got through the
career coaches is
the mock interviews because i know that
there's only so much you can prepare
for an interview you can type up your
responses on the words of people and you
can stand in front of the mirror and
rehearse upload but i think that the
real practice is um
having a mock interview with somebody
actually in front of you
[Music]
listening to what you say and you can
observe their facial feedback as well
and i would also encourage
my
career coaches throw me curveball
questions so that i'll be able to think
on the spot in fast on my feet when i
have the actual interview
there's a lot of
great workshops that the career center
organized as well and i think one of the
biggest takeaway was the salary
negotiation workshop where they bring in
um the career coaches from i think the
environment sloan program they also
bring in some external speakers who work
for
top
recruiting firm i think it was robert
waters if i recall correctly
and i really took down notes from that
session and when i negotiated my
contract with g research i got exactly
what i asked for which i thought that it
was
extremely helpful and fruitful
fast forward to the end of year two
that is when you are about to wrap up
your journey so as an exco of the squash
club i try to hand over
my duties but prior to doing that
you will go through a very interesting
experience of speaking to the new admits
new students and you interview them and
find the best
xcode to take over your role
and how i concluded my two-year myth is
i ended up i ended up at 2 years with a
bank
i applied for the block break exchange
at cbs it's very competitive because
everybody wants to go to columbia you
have to submit if i recall
an essay that
is 500 words long and you have to
convince the program office on why you
want to take
the exchange and how it can help you so
i guess that's some science here
[Music]
and back to you charlotte
amazing thank you
so much andrew for running us through
your whole experience you fit so much in
to that time considering you were a
part-time student as well so not even on
campus full-time
and we did get um
some great responses to the poll so i
don't know if we want to
launch those um briefly as well
um
just so that we can see
so the question was i hope that the
masters in finance program can help me
and i can see that the majority of
people uh said that they hoped that it
would help them grow my knowledge and
finance and management skills i think
when it gets the question
um we will see how uh whether
andrew and ezra walked away feeling that
it uh helped them with their knowledge
in finance and management
okay wonderful thank you to those of you
who are already sending questions
through for andrew as well we will get
to those shortly um but for now i am
delighted to hand over to ezra chalick
who is a masters in finance full-time um
graduate from 2020 and who's going to
talk us through her full-time journey
thank you so much charlotte and i can't
see everyone's faces but hopefully
everyone's doing well and you guys are
smiling on a saturday midday in london i
don't know where you are in the world
but
um it's it's very nice to be here i love
being involved in these events because i
think once you become a part of myth
you're always a part of myth and i think
that's
you know the beauty of the program even
though like you know it's challenging
throughout you come out as a better
person i think towards the end of it for
yourself and for your career
um to go over my personal journey um
i personally haven't done as much as
other people have i'll be very honest um
especially looking at what andrew has
done and what previous people have done
so i think it's a really you know
personalized decisions to how you want
to cater or how you want to
set up your career path or your journey
through lbs
so this is my own
way of kind of going through it so i
don't know um it came i came out
it came out okay towards the end so
um to begin i to give you a brief
background of who i am so
pre-lbs i
was working at deutsche bank i did
equity sales and trading for a very long
time and it came to a point where i
wanted to transition my career and you
know
looking at what i could do i had a
colleague who was an lbs alumni who was
an lbs myth alumni and she introduced me
to the myth program and all the
positives that came with it so that's
that was kind of my initial introduction
and you know through these sessions that
i attended back in the day it was face
to face it came to a clear decision in
my mind to join the myth program to
further enhance my career and i'm very
glad i chose the full-time program or
circumstances led to me doing the
full-time program because you know i
think you have to give the program 100
justice no offense to all the
part-timers um
i i think you have to be in campus all
the time meet the mbas
uh meet all the you know ma'ams and the
mims and kind of get the full sense of
what lbs has to offer
and i really enjoy that journey so if we
go back to august 2019
i think your journey will begin with
the introduction of lbs what the myth is
uh you'll start your core classes and to
be very honest the first term is quite
intense but it's a it's a very good
intense uh you get to go through
you know deep dive into accounting
investments
corporate finance
and i think those are the three main
classes that you have to take and you
know they're very experienced professors
so
it was very good for my career um to get
into that insight and get to that
intense study period but you have your
study group with you your five to six
people as andrew mentioned it's all from
diverse backgrounds so if you don't know
one thing some other person will know
one thing and i'm still very much really
good friends with all my study group um
members so you really build that very
you know good relationship because
you have to spend a lot of time with
your study group in addition to that you
know the myth cohort in my class was
about 117 people i became you know the
[Music]
um
i i became one of the
academic reps so you get to meet a lot
more people
and
you get to enjoy people's times you get
to interact with your classmates a lot
more in a much grander fashion and once
it comes to electives you get to meet
the other um
mba people as well
but anyways going back to my career
going back to my journey so um august
2019 is when you start
hearing about career how you want to do
your career and that's when all the
sessions will start happening in
addition to that that is essentially
when companies start coming in to
present
to the students in terms of what they
have to offer for lbs students and you
know i came in a very
very clear mindset that i wanted to do
ib
and
i think i my one advice to you is to
figure out what you want to do with your
career quite early on
um because
you know or be very clear as to what
path you want to take whether it's i
want to do asset management i want to do
pe whatever it is because it can get
quite overwhelming as everyone's trying
to figure out what they want to do so if
you have a clear mindset i think that
kind of
makes everything a bit easier further
down
the recruitment path you go so for me it
was all about ib so i very much focused
on attending all the ib sessions the
sector presentations going to all the
mat uh all the finance club
they arranged these um
modeling sessions
or tutoring sessions or you know going
speaking to
the career uh career lead which is
alexandra she's great so it was for me
it was all about how what can i do to
get into ib and getting into ib is quite
competitive um
so
for me it was
it was a quite narrow path and
it was a bit of a risk but i'm glad it
worked out in the end
but so september to december this was my
main focus i would say and if anyone
meet anyone that has gone through the ib
recruitment process
this will be
very similar you're very focused on
networking coffee chats
um prepping for your ib interviews in
addition to that you have your very
intense
uh core classes so for me august till
december 2019 was very intense
and on top of that you have you know the
additional social events that you as a
human should attend and i'm very glad
that i met very ambitious and very
driven friends along the way that have
supported me and it's about building
your own community and people who will
support you through your journey so i
was very glad to have met very
you know supportive but ambitious people
that drove me towards
my goals throughout um
throughout especially the first term
and so the lbs courier center supports
you throughout the whole process they go
through your
resume they as andrew mentioned there's
a lot of mock interviews
there's massive
amount of lbs alumni that have done what
you want to do so it's all about you
reaching out to lbs alumni it's all
about kind of understanding how you want
to shape your networking your career
path
to get to where you want and i have a
lot of examples amongst my friends that
have been very successful especially
finding jobs through
networking with alumni
and moving on to january i had the ib
interviews
and you know i got an offer from
citibank
and that is when the electives begin for
me this was the most fun part where it
began because i had gone through the
recruitment process i had my offer and i
was in a place where i could choose
electives so this is where it became a
lot more
what i wanted to do rather than
you know these are the core classes that
you have to take so i definitely took
advantage of all the um mba classes that
were offered for us
well whether that be um
i took negotiations
i took a few other classes that were
much more strategy and management based
i think that's very important for us as
myths who are very quantitative to begin
with to have a very well-rounded
skill set rather than just focusing on
the academic corporate finance but i did
also obviously take
you know advanced financial analysis
advanced um corporate finance so classes
like that you have to take you are an
lbs smith
but on top of that i had to i thought it
would be good for me to gain more
exposure to the mba world
and to meet other people as well and
then in march 2020 i went to tattoo and
i if you get into lbs 100
hands down you have to go to tattoo it
is the event of the year
and i put a picture of the light show on
the campus it is so much fun um
and the whole campus just becomes this
massive amusement park so i highly
recommend going but anyways tattoo
happened in a week later um it was
lockdown so
a very um
diverse two
ends of two weeks but
um
so i think most of my myth after march
2020 has happened through lockdown so if
you go into the next slide
um
i think it's just all of lockdown not
much fun for me anymore um
so
the third term for me was all about
lockdown kind of preparing myself for
the summer internship
uh networking to get into a team um
again all on lockdown and i decided to
stay in london because i wasn't sure
where i was i would be able to do the
internship so
london during lockdown was not very fun
but it was all about me preparing myself
for the summer internship
and
eventually i did the summer internship
received the offer
um i did do the fourth term i think if
you have the optionality to do the
fourth term you should 100 do it it's
very chill uh you take a few classes
that you have credits that you are
interested in
and i kind of strategically took the
decision to take the fourth term because
i was starting in february
my job in 2021 so i was like might as
well
um and it's definitely a good thing that
i did it i took a few other classes that
i originally wouldn't have thought of
doing it and it gives you a bit more
time to
um stay at lbs i would say but again
most of that happened for me in lockdown
despite hoping that it wouldn't
so again not much fun for ezra and then
at the end um because i got the offer i
joined city in february 2021 within the
industrials group at ibm i'll end there
um i'm happy to answer any questions or
you know give any advice happy to give
advice
thank you so much ezra another fantastic
example and definitely some contrast you
can see between both of your journeys
not only with one being part-time and
one being full-time but also some of the
clubs and activities um that you chose
to be involved in and so at this point i
will invite maria and andrew and to come
back and i think we can stop sharing um
as well and then um we're going to take
some of your questions so thank you to
everybody who has sent a question either
directly to me or um through on the q a
box or on the chat box do feel free to
keep them coming and we've got about 20
minutes we're going to take some
questions now and so very happy to get
to them
so
great examples of how you fit as much as
possible into your time at london
business school as you mentioned some of
yours was through lockdown but i saw in
your slide that you still managed to do
lots of networking in that time and
obviously made the most of all of the
virtual opportunities that were still
provided andrew you mentioned how
quickly the school managed to flip um
into virtual learning and a fully
virtual experience um which you know the
school i think really invested in um and
so that we have that option there but we
are very happy to be back to the
classroom first for this year
um so i thought that maybe i could ask
both andrew and ezra a general question
of your
key reason to go and do a masters in
finance program and specifically you
know post experience masters
and were you looking for some of those
extracurriculars so as a for you for
example were you really looking for a
school that could offer you that career
support and andrew you were so involved
in clubs and travel opportunities and
exchange were you looking for a school
that had those or was that just a
pleasant surprise once you arrived at
london business school
and that's where maybe you could start
yeah i'm happy to start i think there's
not many opportunities to do
masters in finance at our level
especially if you've worked a few years
so i mean at that point in my career
when i
wanted to step change into something
else i either had to do an mba or a myth
and
i chose to do the mba be i took not the
nba don't choose the nba um i chose the
myth because
i knew i wanted to stay in finance i
didn't want to go into any other path
and
one of the may i i only applied to lbs
myth program by the way uh and the
reason why i did that is my colleague
really sold the program really well
and um i had the chance to meet peter
johnson and i think everyone should meet
peter at some point uh he was i think he
i met him once in one of these events
and it was like hands down the sweetest
person and he was like yes you should
definitely join the myth these are the
reasons why
and it i think for my career aspirations
it really fit well into why i should be
here because i wanted to stay in finance
i knew what i kind of eventually wanted
to do
and
you know my colleague was like you have
to join it so it was a very specific
thing for me but
uh there's not a lot of opportunities to
do it at our level and you're not
you can either do an mba or a myth and i
think
if you want to do finance you do it at
half the price and half the time so i
think it has a lot more positives than
uh negatives for me
great thank you as uh pj gets to mention
again who you are going to meet in the
next session and for anybody joining us
today
um and andrew for you um you know
fitting in so much extracurricular was
that something you were looking for
especially considering you were a
part-time student or
and did that just happen to to be
available once you joined lbs and
therefore you made the most of it
yeah sure so the reason why i could
squeeze all that is also partly because
i moved from where i live previously in
canary wharf so paddington which is just
um two tube stations away from campus so
i know that it's a part-time student the
experience may not be as
wholesome as compared to a full-time
student so i just thought it wasn't that
i'd be close to the school so that if
there's any events networking events on
campus recruiting or even
a random squash games that people ask on
whatsapp chats i can be around and
be present as well those were
some of the main pointers where i
wrote down my list when i was thinking
of which program to apply to
and the reason why i go for the myth i
would echo everything that ezra i'm
saying half the price half the time and
on top of that you can even do mba
electives as well and again i knew that
with
six years of experience in finance i was
quite entrenched in that role and i knew
that if i want to continue to excel in
that career i would love to specialize
in finance and
instantly when you join the program you
meet your network just grew instantly
because your classmates really working
finance across all different functions
that was incredibly
important to me but of course i've got
friends who go for mba programs they
like to meet
engineers consultant etc it's just
absolutely individual i just want to
stay focused and be very specific with
my goals
thanks andrew i think we hear the term
fomo fear of missing out at london
business school a lot because there are
so many opportunities not only all of
the ones that maria mentioned but the
extracurricular as well and and so as
you mentioned andrew really sort of
prioritizing and remaining focused on
why you chose to take the masses in
finances is key throughout your study
um
now next question you both happen to
be in london um prior to joining london
business school which isn't necessarily
a common theme especially in the
full-time program where we have a very
global class and people joining us from
various regions of the world and was
that a consideration andrew i'm sure
being part-time it was you had to still
go to work um but for you maybe ezra was
that a consideration that you really
wanted to stay in london um or were you
considering well you mentioned that you
only applied to lbs but was london a key
location for you would you have
considered anywhere else
no um i had
i have moved to london in 2018 so i
really like living here
and if there's such a great program here
what's you know there's
no point looking elsewhere apart from
like moving back to the states and
that's not something that i wanted to do
necessarily so
you know it was you're not you don't
have a lot of choices and if you have
the best
program in your in the in the city that
you are currently in and why i look
elsewhere
my thought
yeah absolutely great way of looking at
it thank you ezra
um maria staying with that london um
theme of questions um deborah mentioned
earlier how we really leveraged that
london location throughout the programme
and can you share maybe a key london
experience in the programme or an
example of that that you would like to
highlight of how we really make the most
about london location and being in the
heart of a business and financial hub
i mean
lps is in a very central location um
it's it's easy for people to move around
um i know it's
it's it's all about the journey and
about studying but being in london as
well it connects you very well all
around the world and you can go for a
city break
somewhere outside the uk or you can go
for a weekend somewhere nearby london
um um there are so many things to do in
london i think most students especially
wonder students that move to london
uh for the first time i think they
really appreciate everything that
that london has to offer
great thank you maria and maybe i could
stay with you for a question that we
have on the q a box
um
which is how should finance
professionals distinguish between the
myth and the mba and what are the key
points to consider while making this
decision as i work across smith and b
i'm very happy to take this but maria
i'm interested if you could share your
thoughts initially on maybe the
differences in the two and what people
should consider if they
fit both profiles
um i think this is this is exactly what
astra mentioned before that if if you if
you know that you want to stay in
finance
the the masters and finance program is a
very
um it's a very tailored
program it's a very finance focus and
it will get you where you want to be in
finance
whereas the mba program is is more of a
generalist degree will give you a lot of
skills um and you can you can then make
an informative decision of where you
want to go after the mba but for the
myth program um it is for people that
are very focused and they know and they
know what they want but as you said you
know we're more
um part of programs
yeah i i can't really add much to that
that's exactly the the key point really
what are your aspirations and then once
we know that we can help to guide you as
to which program would likely be best
for you and in short and in summary if
you have a finance background and you're
looking to remain in finances as we said
why wouldn't you take the masters in
finance um and ezra also
indicated towards um some of the
financial commitments as well in that it
is a shorter program it's a one-year
full-time whereas the nba is two-year
and in terms of cost of tuition fees and
it is less for the masses and fans than
it is for the mba and obviously an
indication of how much time you're on
campus and studying as well so um there
are a few things to consider but we're
very happy in the recruitment team to
help you to
work through those considerations and to
discuss your profile with you and so if
you haven't already noticed it down the
email address would be myth
london.edu would be very happy to help
you
and
i quickly add one point um if possible i
think if you're stuck between
you if you do not know what you want to
do post
your experience at a high level
education then i think you should go for
the mba but if you're set on doing
finance afterwards then the myth is
probably the best option the reason why
i said say this is the myth is a very
intense course academically and in terms
of recruitment so
i think you have to have a set level if
you have to have the determination
and
the mindset to stay in finance because
you'll find it quite difficult
amongst all the things that you're doing
within the program to for example all of
a sudden switch into tech it i'm not
saying that it is not possible people
have done it but you'll just have a bit
more of a harder time than your average
mba switching from a very finance
related
post experience program into going into
google
um again there are
circumstances that has happened that
i've seen but you'll just have to work a
bit more harder at it so i think you
should be very considerate about what
you want to do and that's what i said in
the beginning i think you
in the beginning should know at least
ultimately where you want to end up or
have a
i have an idea of what you wanted to do
because people that kind of decided i
don't know in june 20 june what they
wanted to do were too late um
you don't have a lot of time in the myth
to decide but if you're really undecided
the mba gives you the optionality of two
full years of deciding what you want to
do
uh so i'll just leave it at that but um
just things to consider
thanks as well i think they're great
additions to the conversation and early
we spoke about how the myth community
really is a community within a community
so at lbs there are all of these
resources all of these opportunities and
no matter which program you're in if you
want to have access to the um institute
um around innovation and
entrepreneurship you have access to it
and but realistically it's around how
that's going to fit then with your
program and with your aspirations
following the um program as well
um okay andrew coming to you then there
are some questions in the chat about
wait you traveled four times um how did
you manage all of that and i think it's
quite normal for london business school
students to make the most of the
location being in london the access to
four international airports in one city
being able to travel
hopefully now fingers crossed that are
in a almost postcoded world um
and
yeah how you managed to do that so can
you explain
um how travel works at lbs maybe you
could share with our audience what
tracks are um and how you and your peers
uh managed to fit that travel wing
sure sounds good so um there are four
four flights on my slide but i've only
traveled once which is to spain with my
classmates
um
my original plan was to do one elective
in dubai
and
because of coffee things transition so
online which makes things easier for
me to take more electives offered in
dubai as well which explains why in each
term i've got one elective that is 50
cm students
and there is also a very interesting
program called gie i think
it was covered earlier on where you get
to travel to frankfurt and paris and
that counts as one electives towards
your move requirement as well that was
one of my original plan when i applied
to a news program
and i think that it is a very
interesting opportunity and for other
prospects i strongly encourage you to
try that because
frankfurt and paris is just
an hour to away from
london and while you're here
in europe england try to go out and
explore and
open up your horizon if you are from
the us or asia or africa
wherever you're from
thanks andrew and while we're on the
topic of
travel and global connections maybe we
touched upon earlier the classroom
experience in terms of the interaction
between students and faculty but it
would be really interesting to hear your
perspectives on the classroom experience
and peer-to-peer as well and how you
learn from peers within the classroom
and how interactive they are so whether
some of your learning was virtual or
hopefully some in the classroom as well
could you share some um insights as to
what that kind of debate looks like
exactly in the classroom
sure sounds good that also kind of like
bring us to the question on what's the
difference between
the myth program and the cfa because i
think cfa is like
one-way street it's very passive
learning you just read the books sit for
an exam whereas in a myth program
there's a lot of interactions involved
as well with the professors with your
classmates
and
the content that the professor go
through you always see at least five
hands being raised
and you'll see very experienced students
in
sharing their real life experience with
the class and those debates get very
interesting as well
in terms of how diverse
the profile
of the students are as you can see here
the program office is very diverse at
maria she's great i'm from singapore
that's right
american the professors are also very
diverse as well if you could recall
david mentioned
um
three of the professors um
and
i took his class
um real estate finance
with the dubai cohorts his
portuguese
um jada professor that david mentioned
was
suleiman bashar he teaches financial
engineering very interesting character
if if i'm not wrong he's hungarian and
he's greatly smart
and calix edmunds which i think sarah
and charlotte has mentioned she's
british i think
um yeah so
as you can see here the students are
international the faculty is
international
and the staff of lps is also incredibly
international so you get a very global
experience just by doing it london
business
thanks andrew and ezra mentioned um
study groups and that's another example
of how you can really make the most of
those global connections as we ensure
that they are very diverse in terms of
nationalities and in terms of your
backgrounds and experience
professionally as well and so that you
can learn from one another and that kind
of collaboration and curiosity we really
encourage that in everything that we do
at lps
um so another question um on the q a and
one that i'm really keen to ask you have
both graduated now you've gone on to
fantastic roles um in new companies and
so i'm interested to hear whether you
have managed to leverage your network or
how you've leveraged your learning from
london business school since um
graduating
have you kept in touch with people and
if
maybe i can
take a go at this um
i think
you know it sucks leaving school not
gonna lie um the real world is not as
fun as lbs um but you know i
all of my really close friends i made
over the year and a half i was at lbs
have remained very close friends of mine
still
i see them
every week every day um so if i can uh i
think the relationships that you build
the close relationships that you build
are amazing so
um
to give an example i think i have a very
close group of like six seven friends
that you know they're across a um
a and b um i guess i don't know if you
know we
usually the full-time bars are split
into two a and b groups
um so i was in group b but you know over
the time you meet friends um but anyways
all my close friends are from if a long
story short and in terms of uh what i do
every day is what you learn
in school i very much appreciate at
least paying a little attention to what
chris said was saying in accounting so
um
every day i do accounting every day i
analyze companies um every day i look at
calculating wax so
you know everything that myth has taught
me i use on a
daily basis the one thing that the myth
hasn't taught me is powerpoint and you
know as you can see my skills they're
still evolving but um i think that's the
only thing that hasn't taught me that i
kind of had to learn on my own
maybe we need a powerpoint club next to
um
sounds good i'll get i'll be a
um andrew you mentioned
um
[Music]
a little bit about how you had managed
to sort of keep some connections um with
london business school as well and how
that
negotiation um
negotiation and bargaining elective
really helped you to actually secure
your salary in the next um
in your next role is there anything else
that you'd like to share that you've
managed to make the most of since
graduating or to tell us a little bit
about the network that you've managed to
build
sure i think the connections that you
build in lvs
in fact both the myth part-time and
full-time courses we join the schools
better and we have a lot of drawing
events together as well and
i'm also quite close to
some of ezra's um classmate as well for
example i
i will play poker with a small group of
them they will invite me over and then
we'll have drinks and poker and i see
ezra smiling because i think she knows
what i'm talking about
um i've also got a very good friend who
flew back to brazil she works in
consulting right now
but
every time she's in london she'll like
invite us out have dreams together and
and these are some examples of the
strong connections you get across myth
programs
and in terms of the people that i stay
in touch with
um there's this guy called sri i played
tennis with him at a region's park so
lbs is just right beside regent's park
and death chinese caught there
it's called the view to win so we'll
play there and of course there are very
very hard to book unless you're a member
and it's impossible to get a membership
there for some strange reason
i've got another classmate called jay
hill
she's also from singapore originally and
she leave like just one tube station
away from me and like sometimes she will
invite me over to a place to
go after her dog while she goes out so
um like we are very very i'm close
friends
and i've got another friend called eddie
but he will call him once in a while
randomly because he's actively in search
for jobs and he'll say oh andrew i've
got
an interview with credit suisse next
week i know that you work for them five
years ago do you have any
insights to share with me and these are
some examples of conversations that we
have
even after graduation and i'm sure
in march 12th this year when we have our
reunion we're going to bring back
memories for good friends so i'll be
excited to see everyone there
thanks andrew and i think that last
point on that on that relationship that
you built and and those questions that
you get from friends when they give you
a call now and then
is so key that's exactly what the lbs
network is about and why everybody
remains so active is because you can
just pick up the phone if you're
applying for a new company and you'll
know somebody who has worked there or
who has a connection who did and
i guess it's really like who needs
linkedin anymore when you have uh london
business school
so thank you so much um ezra andrew and
maria for joining us for this
conversation thank you for sharing your
journeys and maria thank you for sharing
all of the options available through the
masters in finance programme um do stay
with us for the next session and where
you are able to ask any questions to our
current students our student ambassadors
and and we will see you in just a couple
of minutes oh before you go anywhere i
apologize i do need to tell you we are
going to change and link now so that we
can go into breakout rooms so if you
could just take the um link from the
chat box you'll just need to copy and
paste that into your browser and join us
on there for our next session um so that
you can
meet in small groups with our
ambassadors and have more intimate and
conversations moving forward so we will
see you over there in just a couple of
minutes see you shortly
bye everyone

### Exploring the Masters in Finance - "Ask us anything" with MiF Student Ambassadors
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi9wyavA4IM

Idioma: en

okay i think everybody managed to make
it over to the new link safe and sound
um we can definitely get started anyway
um and see how we get on i'm sure some
more people
may come along and join us
um so hello and welcome back to our
final session today ask as anything with
our masters in finance student
ambassadors
we have four fantastic ambassadors who
are excited to meet with you today and
take any of the questions that you might
have we have mishka david peter and
ashwito who will probably introduce
themselves very shortly and you'll hear
a little bit more about them
um we have a number of ambassadors
though who are here throughout the year
to help you aside from the fall that you
will see joining us today and you can
find all of our ambassadors listed on
the website and we also have a fantastic
student directory which we can send you
on request if you just email myth
london.edu and to ask the directory
we'll send you that and you'll have more
information on all of our ambassadors
so we're going to start this session
apologies for the dogs barking in the
background i think the post might have
just arrived
um we managed to get to this point today
though which is great normally it comes
a little bit sooner than us
and so we'll start this session with a
short panel before moving into breakout
rooms where we can have more intimate
and informal q a opportunities
with our ambassadors today
so leading this session we have the
previously mentioned a few times today
peter johnson or as we know him pj our
senior recruitment and admissions
manager for the masters in finance and
we have charlotte tate another charlotte
um our student recruitment manager for
the masters in finance so i am delighted
that i will hand over this session and
to be
jointly run by peter and charlotte
and i'm going to sit back and enjoy the
panel um before perhaps joining you in
the breakout room so thank you so much
for joining us so far today i hope that
you have found all the sessions very
insightful and fruitful and you have
lots of great takeaways for yourselves
today we very much look forward to
seeing you all again soon
thanks pj i'll hand over to you
great
thanks very much charlotte i've been
given rather a lot of coverage already
which i'm very grateful for
so i'm peter johnson universally known
as pj i'm the
senior admissions manager for the
masters in finance
i've actually worked at lbs for 33 years
so probably more than most of you have
been alive i've been at
lbs in fact for exactly half
my life i realized it was my 66th
birthday at christmas
so i started off initially working in
ita lbs
and i've worked on the masters in
finance since we launched the full-time
program
back in 1994
i've seen it gone from uh strength to
strength i think one of the great things
is that um
our original vision of launching a post
experience program
was such a good one and i think previous
speakers have
made that really critical
differentiation
of how different it is to study
alongside other finance professionals
relative to programs that are focused on
new graduates
and the other thing i think that's come
through earlier discussion is um
how much we've innovated the core of
what we teach has been consistent but
we've managed to
mobilize all our fantastic faculty
research
to keep the program relevant up to date
as finance evolves over time
so my role is the admissions side so me
and my team
we're the gatekeepers so ultimately our
role is
to select the best
uh and really diverse class and to
support you all the way through the
journey from where you first apply
right up to where you start the
programme
and i think we're very engaged
even though we're the gatekeepers we're
making all those selection decisions i
hope you'll find us very approachable
and very supportive
throughout your journey
and i'll hand over to charlotte
hi everyone welcome so nice to um see
you all here today and thank you for
joining us so i'm charlotte the other
charlotte
i'm the master and finance recruitment
manager um so i haven't been at the
school for as long as peter
been working in myth recruitment for
about three years now
um and my job is to help prospective
students with everything before they've
submitted their application so here in
recruitment we review your cvs we host
um one to one in
or phone consultations with you hold a
variety of events and support you
through the entire application process
so looking forward to connecting with
you guys later on in the session
great since now i'm going to ask our
ambassadors to introduce themselves so
peter the other peter let's go to you
first
hi uh good afternoon everyone my name is
peter sabo
i'm originally from hungary i've been
living in london for
almost six years now
and uh i work as an acquisitions manager
for european hotel investment platform
uh owned by apg a large dutch pension
fund
my work experience so far is in real
estate i've been working on the sales
side and buy side for for the past six
years now
uh and i joined the the part-time myth
program to strengthen my my technical
skill sets
and and to grow my my professional
network most importantly
fantastic thanks peter
david let's go to you next
hi everyone my name is david originally
i'm italian but i've been living in
london for over seven years now uh prior
to lbs my experience is mainly centered
in ecm and m a so i was working on the
capital raising and
financial modeling analysis and uh
my my the purpose
for me to join the myth has been to
extend my network um is a really
international school so it really allows
you to speak with people coming from
everywhere in the world and for me it
was a really great experience and then
also to enhance my
uh my skills in order to then uh
continue my um my career within the
south side and in the eminent and i'm
happy to be here
great thanks david uh ash you next
hi everyone good afternoon my name is
ashe and i'm actually from london
i am in the myth part-time class and i
am currently working at a fintech
company that focuses mostly on high
frequency trading
i actually have a computer science
degree as my undergraduate so i actually
focused more on the technology side of
the business
but i thought the myth would be a great
opportunity for me to consolidate both
my technical background and the
financial knowledge that i'd gained from
the program i think it really helps to
build a strong financial base so i can
use it in my current role but also if i
want to explore further options um later
on after the program and change my
career
fantastic thanks ash last but not least
mishka
hi everyone hi peter and charlotte nice
to see you again i am mishka i'm from
south africa um i spend most of my life
there i have a background i studied at
university of cape town and i studied
finance and accounting
and yeah i'm part of the full-time move
program i was personally a lifelong
dream of mine to join but i also wanted
to transition from investment banking in
south africa to investment banking um in
the uk so that was one of my primary
reasons for taking the myth and also i
mean all of my
colleagues here have said great reasons
for why they've taken them for me it was
also to meet diverse people i've met
people from all over the world in our
program it's extremely diverse and it's
a yeah it's a great course so far
great um
thanks very much mishka which actually
leads us
into our first question just but before
i do that just um how we're going to do
this i've got a couple of questions
for the panel
and then when we go through with that in
about 20 minutes or so we're then going
to split into two breakout rooms one for
full time one for part time
um
where we can focus in on the questions
for everybody who's um taking part today
so mishka just mentioned diversity and
maybe mishka i'll get you first to talk
about that i mean all schools i think
all top schools generally will
talk a lot about
diversity
but maybe give us a sense of how you
appreciated that at london business
school
in terms of
how it's been within the classroom maybe
touch a bit on your study group
and how that really impacts on your
learning journey
yeah for sure for sure peter that's a
great question
i mean in our class in our full-time
class it's about 160 of us split into
two streams
so within our class i've met people from
i think all over the world with very
different backgrounds um different
career journeys different reasons for
pursuing the myth so you're really
exposed to a lot of different cultures a
lot of different people um previously
when i was in south africa and in the
working world there i
met mostly south africans and people
from africa but within the muff i've met
davide who sits next to me in most of my
lectures from italy from lebanon from
colombia you every country you can think
about it um so yeah in my study group
especially we all have
different backgrounds uh
which really helps you um really get to
know people do your projects everybody
brings a different perspective
to your projects and the end goal
and it's just great learning with a lot
of people um and yeah i think it's been
great so far
outside of school as well you learn
about the various cultures
especially on the school holidays and
everybody gets together we spend new
years with some of our classmates
learning about different traditions from
colombia and what you do over new year
so i mean it's it's all great in school
but outside of school as well you expose
to these people and it's been an amazing
journey so far
great um peter um following on from that
give us a sense of we talk a lot about
the collaborative nature of the learning
environment
maybe you could give us a sense of that
and
perhaps how that's different maybe from
undergraduate study
absolutely i mean the you know how it
differs from undergraduate studies was a
real
i mean
one of the top experiences for me
not only do you have a diverse group of
people from diverse backgrounds but it's
also very diverse
experiences and they bring different
skills
uh to the table in in your study groups
and also in lectures so
you know in a study group maybe you
discuss a case study ahead of class with
four people in your study group
all of those people it's a carefully
curated group it's it's you know it's
not accidental and who you're in a study
group where everyone will bring a
different viewpoint people with maybe
different amounts of experience in that
field and you learn a lot from that
already and then you go into the class
you think you've heard it all from your
study group or you've heard a lot from
your study group and then and then
there's another 50 other people there
with again different experiences and
then the professor also brings some new
viewpoints so it's really um i think
being a post experience program adds a
lot um to your your study experience
there
absolutely ash
what's your
views on this
on the diversity and collaborative
nature
yeah i think it's been great actually so
even in my study group i don't because i
come from a very technical background
and having studied computer science they
don't have a huge amount of knowledge on
the financial side so
it's good to be in a study group where
everyone brings in some sort of
expertise from what they're currently
doing and their role or what they
studied for their undergraduate degree
as well so i didn't i hadn't studied
accounting prior to the program um but
we have an accountant in my study group
which is very nice um so it's been great
to learn from them outside of school as
well just to you know make things a bit
easier and like the transition for me as
well which has been um absolutely useful
for me
um another thing i would say is
like i can bring to the study group or
also into some of the our lectures we
have like purpose for finance and one of
the groups was asked to do like a
presentation on high frequency trading
and because i work in that space i was
able to help the study group
with some sort of points they could
include in their in their slides as well
so because of the diversity of like
financial
specializations but also um interacting
with everyone in the whole class has
been really
interesting because i haven't really
experienced that before so yeah
that's great davide um your take i mean
a lot of people talk about um
how competitive
um the business school environment can
be um is that your sense of it or did
you find a very different experience at
lbs
um
yes well it's a very competitive
environment uh but it's also very
supportive so what i found for example
uh also to consolidate what my previous
uh colleagues have said is
that there is uh
the the study group um form really helps
you to uh sometimes also get out of your
shell and uh the study groups actually
the people help you to um
to talk about your experience and to
also they they're very happy to teach
you about their experience too uh that's
for example they take that ash said
there was one example i have the exact
same example on a different area and
especially when we work together on
study groups then
you create a bond and then you also
during the lectures we have been all
lucky because we have been attending
also the
the school life in person which has been
an amazing experience and that's
when you really realize how
collaborative is the environment and and
also one more thing that i really
appreciated has been all the activities
that we have done through the groups uh
sorry for the clubs that lbs has which
is incredible because there are
professional clubs
non-profit extracurricular club sports
club and all this uh they really help
you to uh to meet as many people as
possible and also to
to learn new things and to discover for
for example interest you did not know
that you had before
uh so yes it's very challenging it's
very because also um all of us we are
applying for a sector that is extremely
challenging with the financial sector
but uh on the other side is also very
collaborative and everyone um helps you
to to achieve your best whether it's
from a study perspective or also when we
were preparing for interviews together
and has been that's why it's been a
great experience
i think it's it's one of the good things
about the british education system as
well is that because we don't use the
gpa system
um we use a letter grade system it
really encourages i think the danger of
gpa systems is that they encourage you
to do the things that you know that
you're going to do really well at
whereas our system really encourages you
to go outside your comfort zone because
you know that ultimately
what matters is
that you're studying things that
challenge you that are going to be new
and interesting
and i think ultimately you're
in competition with yourself more than
you're in competition with your
classmates
but davide you i'm just touched on clubs
so tell us a bit about that i think it's
such an important part of the sort of
enjoyment and also the learning
ecosystem at lps so which clubs have you
been in
involved in and
um well i've been uh
well i'm italian so first of all the
first club i went to was the italian
club of course um
however at the same time also i tried
also to join actually other uh
country other clubs that were for
example there was there is a french club
the latin american club on that
perspective you have so much choice uh
that is
unbelievable and it is really nice also
to um to actually know the traditions of
um of other countries and that's why i
try to also join other countries
club because i really wanted to know
more about them but also because might
might seem a stupid thing but also it's
a great way to improve if you have
second third languages in my case i had
my improving my spanish and my french
which is something i was not expecting
but is is a side benefit that i think
has been very valuable for me
um alongside this i also focused a lot
on the professional clubs starting from
the finance club which has been great
because it really helps everyone who's
interested to pursue a career in finance
to um for example
learn more about the sector or
specialize more on modeling on many
other areas they work alongside with
external
providers that helps you to um to
enhance your skills and then
in my case i'm also interested in
private equity so and turn around so
i've also been looking at those clubs
too and if you want you can also um
active uh actively uh work with them in
order to organize a seminar or to bring
some people as a speakers uh which i
think i find it very uh very interesting
also because it allows you to further
even more your network
absolutely um
panel in general um
say a bit who wants to say a bit about
student conferences who's taken part in
any of the student conferences or helped
organize
who wants to run with that
maybe
sorry nobody and then two of you
you go first
um so it's going to say that um we
haven't attended um a conference yet
this year but before we before we joined
the program we actually had the
opportunity to attend the women in
business equality conference that is
usually held in march
um and that's a great two-day conference
and last year it was it was virtual but
this year they're planning to do it in
person so i'm very excited to be
attending mad as well and it's a great
two days where they have a lot of like
workshops and also panel discussions
from women across different industries
within finance and in technology and
they all come together and um
it's just it was a really great
experience as well so yeah i'm looking
forward to that in march massive
flagship uh event for us hugely
important one peter you you wanted to
contribute on that
yes so it's um the conference that i'm
involved in is the real estate
conference within the real estate club i
actually attended that last year online
before i started the program i was one
of the things that
got me even more excited about lbs and
this year where we're trying to host
that in in person
and yes obviously you get to work
together with industry and if you know
that you're you're focused in a specific
sector then these this type of
conference also helps you connect with
alumni but it's also you get to
collaborate with students from other
programs so there's you know quite a few
mbas there's the mbas within the real
estate club and especially as a
part-time student because you're not on
campus during the week every day it's a
fantastic way to grow your network
across our programs outside of just the
one that you're in
you'd be surprised if i didn't actually
do a shout out for your out which i've
been involved in for many years which is
our
lgbtq conference and which is the
biggest lgbtq conference uh business
school conference in europe
and again that's all about a reflection
of the diversity
of the experience at lbs
and
plenty of opportunity when we go into
the breakout rooms to talk more about
that club experience
but i wanted to go on and um maybe
ask a little bit about um
how your career search has gone i'm
going to call on mishka first on that
so
how's that been going for you and what
kind of support have you had from the
career center
in that journey
i think you're asking the question at
the right time peter because we are in
slam jamming right in the height of it
yes yeah so maybe i'll start from when i
first joined lbs for me personally i
mean i had an idea of what i wanted to
do but i was still toggling with the
idea and i took quite a while to you
know decide what i'm gonna do to go for
it so i decided to meet with a career
the career teams at lbs they located on
campus you can schedule meetings with
them for either career advice or just to
help you with your cvs your cover letter
there's tons of workshops that you can
join almost too many that you actually
can't join them all it's impossible
but there's either one-on-one workshops
or workshops like in in a group where
your your peers will actually review
your cvs and give you feedback so it
really gives you a chance to work on
everything you can before you actually
apply to a job
so that started in about august
september and um because i was pursuing
the investment banking route that that
process started quite early for us so in
november we had to start with the
recruiting season and it's been quite a
journey so far we are in the midst of
interviews right now
we had to study for most of christmas
for all of us so all of the holidays was
been studying but i mean the lbs team
has been extremely supportive throughout
this process making sure that we have
training for the interviews a mock
interview setting up mock interviews for
us as well really just giving us every
possible resource that we can make use
of providing
guides that we can use to study and yeah
just really providing everything
possible so it's been great the support
has been there from day one it's about
it's really up to you whether you want
to utilize it or not and i mean it's
it's great to utilize it to the maximum
you have so many great people around to
ask for advice um all of the people
within the career center have experience
in the field that you want to join they
are from all the different sectors
whether it be investment banking
consulting you name it there is someone
with that prior experience there so so
yeah it's been great
right and i think i mean
we know how important it is because
um whether you're studying full or
part-time
everybody has career aspirations and
it's not just about the first job it's
about
long-term
career development over time and we give
a lot of support to our alumni as well
which is quite unusual very few schools
do that
and i think the other point i would
highlight is that the um specialists
you're working with in the career center
are people who come from a finance
background yeah they're coaches etc but
they bring that in depth there is that
in-depth um
sector knowledge that's absolutely
essential when you're preparing for
interview davide how's it been going for
you so far
um
well for me it's been great um since the
beginning i actually tried to um
leverage as much as possible the career
team uh because i really wanted to have
an in-depth understanding of
how was the investment banking sector
how what which was the best way to apply
and uh therefore as mishkam and
mentioned we had a lot of um workshops
specific tailored for the
cv for the cover letter and that's been
great because i've really seen the
difference actually recently before
applying i was looking at my old cv
before lbs and now the cv i have now uh
the information is similar but the way
in which structure the way in which
the information are delivered through
the new cv is completely different and i
can see uh that um
the help that i have received throughout
this month has really has been really
has been has been great
um and also on this uh one other thing
that i really appreciated was also the
mock interviews we had and to follow up
to what you just said has been great
because in my case i was doing these
mock interviews
and i had some technical questions for
for investment banking and actually we
spent part of the mock interviews
talking about finance in general which
you don't really do with someone who
does not have a finance background so
it's great to have someone who actually
has experience because it can point you
uh not to the right answer because
sometimes there are no but to the best
way in which you can uh you can answer
our questions uh and and then i think uh
has been has been helpful for me and i
felt very confident during the
interviews i've done and now we're
waiting the
the results uh because it's the
recruiting month for us yeah yeah
it's a tense time i know that yeah but
lots of celebrations to be had over the
coming weeks i'm sure uh ashley peter do
you want to give a
part-time perspective on how you've uh
engaged with the career center if you
have so far
yeah i was just going to say um
pretty similar to davides and mishka's
experience as well
um
i'm considering whether to stay in my
current role now
or completely changed my perspective i'm
quite interested in the esg landscape so
i had actually reached out to the career
center regarding the transition from my
current role into this completely new
space so the career center has been in
great in providing me with some advice
and also i hope to probably do some mock
interviews um in the near future with
some of the experts in the career center
as well so i think going forward i'll
definitely be utilizing the career
center a lot more um especially if i
want to transition into a completely
different area than i'm working in now
and it can be a longer transition when
you're studying part-time
because you're not reliant on
finding that position immediately on
graduation and i think that's
a significant consideration when people
are
thinking full time or part-time often
part-time
particularly if you're london-based can
be a really good route to affect
career change because
you're still in a job while you're
actually
trying to make that kind of transition
peter anything to add on the career
front
yeah i mean the way that i use the
career center is more on the coaching
side i started a new job just a few
months before starting lbs so i i wasn't
looking for a new job straight away that
being said from a coaching element um
helping with career planning it it's
incredibly useful no matter if you are
looking for a job activity or not
fantastic um
