Idioma: en

hey everyone i'm just going to let
all the participants file into the to
the room together
and then we'll get started
okay perfect well why don't we get
started
um welcome everyone congratulations and
welcome
um i'm so appreciative that you guys are
taking the
time to get to know this
lovely lbs community we're super excited
to have you
um we you know we understand that this
year has been
incredibly unprecedented and you guys
are making a decision
to you know continue your studies or
potentially go back to academics from a
job
and we know how big of a decision that
is and
um potentially you're also considering
you know numerous options in which
school to go to
so that's exactly why we started we set
up this event
it's the second year running it's for
you guys to get
an unfiltered and real idea about this
experience you could be having with the
lbs community
it's been created by students
and it's for you guys so we really
take advantage of this opportunity ask
all the questions that were you that are
on your mind
um so you got a really good idea about
what your two years could potentially
look like in the future
now before to get started i guess i
should i'll introduce myself
my name is santiago fernandez i am this
year's
student association president i'm
from the philippines um half filipino
half spanish
and i was educated in australia it's
it's quite an international
kind of mix but it's actually something
that you in common
uh with people at lbs um
my career as for my career i studied
economics and finance and worked for pwc
for
three years in their deals team back in
manila philippines
before uh deciding to take my mba in lbs
um and i guess the best way and the most
important message i can
give is just the insight into my own
experience and how i came to lbs and
what i really got from it to maybe help
guide you and you know hopefully have
some insights into what you can bring if
you decide to join us
um so i chose to do my mba because i
wanted to move my career
both geographically
from age from an asia focus in manila to
london and stay here permanently and i
also wanted to move it functionally
i wanted to move in from doing
mid-market deals in pwc
to investment banking one of the larger
banks um
and you know i applied to probably a lot
of the same
names that you're currently applying to
colombia insane yes
what i really wanted was of course a
top-ranked school
and i wanted the best place to be where
i could accomplish like these two career
goals
um but you know inclusive to that i
wanted a place where i thought i was
going to have the most fun
and and really enjoy um the two years
that were coming up and
the chance to go back into academia um
and you know as i started you know it
was
i really wish i had an event like this
when i was um joining because
i didn't know many uh lbs people
the the community in the philippines is
still
it's still growing quite heavily because
we do have an influence and people tend
to go to the
u.s school so you know um it was
you know once i was able to find a few
people who went here
the they each had a unique experience
about what lbs was which was really
interesting to me but there were some
threads
that really rang through that really
resonated with me and
um i kind of want to share a couple of
them because
once i kind of got here um once i
saw once i got here it actually really
these threads
i could see why people were talking
about them
one was really the geogra like the
diversity of the whole
the diversity of this community um lbs
like that is a really really unique kind
of
advantage to lbs and what i mean by
diversity is in
two parts one is geographic diversity um
you hear it from
basically all students and from the top
of my head
i can now i can think of pretty
countries such as
like most countries in europe most
countries in latin america
south africa lebanon north america as
countries that i can go to
and have a place to potentially stay and
a guide to kind of
show me the best parts of each of those
countries
and that's only thinking about my cohort
the nba 2021 cohort
it doesn't even like consider the
network of almost
you know 45 000 alumni we have
across the world um so that's just an
like a snippet of how diverse the cohort
is and
there it really there is really is no um
dominating kind of region or geography
in your cohorts the lbs team does a
great job in making sure there's
representation across the board and it's
evenly
uh there's even representation then
there's also
you know diversity and background and
you know
what what i'm so proud about and
this year is the push that lbs has
made towards diversity and inclusion
and towards you know people of different
ethnicities
people and people of different um sexual
orientation people of different
um kind of kind of income status whether
they're first generation
kind of students kind of master students
or coming from lower middle income
housing
we have people from all across
different walks of life and that's only
bolstered by the fact that we also have
multiple programs we have
students who are just finishing their
bachelor's degree and to doing their
first master's degree
we have of course the mbas who have had
a few years work experience
and then we have leadership careers who
have had
you know so many years of experience
that
that early careers and people in the
middle of their careers can kind of like
learn from and kind of network to kind
of expand their
idea about what they want the career to
look like
so it's really people from all walks of
life
and that's really something that stood
out and something that
i think there is it's hard to think of
another institution
maybe insad but it's hard to think of
another institution that has some
the diversity that lbs has
another point that really stood out
is the fact that lbs has a very
supportive culture
it's not competitive and
students really support look out for
each other
you i think it's it's really amazing
to see the lengths that alumni and
you know uh kind of second-year mbas or
or leadership careers leadership career
students go
to kind of become mentors and help
students
who are looking to move into the career
or looking to
move into geography whatever whatever
connection they may have of a person
wanting to achieve something and
some person potentially having done that
to some respect
they are happy to share their knowledge
and
help guide them and help work with them
so that that student themselves can
accomplish their goals while
uh they're doing their program
and even i know you know you're all in
the same community it's
and you're potentially applying for
similar jobs but
i can tell you firsthand and i know tons
of students like this
um when you're going through like in
looking for these jobs
it's still such a supportive culture i
was
prepping and i was prepping for
interviews for banks
with people who were doing those same
interviews and
it's a healthy relationship of pushing
each other and
also just knowing that you know whoever
gets it
you're putting your best foot forward
and you know you're kind of
ha it's a funny situation because you're
almost
you're sad that you didn't get it
sometimes but you're also happy that
your friends get that
and it it really rings through and
everyone's here to help each other kind
of
reach their goals one way or another
even if you're
somewhat sometimes competing with one
another
um another thing that that
rang through was the location of course
um
london is like it's it's one of the
mega cities it's lit it's in the center
of all the time zones and you have
almost all
companies in london and you know if i
could
put some kind of light on i guess this
last two years
if you're going to be stuck in a country
because of this whole pandemic i think
london is a great choice because it's
just such a
it has so much to offer even if you have
a lockdown
and that's kind of funny saying it
because you know there are parks there
are
just so many different areas of london
that
looks so different provide like artwork
and you know just a different vibe in
each area that you can look onto
it i've been i've actually been stuck
here since
i'd say last october and
it has i mean it still hasn't felt that
bad with the fact that you could go to
different areas of the city and have a
walk
of course it's it's it's diff it's
depending on like what
what you're allowed to do but i can say
i still was able to kind of enjoy my
time
my time here and also on top of that
you know if we think of like past and
the way that things are moving now
you have access to so many other
countries at your doorstep
like you have all of europe and you have
all of europe
to go to which is literally an hour
flight
um away and you know you can
and on top of that you know the middle
east like africa are also fantastic
areas to go to that you have it you're
kind of
almost at your doorstep really um
so it's really a fantastic place to be
and that's not even considering
when everything opens up and what you
can get up to
once you know if you know if
lockdown eases i mean right now um
i think many of us and the students who
are on this have probably been spending
the
last week taking advantage of the fact
that london just
opened up restaurants and allowed us to
meet in groups of six
so i think i've spent the last four
nights straight just at different
restaurants each night and having
different cuisines which is quite
special
to do in a city like this um
so that's that's geography i think
you know those are i guess the last
point i would say is
more just like internally on the people
who actually joined the lbs community
what kind of struck through was you know
i have never
this is what was told to me even by
people when i was
thinking about going you know i've never
been surrounded by so many
interesting smart and kind people at lbs
um actually one of them is
actually one of the nicest people i've
met is actually here he's actually
helped this event
james um and he doesn't know this
he didn't know this story but i met him
in the first day of orientation
and he was so nice to the point where i
thought it was a bit fake
meeting him and i was like surely not
ever i'm like surely he's just he's just
putting on a face and he's not this nice
but he actually is which is which took
me a long time to actually become
be like yeah he's actually this nice
it's it's incredible
to meet people um
who come to lbs because they
give to the community so much and what
i've
learned from my two years here is that
you know
what you give and the way you give it
you definitely get that back and i've
and the people who have
given the most whether it's sharing your
expertise
helping students in their career paths
working with clubs to create events or
just creating new ideas
creating a club um creating a new um
business while you're here and involving
other students around you
they tend they really get the most back
and so and i think that's really
important in a community because
it creates a like a level of comfort and
just
allows people to be their authentic self
which i think is really important
so i mean i i these were all
really key insightful points for me that
really resonated with me
and so when i actually applied
i got waitlisted and which was a very
very
stressful time i know it was a month and
i actually went down the route
towards insaad and towards colombia as
to kind of
kind of jostling up the two ideas to the
point where i was i was actually paying
part of the deposit fees already
um and but when i got my offer from lbs
you know i i turned my this is this is
really dorky but i turned my economist
brain on and i tried to think of the
decision
without the sunk costs and honestly it
was still
a very easy decision for me and now that
i've been
here i can like it has allowed me
to actually accomplish all of my um
all of my career goals and even more i
was able to get an internship at
credit suisse over the summer in london
and
after completing that internship i was
able to
get a full-time offer and we'll be
staying here in london afterwards
and my you know my story is just one of
and my story is just one of many
looking at your career of ones that have
been successful in
achieving what they've wanted to do from
people who wanted to move to
um you know consulting and getting to
mckinsey getting to bain bcg
to also more unique um to other more
unique and kind of like
uh you tracks where you have people
who are finding spots in luxury finding
spots in like in amazon in google in
microsoft
and all other kind of like industries in
lbs
so you know i go out i i
i say all this uh to kind of yeah
i guess if i was to capture my whole
journey and kind of leave you with a few
uh nuggets of wisdom um what i really
want to kind of
express is you know when you come when
you come to lbs
it's such a it's it's a really
supportive and
kind of um it's a really supportive
place to be
but it require you know you have to also
you know
put yourself out there get involved in
the community
um and really make the most of your time
here by being proactive with your with
clubs
with you know the people that you get to
meet and that come across your path
especially now because we live in a
world where
you know things are virtual um you know
sometimes in personal opportunities to
meet people are
uh you know we take them less for
granted because they're just not
sometimes they're just not as common
these days
and so it's really important to just
make the most of these opportunities to
meet the community um dive into the
dive into kind of opportunities that are
thrown at you in this community and
and and give back and give what you like
you wouldn't have gotten a spot in here
in lbs in these programs
if you didn't have something really
valuable to offer the community and
i think it's really important you know
you share that with others because i
i bet my bottom dollar that there is
always someone there who is actually
in need of it or who would actually
really appreciate it it'd be helpful to
them
so you know really get involved
keep an open mind you may have your
career path
and i'd say you know know what you're
trying to do
when you come into lbs and like
but also be open to figuring out things
along the way
i never thought i would be in the essay
president role when i
came into lbs it was not on my radar
at all and honestly it wasn't on my
radar until
one month before even applying to the
lbs president's role
but it's been one of the most rewarding
and challenging kind of roles and uh
kind of jobs i've had this year
particularly going through a pandemic
but it's
i i wouldn't change going back to when i
decided to do it i wouldn't change
anything
and i i've loved every moment of it and
i have grown so much from it so
you know know what you're tr like have
an idea about what you want to do here
because there is so many things you can
do in the lbs community and i'll touch
on more of it
as we go through what student life is
and you'll see more of it throughout
this whole event
but keep an open mind and be open to you
know trying out new things that you may
never have thought that you'd want to do
while you go over here so
that's a bit about my story
and really i you know take the time take
this time to also hear the stories of
other people who are
other students whether it's in this
event afterwards because
i mean i i've heard the stories of my
other fellow students
and i think i'm nowhere near as exciting
and interesting so
um i'll leave at that and i'll move on
to
talking a bit about what student life is
um
and i'll i'll work with james who's in
charge of the presentation so
i'll start off talking about you know
what
the s what the student association is
and i guess
give a bit of a broader high-level
landscape the student association we
are kind of in char we kind of oversee
all the
student-led activities in lbs and
i want to tell you that this is a huge
driving
engine to lbs life
it's amazing to see how many events and
how many
different activities students are able
to come up with throughout the year
it's been incredibly it's been
incredible
i've been incredi in awe because of the
creativity that's been brought
by the students in trying to change
different events to make them work to
this environment even throughout this
pandemic
um but what we really so again what but
bringing it back to the essay what we do
is
we represent your voice to the lbs
community
um we organize the some of the largest
uh campus-wide events we have
you know major flagship events that
you've probably heard of tattoo
um summer ball uh disorientation oh and
i
i even forgot i almost forgot welcome
series where where you guys come in and
we have
a fantastic bunch of events for you to
start meeting each other
and finally we also support like as i
mentioned the
all we have about i think it's almost 9
almost 90 at this point student-led
clubs
and societies on campus and
so i guess if we move um i'll talk a bit
about a bit more about how we're
structured to kind of help this
out could we move to the next slide
james that's all right
perfect um so we're 13
oh just one one more back if that's all
right i think we're on the junior expo
yeah perfect um so we're split
we have about 13 of us and we try to
cover
every single function of the lbs
experience um i i'm the president
but then you have people who are in
charge of you know the finances
sponsorship we have a dedicated person
for clubs uh
sports and clubs we have people helping
with any i.t issues you have
someone in charge of social we cover
everything and um
we do this so that we can be uh kind of
purposeful
in what we want to achieve every year
and
we and so nothing really is able to fall
through the cracks
um and we actually
you know all of us here are mba second
second years but we also hire we also
kind of like not hire
but we also recruit at the beginning of
every year um
junior roles and you know as i was
saying
the essay is one of the most interesting
um kind of bodies groups
in lbs to be a part of because you
really get exposed to
everything that lbs is doing both on the
school side and on the clubs and sports
side
you get a really cool insight to how an
educationalized
institution kind of runs and how
students kind of
work and collaborate with the school
to make all of these events happen
including this one
so if you're interested in kind of being
involved in that and being involved in
kind of making
impact that is kind of school-wide and
for the whole community i
really highly recommend for you guys to
join um if you choose to come to lbs
next year it's
like i said i i joined as a junior
treasurer and then
decided to take on the president role
and it's been one of the best decisions
um that i've made throughout this whole
pro like throughout my whole program
it's been
truly truly enlightening
um so that's a bit about the essay
i'll talk a bit more about how we're
kind of
the types of contacts we have that make
us so integrated
into the lbs uh with lbs school we
so we have reps from all the programs
um so we are mbas and we have
um but to make sure that we're kind of
considering
all the needs of all the different
programs we have someone from
masters in finance from mim mam
mfa emba and not only just in the london
cohorts in the dubai cohorts as well
so that any feedback from you guys comes
through
us and we're able to actually take
action where we can
and take note of it where we can um
we also engage
with the alum network as you may have
saw we have an alumni officer
and so any needs that students feel they
want to have or want to improve on with
in terms of
accessing the alumni network try to take
that on and something and we've been
working closely with
the advancement team to try to improve
that
through our platforms and improve that
through
um through uh
through improving the jobs on offer and
improving the crew kind of improving
what's on offer to our students in terms
of career-wise
particularly given the pandemic um
has kind of hit us and
finally we also have relationships you
know with me
you know with the dean with the kind of
the whole group that covers degree
programs and
um just so that if there's any aspect of
the program that students
really feel that they would like improve
their change
we can work on that a great example of
this is
we essentially um when we
went into our first lockdown and also
and you know the whole school had
all schools had to adapt to this new
kind of learning environment
we worked with the school over the
summer to
look at how to move from a virtual
learning environment to a hybrid
learning environment where students
could take classes
in person or virtually
whatever the circumstance allowed and
not and minimize the kind of
the difference in what that would be so
that's all students were getting
um an lbs quality level of
learning um and that was done
by like by pulling students together
from all programs
and literally sitting down with the
school throughout the summer um
to create this model which is now
running
and you know it's kind of fun it's it's
interesting
now to hear about the amount of to hear
the amount of times you know we actually
get oxford students and cambridge
students
that complain about why we they can't
have a model that's
similar to lbs and i've had exchange
students go on exchange now from lbs to
other
universities who point out that you know
our the hybrid model that we run the
flexibility that we have
allows us to run it a lot more
seamlessly
than some other schools in the u.s and
other in
other areas in the world and that's
something we're really proud of because
it was made
together between the school and the
students um
sorry and then i get and i guess moving
on from here i guess i should focus on
clubs because i think i'm running on a
bit low on time
um james if we could go to the next okay
i'll i'll just i'll touch on slightly
but i'll let
um guillerme who's our kind of sports
and clubs officer talk
more about the sports but as i mentioned
we have
kind of 90 almost around 90 uh
clubs and societies that are
kind of in lbs right now and they span
a whole broad range of what you could do
professional regional sports
and social um i'll it's probably best i
hand over to
uh gee now to talk a bit more about them
but
i'll just leave here what's fantastic
about this is it's ever evolving
and so even if there are no clubs uh
that you know fit your interests and
hobbies that you see
you know you can spend the time when you
come in when you start your program to
create one
and we've had a number of clubs be
created throughout the year um
and that we're super happy that they
actually work that that they're actually
off the ground and they're running
now but with that i'll pass you to ghee
to talk a bit more about it so
thank you guys for letting me share my
story with you um
i'll i don't know i'll share my email
and i'm happy to answer any questions i
highly
kind of recommend you guys uh connect
with on linkedin and just reach out to
me so i can talk to you guys there
but thank you again for joining i hope
you enjoyed the event i'll pass on to
you now to talk more about
clubs and sports well thanks thanks
santi
uh thanks for the introduction well just
to
quickly introduce myself my name is
guillermo i'm from portugal masters in
finance
and i'm the junior sports and club
officer clubs
are really one of the most vibrant parts
of this
lbs experience clubs are really where
students
are empowered to kind of make their
change and their impact
in the in the lbs community like santi
was saying we have this
link between professional clubs where
basically you can get help to get into
to leverage your your skills to get into
a certain industry
to get insights into a certain industry
we get regionals
uh we are and one of them is like the
portugal club it's an example of clubs
that catch you access to a certain
culture
to food from a certain country etc
and we have sports and social uh the
food we have a football club
regular club snow club that organizes a
very famous snow trek
uh yeah and like they are amazing
the issue for you will probably be which
ones to join because there are a lot of
clubs
and you'll be you have to be focused on
selecting only a few
of them otherwise you won't be able to
attend all events
just uh to the next slide sorry james
yeah and these are the multitude of
events that that club's organized tracks
are
trips to that can it'll be local or
into another country uh conferences like
clubs
usually have like uh and
certain clubs at least have a very uh a
very significant event that's
the real estate conference the private
equity venture capital conference
that are focused on a topic that brings
speakers that in workshops and there are
an interesting experience for a couple
of days or even a week there are
there are events that the mls a week
speaker series
where world-renowned speakers come to
lbs to
to to discuss a certain topic with
students competitions that really enable
you to
to bring practical skills that you learn
in a classroom into a
i guess a a fierce competition with
other with other
with other business schools sometimes
and obviously socials we all love
socials
and they obviously represent a huge part
of the
offering desktop set
i guess that's it thank you so much
for being here i'll pass it up to james
thank you santi and thank you gee for
the the quick overview and
and welcome i am the aforementioned nice
guy from santee's presentation which was
not a plug that i
uh said to put in but as a bit more of
an intro i'm james
boudreau i'm the senior incoming
students officer
on the student association and under my
purview is
is looking after um the the incoming
students and and the people who
are admitted to lbs so i'm going to
offer my congratulations
uh to all of you as well and and welcome
to what hopefully will be
an informative and and fun day for you
to explore lbs and get to know
more about the community that uh we all
fell in love with here
um and so the next session after the box
of this intro
is going to be the club fair which uh as
both santee and ghee and i will also
harp on
uh the clubs are are a big big
foundational piece
of lbs and and kind of allow you to
explore different topics so
um i know we're running out of time and
so we're going to actually flip to
the meeting link so the way that the the
fair works is that we'll have
a webinar link where you're going to be
able to tune in for this intro session
and the academic panel and then you'll
have a meeting link because then you can
actually explore the breakout rooms that
we have set here
so this agenda will be in the meeting
link and the the link that
that you need for for hopping over to
this session should be posted in the
chat now
but you also should have um a reminder
in your inbox to register for for the
event so
we'll flip over and we will start with
time slot one
uh which will have you looking at some
of the sports clubs that we have here at
lbs
um time slot two has some of our um
diversity clubs here with um with with
the the ones that santi was kind of
talking to in terms of how
our community really is it built up of
lots of diversity so that'll be great
and then session three
is a little bit more on the career side
um so with that said
welcome and i will see you guys on the
meeting link in the chat
that's posted there shortly
you

### Academic & On-campus Life at LBS (Student Panel) - 16th April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elZ3SkL0i38

Idioma: en

hi everyone welcome to the academic
session
we're just going to wait a couple
minutes while uh while people file in
um but you can you can expect to learn a
little bit
about the academics uh a bit of a what a
week
in the life of an lbser um looks like
and then uh of course
we've got a q a session with some
panelists um where we'll open the floor
for you guys to ask questions that you
uh you're interested in
this
all right i think we've uh
we've given people a couple minutes to
join it looks like we have
others joining but for the sake of
keeping time
um i think i'll start the the
presentation before the q
a and we'll have people file in uh as we
go through it
so for those who weren't there in the
first session i'll reintroduce myself my
name is james boudreau
i'm the senior incoming students officer
for the student association um
and i uh yeah which which is one of the
largest events
includes uh this one which we we try and
give you guys a flavor of what
lbs is from a student perspective so
that you guys can kind of get
the unfiltered goods from from the
students so
academics that at lbs academics is is
obviously such a core part
of what we do here in the programs and
and is something that i think lbs does a
very good job
in terms of organizing the courses and
allowing you to take an elective
uh that that really piques your interest
so especially in second year
um or for the second part of the terms
for the early careers
some of those electives are are really
cool and and in topics that
for myself i found very enjoyable um
so the way that the lbs lectures have
worked and i kind of want to give you
guys a flavor of both
pre-covered and what lbs did during
covet
because i think um somewhere in the
middle might be what the experience is
uh i think next year hopefully we've got
things back in person but you never know
so so i think this year we did hybrid
which was
an interesting experience but in the
event that everything is back in person
which
fingers crossed it all is the classroom
experience is really
a core component of how we learn here at
lbs and and how
we kind of go through all of the
academic rigor that we do here
so the the classroom experience is
really a mix of case and lecture based
um materials uh the case based stuff
is a lot about learning from your
classmates so as santi said at the top
we have such a diverse
cohort not only geographically but but
from backgrounds as well
um that it's really interesting to kind
of dig into a business issue with your
classmates
and hear the different perspectives that
people have um you know powerful moment
that i had
was was very early on when we were
talking about
business in different countries and how
um you know
how trust in in the system and trust in
the government can change how you would
make business decisions and and
coming from canada myself that that
trust is almost inherent so it was very
interesting to just even hear that right
off the bat i knew this was going to be
a
formative experience for me hearing
different people's perspectives in the
classroom
it's very collaborative it's not
competitive the the discussions are
robust but mainly because we build on
each other's points we'll push each
other
um if we don't agree but i think it's
really nice to hear people build on each
other's ideas
and and kind of build the round out the
business case by hearing different
people's perspectives and how they
tackle it
and lastly study groups are a core
component of the classroom experience
especially for the first
few months of the course there um and
they're explicitly made
extremely diverse so my study group it
was a canadian consultant
a tech guy from india we had a pr
person from uh the uk we had a
private equity entrepreneur from austria
we had an ibanker from brazil and then
we had someone from marketing from
vietnam
so just these amazing experiences that
you can hear
um in terms of how they would tackle a
problem
now moving on hybrid experience is
something that obviously we had to go
through this year
uh now in all hopefully in an optimistic
case
this is uh no longer here for when you
guys join but um still figured it was
worth touching on
so we got allocated into two groups you
were either a zoomy
or you were a roomie which meant that
you were in room
uh in person uh we would have full
discussions across both the zoomies and
the roomies and so it still felt
extremely interactive
the top left picture here you can kind
of get a flavor for the faces are up on
one side
the presentation is up the prop is in
the class
and the class is operating at about 50
capacity
but it was still super dynamic we were
still able to have those discussions
and as we started moving uh past april
12th which was a big day here in london
where people can now
have uh pints with each other outside or
have food outside
um spaces on campus started to be
available
and and stuff has started to be able to
be booked so this is how lbs has bridged
it
um until until this point and i think
santi
harped on it a bit but um it was built
with the students side by side and so i
think it's a pretty good testament to
to lbs to kind of have made this happen
and personal highlights a little bit for
myself because i think
talking about your own journey is how
you really um
kind of share what what it really is to
be an lbs student and so
you know throughout these last um last
year i would say
uh last two years it's been incredible
to see
how when life gives you lemons which may
be a
you know a really sour lemons in this
case over the last year
we've kind of turned it into something
special and and taken it and
and used in the academic setting so uh
we took a course called
modeling the economic impact of kovid
and
it was very interesting just to see real
time how
the knowledge that we're learning and
building can be applied to a situation
such as the pandemic i got to try
entrepreneurship for the first time in
my
developing entrepreneurial ideas course
so that was super cool
being a consultant myself it was very
interesting to try
entrepreneurship and try starting a
business which is the main assignment
for this course
even though i didn't get to go to tokyo
in person i got to do it virtually and
that was about three weeks ago
and some of my favorite sessions amazing
speakers came in
uh we got to have some japanese food we
had a sake session so
um you know still very cool to see what
we were able to do
without being able to go there in person
and has made me
extremely excited for the first time
that i get to go to japan
and then lastly away day which is at the
beginning of the year
it was something that we got to
experience as 2021
mbas and it's a very very big bonding
experience with your study groups where
you go through a bunch of challenges
um to try and to try and you know bond
with your study mates so that
you kind of can really ramp into the
academic year and get to know these
people from extremely diverse
backgrounds
and so helping i had one group of my
study mate one member who was extremely
scared of heights and so helping them
you know achieve a goal and get to the
top of this this tower here as you see
in this picture
um is something that it was so early on
in my lbs career but it's something that
still sticks with me
uh because of how formative that
experience was so i really hope that
this is something that you guys get to
experience
as well um and now moving on to social
life at lbs before we we go into the
panel
um the way i'm going to stretch this is
in a week at lbs
so we'll talk about this is obviously a
lot of this stuff
is is covered restriction pending but i
did want to give you guys a flavor for
what
our lbs experience felt like and
hopefully what what you guys will get to
experience
um when you come here next year uh and
so
the week at lbs we've got a few things
that i wanted to highlight and that i
think
makes it an lbs week extremely special
um
compared to you know maybe a week that i
would have had otherwise
so the first the first event is a foodie
trek to to lisbon so
effects and trips overall are such an
amazing part of lbs and
something that we're starting to see a
few of them get planned
in the postcovid will all within the uk
but in the post covered world
but historically there's been regional
and cultural treks which have happened
all all over the world uh japan and
greece are a couple of the really
popular ones israel
is also an amazing one that i was signed
up for
um the sports clubs do it so the the
rugby club
uh has actually planned their first
short tour after kovit which is gonna
happen in may so it's really cool to see
the clubs pushing this
and it's such a great way to not only
get to explore a topic whether it's a
region or a culture or
professional trek like private equity
where they would go to uh
i think dublin was one where they went
to for vc or tech in dublin bc and
berlin
um not only a great way to explore topic
but a great way to meet people i mean
traveling with someone is
is a really bonding experience and so um
i think a lot of these trips
and with london being so central uh
treks and trips are are such a big draw
for lbs and really hoping that
we see more of these come up in the next
few months and and obviously moving into
next year we hope that the the clubs
were able to start planning these again
um the next is a bit of a breakdown of
how programs and streams and study
groups work just to give you a flavor so
the programs and streams with the larger
programs
um such as the ecs and the and the mbas
and i believe the myths actually as well
um would would uh i guess the mim
program would would kind of split up
into streams and so that's
typically at least for the mba it's
about 80 people that you do all your
core courses with
and um and so you actually start to see
uh the same groups of people the same
discussions which is so great because
you you kind of make 80 new really close
friends right off the bat with the
streams
and then you have social reps who within
those streams will plan all of these
events we've done a couple karaoke
nights
we just had an event a couple of nights
ago where we went out and rented some
tables for six for all of us to dine
so you know even a year and a half after
being assigned to my stream it's still a
really
core group of people that um you know we
all hang out
and continue to do events together and
then study groups as i mentioned
i kind of gave you the breakdown of my
study group
which was the six of us but it's it's
such a cool part of lbs because of lbs
diversity and because people have such
amazingly different perspectives
explicitly being put into a group to
explore those perspectives
i think is such a powerful part of the
lbs experience and so
not only do you do academics together
but you kind of plan events together i
know
my study group has done some um
cook cooking nights where we went over
and we had a full vietnamese
cooking night and i love vietnamese food
so i was very excited about that
and she kind of taught me a few
different techniques where i can make
some my
myself so these types of things are are
just
you know they're constant at lbs they're
constantly um
helping you open your mind to different
places and to
to to kind of meet all these people from
uh such different walks of life
um the last thing that i want to touch
on is uh some of these school events too
so now nursing tattoo are uh
our two marquee events i would i would
say and sundowners is a weekly event but
tattoo is one
large scale event and sun owners is a
really great way for people to
hang out have a beer and get to know
each other in a bit more of an informal
context and so
every couple of weeks historically on
thursday evenings lbs would congregate
in the cafe in the front lounge and we
would enjoy free beverages
food and of course some stellar
conversation with your classmates
now this hasn't been happening every
thursday evening as you may have guessed
based on what we had
but this past sunday we just had our
first sundowners relaunch where we had
groups of six picnic in the park um and
it went off extremely successful we're
going to continue to try to run that
so expect that you know even in the face
of adversity
lbs is always trying to make sure that
social and and
people hanging out is at the forefront
and the students are really good at
at making sure that within the safety
guidelines that have been laid out that
we're still trying to do stuff like this
so sundowners is a good one
and tattoo is you know our biggest
social event of the year
we had one last march we're targeting
having one this july
um with the restrictions being raised
and it's an amazing amazing event where
clubs come and serve food they perform
in dance competitions
the whole campus is kind of turned into
this celebration of diversity at lbs
and it's truly a sight to see and then
it's all finished off with this
light show on the the building that you
probably see throughout all the
marketing materials
and it's really special to have you know
all your classmates standing there
watching this and and we really hope
that in july uh it may not be
everyone standing shoulder shoulder but
we hope that there's some version of
this
because it's such an important part of
what lbs represents
and then lastly though the city of
london
um i mean it's really hard to get get
through a social presentation and
for lbs without talking about london as
a city um
for those who have been you probably
know it's it's it's a really really
really
uh large and large city that you can
find
you know almost anything that you want
to do here um and even in times of
lockdown
there's so many opportunities to go
outside to go to parks
um to go and dine in in different places
and and have different foods from all
around the world
and on top of that it's got a thriving
business community that
helps support the academics in the in
the career side
of what lbs tries to do so i cannot harp
on it enough
a draw of lbs is certainly the fact that
you get to come
and be in london and really experience
uh what the mega city
in in the uk has to offer so some
examples here
park hangouts uh brunch on river boats
you know there's there's just countless
events that i can i can talk about
in terms of being here in london so that
will wrap up the presentation
side of this i wanted to try and get
through it as quickly as possible give
you a little flavor
for what uh lbs and what the city of
london does
uh for the student population and
without further ado
though i would like to introduce uh four
panelists that we have here or let them
introduce themselves as we kind of shift
to the q a
um open q a sessions so we have a few
questions here that
that we've you know we've heard from you
guys that you want
to to talk about but there is also the q
a function
and i highly highly highly recommend um
you guys
add questions that you want to hear from
and vote up the questions that you want
to hear most about
um you know we've got four panelists two
from the mba and two early careers that
are going to be able to share their
perspectives
on the questions and um we can quickly
move to
to your q a questions the things that
you want to talk about
um once you guys start start putting
those in so
um i'll i'll introduce the panelists now
if we could all turn our videos on so
that
the class can see um and
why don't we start with
um a bit of an introduction for each of
you guys just so that
everyone knows who you are uh program
where you're from
and and a bit of the story so i'll start
with uh i'll start with chidi here
and then we can move through
thank you can you hear me yes
okay lovely all right one um whatever
time it is where you are uh morning
afternoon evening um so my name is chidi
uh
on the nba 2021 with james in the same
stream actually
so um it's been an amazing journey
started in august 2019
uh before the nba i was a medical doctor
uh born and raised in london
uh practicing the nhs went to medical
school practice for about three to four
years
and i thought okay it's time for a
career change couple of mentors at the
time
said if you must do an mba that's the
only sensible thing to do next
i applied uh to lbs and heard great
things about lbs
got him started the journey and i
was looking at consulting banking when i
first started
so i recruited for banking managed to
secure four final round interviews with
the bold bracket
banks and interned with city over the
summer
so i'll be returning later this summer
apart from all that
the lbs student life and all the things
david mentioned have been fantastic i'm
happy to answer any questions about
banking
pitching careers and london life
awesome thank you judy uh i'll move to
corral
yeah sure hi can you hear me well yep
perfect so thanks james uh yeah and hi
everyone
and great to be here today and thanks
for joining us um so i'm corral nba 2022
i'm originally from tel aviv israel
and in terms of my career journey i
spent three years in the israeli army
i was an officer of soldiers on their
basic training and after graduating from
law school i
joined the law firm in tel aviv where i
was part of the commercial litigation
department
and i'm also the founder of georgia iel
it's a travel consultancy designed for
the israeli market
thanks to my business um i realized that
travel technology
and innovation are my passions and
that's why
i'm here today doing my mba exploring
these areas in such a multicultural
and inspiring environment and for almost
um let's say the past year i was working
as a product marketing
intern at paypal uk and from next month
i will start my full-time job which is
really exciting
as a senior product marketing at
gocardless uk based
a fintech scale up and of course happy
to take any questions
awesome thank you coral uh celine why
don't you go next
cool uh can you hear me yep
okay great so hi guys my name is celine
chen so i was originally from china
and i did my undergrad in the united
states california
and before joining lbs i was working for
keyword us
for about a year um and then um
after um so i was sorry i was
representing mim
2021 so after um lbs
i will be joining goldman sachs in hong
kong um as a summary intern for 2021.
yeah so feel free to ask any questions
you have regarding mim or
general questions regarding early
careers in london
awesome perfect thank you celine and
we'll round it out with me together
hi so uh i'm currently pursuing the
masters in analytics here at lbs
and before coming here i graduated with
a bachelor's in economics
i studied back in india and
here at lbs i'm also a part of the women
touch rugby club and the women in
business club
so if you have any questions regarding
that or
tech recruitment um yeah i'd be
happy to answer those
fantastic well thank you guys for all
being here um
and so i think we'll we'll start with a
couple
start with a couple questions here and
then it looks like already we've got
great engagement on the q a so let's
keep that going for sure
um so i think the first thing uh we
heard a little bit about your stories
which is awesome um but i'd love to know
and we'll go
same order as what we just did wha what
attracted you
to lbs when you were making your
decision
and we'll start with with chidi there
all right thank you
um i'll say the main thing was the fact
that it's in london so
london business school uh london is a
global city
i was born and raised in london so i
think i'm in a good position to to
share the benefits of living and
studying in london but apart from that
i've also seen what lbs has done with it
with this
cohort i've seen and heard of people
coming in twitching careers
and that's exactly what i wanted to do
and i thought look if there's any place
that i want to be
in london after after um my mba
so going to america or going elsewhere
would disrupt the network i'll be able
to build
but i'd have to come back um so being in
london
great city that it is but also my ideas
in terms of switching careers and
wanting to stay in london afterwards
and the lbs was a perfect fit for me and
i've heard great things of course about
the
social life student life um
you know getting involved those were
also secondary attributes as to why i
chose lbs
awesome chorale
what attracted you to lbs yeah actually
great points maybe i can just add
three three more things so first um
yeah so the program is two years program
of course you have some access points
with two year programs and i knew that
i want to have a full experience and it
has to be a two-year program i mean i
decided to invest in myself
to gain more skills knowledge and
connections and it just takes time
so two years is like a classic you know
time for
uh for doing the mba the second thing um
i believe it's more around the unique
program offering so apart from you know
courses that are the core of a business
school
there are some courses that are more
hands-on experience like
london cap and i'm sure that some of you
already um
read about about this unique um program
and i believe you know there's nothing
like a real client experience so
um that's really attracted me and the
last thing but definitely not least
um the diversity so studying with
500 students from 66 different countries
is a real
once in a lifetime experience you can
always find someone to share your ideas
and to start new things together
and i'm happy to share more more about
it later and but but
yeah the diversity is that it's a very
um
it's a huge thing here at lbs
i couldn't agree more couldn't agree
more it's such a driver of what
i think makes the program so special and
i think is consistent across
so many answers um celine do you have
anything to add on top of that that drew
you
um yeah for me i think there are two
major reasons why i choose lbs so the
first one is um i kind of want to
experience a culture
or want to try to live in a country
that's completely different from those
the one i've lived in because i've been
uh living in california
so i was in l.a for about five years so
i want to kind of like try a different
kind of
culture and life and have never been to
uk before so that's the first reason why
i choose
london business school and the second
reason is because
lbs i've studied um the
class profile before i apply to lbs and
i can see that the cohort itself
has students from really excellent
backgrounds
so i'm kind of really interested in
getting to know this kind of people
and also drawn to the different kind of
challenges that
the meme curriculum provided such as
london lab
as well as the gifts opportunity that we
can have to experience different
cultures
yeah toad totally agree totally agree
anita anything you want to add on top of
that um
i think completely agree with what
everyone said so far for me
uh it was the program itself first of
all because i come from
a non-tech background so a masters in
analytics was good to sort of pivot into
a more tech role
um and then london as a city itself
and this really strong network that
lbs has fostered over the years i think
these three were the main reasons
awesome
yeah i think there's actually a question
about your
pivot to tech i don't know i think
there's some that are going specific for
panelists i don't know if you guys have
um are able to type the answer
it's specific and i'll try and go for
some of the ones that have
broader questions like this one from ken
and i think it's a great question
um especially when we're talking about
social life at lbs
he said any any advice for introverts
who are coming in
um and i don't know whether if you're
you're not an introvert yourself or if
you have friends
and know how they coped um yeah i think
it's a great question so why don't i
start with
um why don't i start with nitia we'll go
backwards and in the reverse order there
yeah so i think the best advice i can
give is that
i mean you'll find all kinds of people
here at lbs so
don't necessarily have to be the most
extroverted person
um hair to you know make a few good
friends
so just reach out to a couple of people
before you come here to london
uh talk to them uh we did a couple of
zoom calls with our whole class even
before
any of us were in london so that really
hurt
also helps you find a few flatmates and
then um
i think every time you like go to
someone just like strike a conversation
you know
this is like the time you step out of
your comfort zone and
the more you do it the better you get at
it and like everyone here is
so friendly so approachable that i never
really faced a problem
or speaking to anyone
awesome awesome and we'll get um corel
why don't why don't we get your
perspective on this one too
yeah actually i mean i totally agree i
just feel like there are so many people
you can always find someone to just to
to be like your friend and to do you
know some some
some stuff that you feel more
comfortable with and
and yeah and basically we have
everything extroverts introverts like i
don't think it's
it's it's really like a problem you
don't have to be an extrovert in order
to pursue
an mba that's the bottom line yeah i
completely agree
i think i think because of how many
different people and types of people
there are here
you're just bound to find people who um
who
kind of get get the vibe and and the
other thing too is that there's so many
different
interests right and so even if you're an
introvert you know you're still
deeply interested in something and you
you'll go into
i don't know the board games club or
you're like that was something that i
love
i went into it and i was like oh wow
there's a whole host of people who also
love this thing
and get excited about it so i think
that's totally true
um there's actually one that it says
answered but i think it's a fantastic
one
um which is just how do you manage we're
hearing about
academics we're hearing about social how
do you manage to balance your time
between studying and participating in
all these great events
and i would like chidi to elaborate on
his answer there
which is get used to fomo which i
completely agree with but i think
double down on this one all right thank
you uh yeah
don't get used to promo uh phil's
missing out um
i mean when you start it's gonna be this
and that you know dragging in all
directions
come to this event come to this do this
let's travel here let's
meet up and you have all the academics
to sort out
and you do get this what i did i got the
sense that i was kind of missing out
on various things and you know oh gosh
people are going elsewhere
i think it's just understanding that you
probably won't be able to do
everything that's on offer and that's
okay that's okay it's just about
understanding
why you're starting your journey at lbs
whether that's
in early careers or whether that's an
mba why are you doing your
your degree at lbf apart from the
academics
um i would also strongly advise you to
think about the relationships that
you're making
these are relationships which will
probably last for a lifetime
and you have no idea how some of these
relationships will blossom in the next
10 to 20 years it may not be in the next
few years
but you know in 10 years time you you
know you'll realize that oh i was a
classmate with
so and so it's a great idea to come
aboard
um i think it's more about having that
sort of mindset and less about
trying to pack your day with many things
that i want to offer
because there's too much to do there is
too much to do um
it's just about having the right kind of
strategy so for me i went to in i said
look
um i was a doctor before i'm happy to do
academics but i don't want to be one of
those people that's
known for you know hiding away and
always buddying
so i really opened up back to the intro
to that question i was i tend to be
quiet
when i'm around new people um but one
thing that this really opened up for me
is that i
i just put myself out there i said you
know what i'm going to talk to people
that i haven't really met
i'm going to attend events initially a
little bit uncomfortable but as time
went on i opened up a lot more
i realized that it was actually actually
helpful to do that
i didn't want to leave the mba the
program and feel like oh gosh there were
all these people that i could have met
which i haven't yeah i think that's
something you have to consider
on the process yeah i completely agree
i think relationships for for at lbs are
just such a core part of it that
um i i think i prioritize that as well
when i got here too and i think there's
there's another question that kind of
feeds into this that i'm going to ask
celine and it's how do you strike
a balance between academics job hunting
school activities
and city exploration in the first term
um specifically for for early careers
and so i guess that's a little bit of
tying into this this whole this whole
point
yeah so i'd say the first time for early
careers is definitely the most stressful
time because that is when um the
recruiting season is at its peak
and people have to like get the
applications ready they have to write
review their cover letter review their
cv send out applications
prepare for video interviews get
assessments down
and at the same time study for the
finals for for lbs so i think
the ways try to prioritize the things
that you need to get done so for example
i think for early careers
maybe getting a job will be most
important
uh in term one comparing to like later
in term twenty three when you have a job
when you have an offer secured at that
time so the way is just to
try to prioritize like which one you
would
want to emphasize um in during term one
and i would say um the socialized
relationship things can be done together
with the city hunting
in london you can hang out with your
friends you can get to explore city
london together
and maybe like when you are when you
guys are really stressful about like
academic and
recruiting you can have a happy time
together
like on a friday or during weekend to
like relieve your stress
awesome yeah i think that's yeah for you
guys the first the first semester is
always uh
always a fun one for the for the ecs
nico do you want to add anything
to that on top yeah i just wanted to say
that
really depends on which kind of sectors
you're targeting for recruitment
so for example if you're not applying
for consulting roles
don't worry too much about you know not
securing a job offer in your first term
a lot of the tech recruitment takes
place in the second term itself
and a lot of my classmates have only now
started
uh applying so take so first term was
mostly you know focusing on
networking getting to like explore the
different industries
the different clubs at lbs and i think
yeah
totally depends on what you're looking
to get out of your degree
and uh the sectors you're targeting
yeah yeah the timelines are the
timelines are very different for the
different industries you get to know
you know where your head's at and how
that's going to line up too as planning
purposes
um i love this question and it's going
to go back to corral here um
about i think it's really cool to just
hear about how lbs is
i know chidi he talked about his pivot
um i'd love to know it's a great
question
how lbs helped you grow as an
entrepreneur
yeah i mean i would focus on two main
things
so the first one is the people so i got
really inspired by so many people
that were entrepreneurs before or are
looking to
to build something um in whatever sector
it is right
and and you can really learn from others
so
it's really really interesting to get in
touch with people
and to just understand the way they
think the way they see things
and and where where where is
where where is basically um
what's their goal or where do they see
themselves in like five years from now
and the second thing is many classes
that we have here at lbs
um so many classes that are part of the
of the entrepreneurship category and
and you can learn from you know from top
professors or some
external a professor that does just give
a talk
and you can always follow up with some
questions and you can actually
learn all the time all the time you can
learn new things and then think what you
want to do
and and and how does it help you to
achieve your
short and long-term career goal these
are the main things i think
yeah i think that's it's that the
coming in with the goals but also having
the open mind and trying to take
take advantage of all the resources that
you have it's it's so key
yeah and maybe maybe i will add just one
one little thing
my personal experience so i shared
before that i established my
my first company it was six years ago i
was really young
like in terms of i really i didn't
really know like anything about you know
the business world and how to build a
company how to
erase money and and how to how to
to get more customers and i feel like
that
all the core classes here at lbs
were really really good so for the first
time i
i actually um i actually managed to
um to learn from like from
those like very important uh
classes about about everything related
to business
um so it's really really cool and if you
didn't take you know business classes
when you in your undergrad i think it's
a great opportunity to learn
all the basic things about business
yeah no it's it's cool because then you
you learn it in the classroom and then
for you you were pretty much immediately
putting it into practice which is super
neat
um totally agree yeah that's that's no i
think
i think it's really cool to hear
people's journeys at lbs and how
not only the academics but the clubs and
everything can can kind of be such an
anchor for
for building your short term and your
long-term goals there um
i think there's one that was
quote-unquote answered but i still like
it because i think
it's very topical for those who are
coming into um the program
and was definitely something i was
asking myself and my my my peers when i
wanted to go in what are some of the
things
that the admits can do before august to
prepare
to make the most of their time at lbs i
think chidi's gone and answered here
i said find the group chat and make sure
that you're you're kind of starting to
talk which i completely agree with but
is there anything else that that people
would add here
um and i'll i'll start with maybe nikia
do you want to see see if there's
anything you'd add
um so i think um one thing that i really
kind of regret not doing earlier but
also it wasn't possible for me because i
graduated in august
2020 and came here to london like
after a week um so one thing is
like just network and talk to a lot of
people who are already at
lbs or are alumni identify the kind of
companies you're trying to target and
try to reach out to people in those
companies and talk to them to get a
sense of
uh what are the different kind of roles
um you might want to look at etc because
uh once you're here you will be you know
really busy with a lot of things
and it at times it becomes difficult to
prioritize
um a few things so that's one
uh area you can prep for a way in
advance even before you
come here to london yeah
totally agree with that and uh celine
would you add anything
from your end oh sorry
would you mind repeat a question again
because yeah yeah of course yes
q a session yeah yeah no problem it's
it's i
i know we're going text and we're going
live as well so it's it's
would what advice i guess would you give
um the admits uh for what they can do
in advance of august to prepare for
their time at obs yeah
um yeah i think it depends on which
career session
like section you are interested in for
applying
um i think in terms of banking and
finance it started way earlier than
consulting
uh especially for like apac it starts
even earlier than um the email region
so i'd say before um starting with lbs
maybe try to have your
cv and cover letter letter ready at
least like draft
already and um also maybe get prepared
for the
video assessments you can find some
questions that being asked previously
you can try to prepare for those
so that when you are actually starting
with lbs
you can be less stressful about
everything that's going on at the same
time
yeah no that's uh i think yeah any
anything that you can do in
advance especially if you're going for
those early recruiting uh is always
helpful to free up some time
i guess flipping to the nba perspective
um chidi do you have anything to add on
top of your
kind of go to the facebook groups make
sure you're chatting
um yeah i think i mean things will
probably change man but from my
experience from our side
i remember that someone set up a
facebook group and
we kind of searched and we kind of
edited ourselves perhaps facebook is
best useful these days
but there will be a group out there
where you know there's a group of people
that are gathering and they're trying to
make something if you can you can start
it yourself that's how i met
many of the people on the course that i
that i now know as friends today
um with those kind of initial gatherings
i remember there was an excel
spreadsheet going around about housing
we're trying to get together with
housing to sort out who would live with
who
um you're more academically inclined
and you're coming from a non-traditional
background you can obviously
brush up on accounting or economics and
finance just to
you know lessen the the force of that
blow when you start
for me it was quite a big blows and it
was like oh this is all
very new to me um
but if you can get to if things open up
and you can get to london that's really
good
best way to catch up and meet with
people um
people organized a few trips as well
before starting there were few travel
trips that were overnight
before people started as well so these
are all the various ways in which you
kind of start those bonds start the
journey
before officially starting in august
yeah no i think that's there's that
getting
getting ahead of getting ahead of the
academics and getting ahead of the
meeting people was
was definitely stuff that i tried to to
do while i was while i was
ramping up for my entry into to the
program and corral is there any last
things that you would add or
yeah um take a rest sleep well
you're going to have you're not gonna
sleep
for two years you're gonna have no i and
and actually like honestly get get
excited like
just try to get really excited you're
gonna have the best
best best experience ever and and you
want to make the most out of it right so
just
relax take a deep breath and sleep well
say bye bye to your friends from home
family and just
engage with this
unbelievable experience i could not have
said it better
i could not have said it better the lbs
journey is uh
is a long road it's a winding road it's
an exciting one so
i think yeah resting up and getting
really really pumped for it and getting
yourself in the right headspace is such
a
such a good tip such a good tip um
and yeah so i think there was another
one uh around
the alumni community that i think is is
an interesting question so you know
um there's obviously we talked about you
know 45 000 alumni
around the world uh what experiences do
you guys have
engaging with the alumni community here
and i think someone
someone answered in the chat
um here so we'll start yeah celine i
think you said you know electives and
peer leader sessions so why don't we
start with a bit of a
an elaboration on that and we can move
around
yeah i think i kind of misunderstood the
question if it's asking about along then
it's different because like i'm talking
about like connections with
mbas and the mbas um i think regarding
alums
um i think the first i think the first
connection you have with along will be
your interview
with lbs i think most of it will be done
through
a nlps along around the world and
um also because my academic year is a
bit different
it's all like zoom based and virtual
things so it kind of makes our
networking a bit hard compared to normal
times
but you can still reach out to alarm
through linking for example like before
my interviews i was trying to like
search
for alum from lbs was working on a
company before my interview
that's really helpful especially to
prepare for questions like
um why do you want to work for that
company things like that
um so i think linking is really useful
especially under the pandemic season and
besides that i think
connection over connection such as like
one of your friends know
obvious alarms also a good way to find a
connection that you can reach out
to
yeah no definitely i think that it's
cool that they've got this
platform where you can go and search for
four different industries and i think
that's a really engaging way to kind of
target your
your alumni searches as you were saying
celine um
corel anything that you wanna you add to
the alumni engagement
yeah sure so first of all i totally
agree i mean
with all the things and i just want to
add that um
i think we have a very strong community
and
it this is one of the most important
things when you choose
the mba program and i think we have a
very strong
um alumni community where you can always
reach out
and ask for help and and i can share
from my personal experience that i got
few referrals
by some of the of the alumni for
different roles
um and it's it's extremely helpful you
know and they don't have to do it but we
are part of the same community
and of course i'm going to pay it
forward as well um
so i really appreciate that fact and
yeah
and and it's really really cool
yeah no i think i i have an experience
of we
i was working for a startup and i needed
to figure out
how to do some international supply
chain um
and i honestly just posted on a portal
on the lbs network alumni portal and
said
hey does anyone have expertise or
contacts in this space
and it felt like you're sending a
message out
into the ether and and it came back with
like 10 responses people yeah of course
i've got experience in this yeah happy
to chat
it's just such an engaged and active
community and so it's one of those ask
and you shall receive and
until you do ask you just you kind of
think of it as this
oh yeah the alumni community but it's
there it's present
and it's it's ready for you to reach out
which is really really cool um
i don't know if uh chidi or anitia if
either of you guys have have something
you want to add on the
alumni
well i think yeah you couldn't have like
said it better
um as an early career it's been really
easy for me to you know reach out to
people on linkedin and
everyone is just so willing to help hop
on coffee chats quick calls to
you know discuss what you're thinking
discuss
any like doubts or ambitions if you had
and i've had like alumni's
offer you know like referrals and stuff
so all that's been really helpful so far
awesome awesome so i i think we're
almost
we've gone probably about 30 minutes we
probably have one or two more questions
here
um i see in the chat we've got something
about
for students who are sponsored by an
employer so i can i can answer that one
um at the tail end of the session but
then
i think another question about
entrepreneurship is there an active
search fund community among the nba
cohort
i don't know if corral or chidi you're
plugged into that
no i know one one yeah i mean you know
just one one friend of mine
who has just started a search fund which
is really really cool and i know that
she reached out to some alumni
and they and they helped her they helped
her to um
to start it um i have like nothing to
share more than that i just know that
she's really excited about it it's very
common uh
post mba and i'm not sure who
who posted this question but i'm happy
to connect later
yeah i have a similar exposure to the
topic i have a friend
who worked with alumni so it's it's
definitely a growing space here at lbs
um there is a community there's people
who are doing it every year
and there's contacts that you can reach
out to who are alumni so
i think that's that's what i'd say about
the search fund topic and you know what
let's end on
let's end on a a broader question we'll
go across the board again
we'll get answers from everyone um
what's been the best thing for you guys
about living in london we talk about
london and lbs and how close they are
um chidi i know you picked it because of
it was london so why don't we start with
you
um and and then i'd just love to hear
from you guys about what's the best
thing about living in london
say it's the variety of things you can
do so
london is truly a metropolitan city um
everything
everything you need potentially will be
here it's a very well connected city in
terms of travel
i would say probably the best thing is
just the variety of things you can do
that's because it's a welcoming city um
people of all creed the whole
backgrounds of all faiths and none
um everyone everyone is welcome in
london
and and you feel it you know you walk
around you you travel you go to
different events and you start to
realize that
you know outside of london very
different experience
so that's what i would say variety of
things you can do anything you really
want to do
a 24-hour city i think that's very
difficult to find
around the world so you can literally go
up and down anywhere relatively safely
across all times of the day
and truly find anything you wish to do
totally totally corral what would you
say for this one
yeah i mean first of all i love london i
love love love
such a great and fun city and i think
there are many great things about living
in london it's really hard to choose
only one
and i think that yeah london is a very
diverse city and i think that the most
common question here is
where are you from which is really
interesting and
and but having said that i mean you
never feel like foreign simply because
most
people here are not originally from
london which is
great and apart from that um london is a
hub for many
big corporates and i feel like
everything happens here and there are so
many opportunities and i found it really
exciting
it's not like like a random city you can
really find
many opportunities here and maybe just
to add one more thing
um lbs is part of the london community
not only um um geographically but
also in terms of the involvement and
activities of lbs in
in london communities so before covered
it was very easy for example for
external speakers to come
or companies just to come over to give a
talk or presentation so it's it's a huge
advantage i mean that's something that
you obviously cannot do if you
if you study in them
not in a big city and yeah these are
my things and i'm going to quickly add
on to that let's just go
to that with what corral said yeah it's
the
all the employers when they when they're
around they come to
to come to london obviously they're
mostly based in london
so also lbs will attract many big names
i think one of the biggest things we've
had is stephen schwartzman
um he came on campus last towards the
end of 2019
to give a speech and you know it was
just billionaire walking around on
campus
and we were you know i don't think
that's a privilege that many other
schools
could really enjoy or any schools
outside of london could enjoy for
example
yeah totally agree the the embedded
nature of lbs is amazing in the london
community for sure
um celine what would you add to that
i would say um to add on g
and growl the best thing in london for
me would be the different
parks that london has especially uh the
region's park
back at lps it sort of gave a
great opportunity especially during
pandemic when everything's locked down
that gave us basically a place for us to
hang out
and to have a walk to do a bit of
exercise
during our free time and also it's
really pretty during the spring time
when all the flowers start to bloom
yeah i love the london parks it's a very
coveted answer but i also love the
london parks even non-covered times i
was exploring them for sure
hampstead heath regents park hyde park
they're everywhere they're and they're
built into the city too which is so fun
so like you can walk from
a really busy neighborhood into a park
and it feels like you're just crossing
the street
love that um why don't you why don't you
finish this off
i think everyone's covered pretty much
everything but yes i think
uh given that we were in a uh lockdown
and everything the parks and the walks
definitely became
um the highlight and london is just so
diverse
that you know you're walking in one
street and then you walk like another
half a kilometer and the area the
neighborhood looks completely different
feels completely different
so there's definitely a lot worth
exploring
and uh yeah like restaurants opened up
this week and i felt like london was you
know like a busy city again
um so people who are coming in uh next
year would definitely
get to enjoy that
yeah i can couldn't agree more it's uh
it's one of those lively things and
you're starting to feel like come back
to life again which is
just so so nice um amazing well
i think there's a couple things that i
can just rattle off in the q a
um for sponsored students my advice for
getting the most out of the opportunity
is get involved um the best way that you
can really
you know take advantage of it is to try
new things to get involved in the clubs
to meet a bunch of people
um you know that was kind of how i threw
myself into it
uh academics was always a steady thing
going along but my main thing was just
really getting to know everyone in the
program and so i'd
say you know sponsored students um
having a unique opportunity they're less
focused on
recruiting naturally or they are focused
on recruiting if they're looking to
explore
um everyone's got their own journey but
with that time
you know you can really dig into some of
these clubs and dig into these events
and
uh hence my involvement in the student
association and running an event like
this
um you know is something that you can
really get to do and
and drive forward as an initiative and
then budget options for exploring london
to be quite honest if
i i take like this place is a tube
driven public transport driven city it's
faster
and cheaper to take tubes than it is to
take the uber like you look at your map
and you you realize that it's so to get
around london
i mean it's a walking city when you're
in the core of it it's a tube city when
you're trying to explore outer regions
and uh to celine's point i feel like
this whole year we were just doing parks
picnics
that type of stuff so it's one of those
cities where it's got something for
everyone
um and it's it's pretty easy to get
around and explore so
i would highly recommend as soon as you
get into the marla bone bubble which is
something that very well may happen or
or maybe you live elsewhere but that you
try and get across the city because it's
got so many different pockets that are
so fun to explore
um and with that i'm going to flip over
to a career presentation but before i do
that just to intro the career fair
before i do that can we give a warm
round of applause
for our panelists thank you guys so much
for coming and sharing your thoughts it
was a lot of fun to have you guys here
and talk about lbs every time i do it
gets me really hyped
about um the journey that we all went on
and and the city that we all live in so
thank you thank you all of you for
joining
awesome um so let me just quickly put up
a
few slides here um
to finish it off so
the last thing or the next thing that
we're going to move into is the career
session
um so i'll do a bit of an intro
on the career journey and then would
love to
give you guys a bit of a break because i
know we've got maybe some zoom fatigue
going on
so that you guys can go grab a coffee
and then we'll kick over to the career
fair
at 1 15. so careers at lbs is obviously
core one of the main reasons why people
come
to a business school or an early career
program
is uh is to find their next role and so
i think that
you know moving uh moving forward
the career sections will give you a
little bit of a flavor about how the
different industries
recruit but there's so many different
support systems at lbs
for for the for finding your your career
and for
for finding the job that you want to do
after lbs
there's the career center which is
something i'll talk about in the next
slide
we have so many alumni networks as we
were just talking about in the q a
there's projects that get you embedded
into the london community like london
cap
there's global business experiences
which allow you to go on
uh treks that focus on specific
industries there's obviously this
industry-specific clubs there's talks
lectures there's
so many resources that you guys can
access um to really start to
learn and discover about what you want
to do if that's not something that
you're sure about
and then hone in and really explore once
you've figured that out
the career center is at the core of it
all
so the career center is always there
hosting sessions and providing resources
the school does a fantastic job of
having one-on-one sessions so that you
can really
dig into what you want career in
professional development sessions so
if you want to develop a skill set in a
certain area both clubs and the career
center
offer this um so i know there's some
modeling sessions that go in there's
some public speaking sessions
it's really really great and then
there's a whole host
of career and networking opportunities
so firms come on campus
um through the career center and through
clubs and really kind of try and
showcase their their best self and then
you guys get access to all of that
so it's really you know it's a really
great resource as
as far as finding the next job and
there's three types of one-on-one
support
um this uh this is open from september
16th we're hoping
that's probably still the date where all
this will be will be working but
um you've got coaches you've got sector
specialists and you've got peer leaders
so coaches are this
kind of impartial place for you to
really discover
what you want to your career to be i use
this actually
at the beginning even as a sponsored
consultant where i knew i was probably
going back
just to really figure out what uh what i
wanted to do with my two years and what
i wanted to
to get out of my career journey even
knowing that i'm going back to the same
role
sector specialists is great once you've
figured out that kind of exploration in
that journey they've got tons of
detailed information
about doing certain um doing certain
roles in certain industries
and so you can really leverage this when
you get on campus and the career center
walks you through all of this in an
intro session once you arrive
and then peer leaders is fantastic way
for second years
um to kind of help out and and use their
expertise
from either a previous role before they
join the program or the one that they
recruited into
there's a lot of support that goes
across the classes that you can access
oh with that being said i'm about a
minute away before the break
which is not bad on timing we have a 15
minute break we're going to flip back to
the meeting style
uh link that we had beforehand so grab a
coffee
um you know stretch your legs walk
around the flat
wherever you're located and then if you
join us back at 1
15 we'll do a breakout style session
again
where we'll have the consulting and the
retail and luxury um
clubs come in and and host that first
one we'll have a five minute break
we'll move into banking private equity
and venture capital and diversified
which which has some representation from
energy and social impact
um and then the third one is more for
kind of tech and media
startups and entrepreneurship so go grab
that break
grab that refreshment and we'll see you
guys back on the other link in
15 minutes thanks everyone

### Social Impact Club @ The Clubs Fair - 17 April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOqe6xSm_QU

Idioma: en

okay great um we'll get started here so
i'm
katie i'm an mba 2022
um i'm american and right now i'm chief
of staff of the social impact club
um which is about a 60-person leadership
team but then like a 2500 person
club on campus because you can stay a
member as you graduate and so we have
alumni
et cetera and next year i will be one of
the co-presidents of the social impact
club at lbs
so we're super excited my co-president
is rock climbing right now
um so i'm the lucky person getting to
talk to you
as new admits and i have a deck
i'll go through that quickly let me see
if i
can pull that up just to give you a bit
of a
flavor as to what the social impact club
is all about
i'm so excited to see so many of you in
this room i
i of course think it's the best club on
campus um
so a little bit about the club so social
impact
as many of you might already know about
at lbs
when you think of lbs it's not the most
social impact branded school not
something like an oxford saeed which i
also applied for and was really excited
about
given my background which for me was
working in non-profit so doing advocacy
around certain policy issues and then
working in u.s government before that
i'm from washington dc originally so
i came to lbs with no business
experience background
but just wanted to come and be exposed
to
learning more about how to lever finance
for good so i think whether that's
impact investing blended finance that's
what i particularly wanted to learn
about
um but then just explore from the
business side of things how
you can leverage it to be a force for
good just given that
i think with the way the private sector
works you kind of have the
scale and speed of impact that i would
want to have in my future career
um so that's what i came to lbs to do
and to go back to what i was saying is
you know when you think of lbs
it's an amazing brand name to have on
your cv
it's a fantastic network um super
established
uh here in london but then with its
reputation abroad but again
i at first when applying was a little
dubious about it because i was like that
doesn't have
the you know spot like kind of brand
around social impact without a school
like oxford said or berkeley or
wharton might more so however i've
really
loved coming here and experiencing
and kind of building my own experience
with social impact in a different way
just because lbs by nature of
the super diverse student body and the
amazing faculty and a lot of the
student-led
opportunities here you i think get a
richer exposure to you know
a network that you can build that you
can use to influence
you know as you go on in your career but
then also you get really
strong and kind of the foundations of
finance
you know consulting type skills which i
think serve you well wherever you go so
i think
this is a great place to come if you
want to become really
strong in the foundations of your kind
of business fundamentals but then also
build your network with people
who are going into finance going into
consulting going into entrepreneurship
because
that will be who you can influence as
you move on in your career
etc so to get a bit more into the
nitty-gritty of like social impact at
lbs
at academically there are definitely
classes here a lot of them around
innovation um that relate to
social impact um some of those are
electives so typically you would be able
to start taking those
within like the spring summer semesters
of your first
year and then into your second year when
um your schedule gets freed up quite a
lot in terms of
you're not required to take any um
core courses at that point so you're
taking almost all electives
um careers this is a really growing
space within lbs in terms of
support from the school i think they're
still learning
about what social impact means in terms
of recruitment
and that typically falls within
unstructured recruiting
which can be a little nerve-wracking
when
other peers in your cohort are maybe
going through consulting or investment
banking and have their internship
opportunities lined up already
but there's an amazing support system
especially within the club if you're
wanting to do social impact as an
internship and explore it
um and we have our own careers pillar
within the club that also offers a lot
of
help and resources with that and then in
terms of extracurriculars
this is also something that i've been
really excited about because i think
at lbs you really even being here for a
few months have seen like a step
change in how students are talking about
sustainability social impact
etc and wanting to see more and more of
it um
in their experience at lbs and this i
think comes across
most in the extracurricular
opportunities so of course there's this
club
but all other clubs almost have an
element of social impact so
you know whether it's women in business
entrepreneurship
family business energy etc
youth and i mean even to talk about
impact investing private equity venture
capital and stuff
everyone is talking about this because
not only
i think does like our peer group
does this matter a lot more in terms of
like how we approach our careers etc but
then
also with um
how corporates are recruiting and
thinking about their own strategies in
the future they're understanding that
they need to be more
impact focused sustainability-led in
order
to be sustainable and competitive just
as
the world kind of has changed since 20
30 years ago clearly and
this is the way forward so i won't go
too much into this in terms of vision
mission strategy etc but
just to touch on the bottom i i would
say with the club at least you know what
we're looking for
is building a community amongst each
other so
it's really nice to have a place at lbs
where you can come and
feel like you are with like-minded
people or at least people
whose you know kind of values and what
they're looking for in a career overlap
with your own and
it is good to have that given there are
so many people pursuing much more
structured opportunities at the school
um but then also just getting to work
with faculty
and some of the institutes here and
being exposed to really
um amazing professors doing great work
or who have had great careers
um and again just with the lbs brand
name you're able to get quite a few
speakers
coming in through the club that you get
to learn and network with
as well um and then in terms of the club
structure itself
and we've grown quite a lot in the last
few years so it's quite an
entrepreneurial kind of flat
organization which i really like culture
wise
um so with that it's a place where if
you come in and you're passionate about
an aspect of social impact and it's such
a huge umbrella so much
fits under it regardless or needless to
say there's i'm sure
going to be something within the club
that you will be excited about
but there's also a lot of room and scope
for you to take ownership and really run
with things
and make you know it what it is so if
you really are excited about you know
plant-based proteins and the future of
food
um you can craft like a speaker series
around that
etc even if that's not built in you know
specifically
within the social impact club um
leadership itself uh i did want to point
out that the one thing we
are probably known for most is our
annual social impact week
which happens typically in march and the
last few years it just gets bigger and
bigger
and this last march we had it and it was
virtual given the
lockdown restrictions and it was
fantastic we had two days of speakers
and the theme was reinventing the
mainstream
and then three days of only events for
lbs students and that was really cool
and so rich in terms of content and
workshops and also we had
employers coming and were able to do
small coffee chats with them and
networking series so a really like
tactical
um and useful way to end the week
so that's it colleen and tina they are
graduating this year and they are the
current presidents but i would love to
answer any questions you have about the
club or social impact
at lbs i know i probably spoke longer
than i
meant to but anyone feel free to just
jump in and come off of me
any burning questions i mean i see we
have 40 people here
so i know someone's got to have a
question melissa
yes i think thanks for your time
um i'm actually really interested in the
mint competition and my question is
i saw that there it said there are eight
exco team members so those are the team
members organizing the mint competition
or are they
actively participating like pitching the
yeah
great question so i'll also say impact
investing at lbs
super sexy like everyone wants to be in
impact investing in some way and i would
say out of you know
the students who come to lbs and are
interested in social impact in one way
or another about
30 percent want to get into impact
investing so there's a
large chunk if not the largest chunk who
want to get into that
and the men competition for those who
might not know about it
it's an mba global competition that was
started
at wharton um and with i think bridges
fund capital management and it's really
cool they
have this program that consists of core
modules so you kind of go through these
uh
mini courses on how to be an impact
investor and then the tactical
application of that
is you working within a small team of
other students source your own
startups that are having some impact in
the world and
you eventually choose one to do a due
diligence process
and pitch to an investment committee and
mba
programs all over the world do this it's
a super prestigious program
and really well known so to go back to
your question
melissa um specifically about the club
xco there is a specific pillar of the
club that's dedicated to running the
mint program
but what's also cool is it's the same
pillar that is also responsible
for the lbs sif which is the student
impact investment fund which is
different from mint
but it's an lbs fund where students get
to research decide along with a few
other advisors to the fund small
investments that they want to make
so if you're interested in impact
investing and really want hands-on like
close experience of how
to do that it's a great place within the
club in order to get exposure to it but
for example i went through the mint
program this year loved it you learn so
much
and so that is also a great opportunity
and
there's really no barrier to that you
just sign up with four
other students and in a team of five you
can go through the mint
process during the year does that answer
your question
yes so if you're part of this pillar
then you wouldn't be
like competing in a team of four members
right
exactly exactly you would be
facilitating whereas you can
separately sign up with a team of five
okay got that and just uh a follow-up
question are there
um i've i've just heard that there are
these junior exco
positions because i am a myth and i am
you know the program is shorter than the
nba so
how is that organized yes i'm so glad
you asked so
as one of the co-presidents basically
this year
anyone who is staying so it's really
usually mbas because they're in a
two-year program
um we'll have applications and decide on
who the senior exco members are and
those are the pillar leads so kind of
like the vice president
type rule and then next year when
new students come in whether it's miff
emba
mba you can apply for the junior exco
positions and
it's only a one year commitment so even
if you're a myth
we would love to have you because i
think that's something also we really
enjoy with the social impact club is
it's quite diverse in terms of students
from
across the lbs programs and we have some
of our most
engaged members who are miffs or early
careers so would definitely encourage
that
okay thank you oh all right i think i
saw chelsea's hand up
next you want to go ahead
hello hi hi hi greeting from singapore
oh wow hello um
i am uh mfa admit
so my question is so in terms of um
impact investing or generally any kind
of
investing um that has uh in
that incorporate esg considerations be
it the public market
or or or you say as
uh investment in social ventures as in
be
the broader definition of impact
investing or the
other narrower definition also impact
investing
might know what are the um
opportunities for mfa students
do we need to have pre uh experiences
like like your rich experience with the
government
or are we able to
get into it uh upon uh graduating from
mfa
a second question is which is linked to
it if so what are the institutions to
apply
for thanks okay good question
um i'll try and keep the short because
i'm sure i couldn't speak at length
so your question about coming in as an
mfa
and kind of what you can do while you're
here at school and then also
graduate opportunities definitely to
start with the first part
i'm not sure if mfas can also do men i
think they are but i'd be happy to
follow up and drop you a note later
um just to confirm but there are a lot
of different
um ways to be exposed to impact
investing at lbs and i'll say
you know we do have career center
resources there's a woman named lucy
greenwood who's dedicated to impact
investing and
she's very much on the investment side
and finance side so she would be a great
resource for you
um but then also through student clubs
they
will have different tracks organized and
this last year
they again have been virtual but for
example in the fall i joined an impact
investing trek
that was focused on europe but they also
did one
that was in partnership with oxford
saeed school and was focused on
impact investing in south asia which is
really exciting
and so for that you meet with different
firms and that i mean there's a huge
umbrella because you have private equity
you know impact focus vc funds
you have dfi excuse me like cdc here in
the uk
so there's really a huge span um so i
would also say
just to be on the lookout for club
opportunities such as you know attract
but then also
like the private equity club runs a lot
of workshops that are super helpful and
you can get exposure to you know
building financial models and emerging
markets
um there are a lot of speakers
throughout the year who talk about
esg in investing and you know the danger
of greenwashing etc it's a topic that
comes up a lot so i think there's a lot
of practical ways you can kind of build
your experience around that and get your
hands into it um
during your program and then afterwards
i think
you know again i i'm not sure
you know just to i guess the places that
come to mind that a lot of people
recruit to our cdc the development
finance institution here in the uk
bridges fund management
a few others acumen 60 decibels it also
depends on if you want to go
into the impact side of things but i
think with your background and doing an
mfa you probably want to stick to
the financial and investment side

### Tech & Media Club @ The Careers Fair - 16 Arpil 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi9JeyO8A_0

Idioma: en

all right
shall we kick off that's good critical
mass
thanks everyone uh for joining uh this
afternoon um congratulations again
um on on your offers at lbs um great to
be here with you
to talk about technology and media at
the school
from a career perspective um as we
covered sort of the tech and media club
earlier on
uh today as well um so uh as
a quick introduction uh i'm gary in nba
2021 so just about
uh to graduate um uh this second year
so i was the co-president for the tech
and media club um but also
um i sit uh on sort of the school's
governing board looking at
technology and media careers and
education so
a lot of what we've been doing over the
last 18 months uh during my time with
the school is working with them
to really pivot the school towards tech
and media and
a whole host of initiatives across uh
degree education
um that encompasses that uh that we'll
go through uh this afternoon
um on a personal level um pre-mba i used
to work in
uh investment banking um for five years
then joined
lbs did a couple of internships at
american express um
over the summer last year more within
fintech and then in the startup space
uh called digital boost which was a
startup founded with
bcg digital ventures and google and then
post mba actually as of uh in two weeks
um i
start my post nba role uh in the media
space um
working for sky and comcast leading
their strategy um
for streaming services within product
management as well
and i'm joined by connor so go go for it
connor thanks dave
hi everyone i'm a classmate of gears in
the nba 2021
uh originally from canada where i worked
as a consultant prior to lbs
i then uh in my time at lbs
made a switch and did my summer
internship in tech working for amazon
which i'll talk
a little bit more about later uh and i'm
really excited to
to share what that journey could look
like for each of you
great so uh if we start off um with a
more sort of holistic picture so
lbs is really pivoting through more tech
focused uh business schools so typically
we've had students go into more banking
and
consulting more and more we see actually
that folks are going into technology so
about half
our class in nba 2021 are entering into
the tech sector so and that really
covers
a whole area of themes from academics
the career center student-led
initiatives
and the alumni space so on the academic
side
last year i was working with the school
to introduce technology and analytics
mba concentration
that opened up courses across key areas
in technology such as product management
marketing analytics aia ml
deep tech fintech digital strategy and
embedded that into the mba program
and um from this year we offer sort of
sql python table and excel embedded
within sort of the degree
education as well across all the
programs
within the career center a whole aspect
a whole area of lbs
with our attack and media careers team
that i work closely with
is really focus on things like career
fairs um all the way ranging from like
big tech like amazon who
is literally our top employer um uh all
the way down to sort of
startups as well really covering
on-campus recruiting
more individual mentoring sector
specific advice and prep so
and this ranges from sort of firm
specific prep to like how to ace like an
amazon interview
to sort of verticals prep such as how to
how to ace an interview in product
management
we also run a peer leader program where
second year students mentor first year
students
um for sort of the technology and media
space as well as cover
those global sort of industry
partnerships student-led won't go into
too much detail but that's covered in
sort of the tech and media club sessions
um that happened earlier on today and
will happen tomorrow but a lot of this
also stems throughout that student
journey into the alumni space as well
we have a huge range of alumni globally
across the tech sector and they get
involved in various things like
mentorship and networking
we interact with them a lot on regional
events and tracks out to industry
um as well as bring them back onto
campus and to talk about
their experiences and projects as well
so really across
that entire spectrum of that student
journey really pivoting the school to be
more
technology focused and conor is going to
go through some of these opportunities
for you now as gary mentioned
amazon is one of our top employers but
they are certainly not the only one in
the tech space
and what i want to call your attention
to here is there's
you know perhaps some really expected
brand names that you're seeing up here
you know your amazons your facebooks a
lot of our big fintech
players because london is such a
financial services hub
you know your mastercard your american
express as well some of the smaller ones
like airwallets
but if if you look to the kind of right
side you will see the absolute breadth
of companies that do hire at lbs
and these cut across every type
of industry vertical that you could
think of whether that's energy
uh security or even i think there's some
uh great work that we've done with
public which is in the public sector
space so really if you do have an
interest in in any career vertical or
you're coming from a sector
but aren't sure how to make a transition
into kind of a more tech
firm know that there is likely a company
for you
and they have likely hired from lbs
uh but for those who are perhaps a bit
newer to the technology space you may be
curious as to what
you do at some of these companies and
secure if you wouldn't mind
there are some roles that are very
specific to tech
and i think the first one that people
think of is you know that core product
manager role
or in a similar capacity they have that
product marketing manager
and absolutely many people do choose to
go
into those types of roles but that's not
necessarily the only way in
so you'll see a lot of people leveraging
some of their past experience whether
that's in
sales and business development or in
kind of the more core operational
strategy functions to help transition
into the tech space
that being said i think it can really
help you understand what type of company
you want to work for
based off of the type of role you're
interested in if you are interested in a
product manager role but you don't
necessarily come from a technical
background
know that that will predispose you to
working at certain companies rather than
others
companies that allow for people with
less technical experience
you may not get hired at google right
away but that doesn't mean it can't be
your second step
as you go through internships building
your skills
as part of your career journey and if we
kind of take a double click on a few of
these roles
know that your experience even if it is
perhaps
to you seemingly completely unrelated to
these fields
there are a lot of crossovers i myself
was a consultant who found myself in
product management
uh and if you'd asked me on day one what
relevant skills i would have i had i
would have said none
because i didn't take the time to really
understand the job
prior to recruiting definitely
understand before you recruit
um but so really take stock of the
skills that you do have
if you have any type of experience in
the tech sector that's great but this is
by no means a requirement and
as i mentioned earlier there's so much
you can do within the tech sector
so perhaps if you've kind of considered
a career in marketing but aren't
necessarily
tied to a particular sector i would
encourage you to look at a product
marketing role
where you can really leverage the kind
of more analytic focus
of a lot of these startups and leverage
your kind of customer centricity that
you've perhaps developed in the past
and if you're really really not sure and
consider yourself more of a generalist
maybe consider bizops
it's kind of that bread and butter what
you'll learn
through your strong business acumen that
can be supported through the mba
and can help you position you to be a
strategic advisor and achieve a staff
type role
or leading a particular part or aspect
of the business
and supporting people who come from a
more technical background
so a lot we can go into any more detail
on that during questions but just to
give you a little sampling of what
people
like to do in their in their jobs
right so if we look at sort of how this
all comes together um
at lbs and this is really something that
uh kicked off over the last sort of two
years
where we work across sort of degree
education the career center
the uh student-led side the tech media
club as well as really looking at
the alumni partnerships uh and mentoring
um a lot of what we've done
is to really uh focus on sort of the
degree programs and
embed technical skills um and employable
skills within
degree education so the technology and
analytics mba
essentially opens up a whole broad range
of electives
across the key areas that will prepare
you for roles and products business
development robs strategy and ops
all of these types of roles and give you
that academic
grounding um to pivot into that sector
um
skill sessions as i mentioned sort of in
python sql and tableau peppered
throughout sort of
the the degree programs as well as a
huge range of electives covering
key topics in technology so not only
products but things
um like a new course focused on digital
consulting
courses along customer and marketing
analytics and various
uh analogous areas that will really help
you um pivot into
the tech sector as well a lot of what we
do is business development um
linking really students faculty and
industry together not only well
you guys are students but also alumni as
well
and driving really both the research
angle
of the school and when we look at
technology as well as the career
component a lot of
what we do is alumni driven as i'm sure
you know
when you applied for lbs um and a lot of
what we do is really bringing alumni
back
onto campus and this is really all
coordinated um centrally through the
school and it's a really exciting time
to join lbs and really focus on
technology from sort of a london tech
ecosystem scene
we see a lot of traction within um
technology and media
and a lot of what we're doing at the
school is really leveraging
that and and positioning the school um
as an employer of choice uh
for tech and media um careers
so that slides a six out of six um so
uh obviously like we're happy to open it
up for questions uh i think you guys
should just be able to sort of unmute
yourself um or raise hands possibly i'm
not sure
um but yeah go ahead and if there's any
sort of questions you have
on tech and media careers the education
side
our sort of student journey um feel free
to let us know
you guys should be able to unmute i
think
stunned silence love it tell them
okay thanks a lot for the presentation
i'm wondering do you have any advice for
us um on what to do to prepare
um typically into tech pre-mba
honestly i think um you know uh and
actually i talked to a lot of nba 2023
and sort of students about this or
incoming into the program honestly the
first thing to do is really
take a break before you join the school
like it's going to really kick off
in august like seriously it's going to
kick off and you'll find that you have
so many resources
not only from the school but your peers
as well and that will really give you
all you need to sort of pivot from one
industry to the other
not only just tech actually um any sort
of combination of industries
um i think uh it's really important to
actually be energized for that autumn
term
uh and really ensure that you have the
energy
to take the most out of your
opportunities i would say like if you're
really desperate and really have nothing
to do
um uh i think learning sort of more data
analytic skills is always really useful
um so for example something like sequel
um
you know fairly lightweight and easy to
sort of pick up um i don't know connor
if you want to
add to that i think the only other thing
i would add and i would
absolutely agree with yuri's number one
advice to take to take the break
is just to start building really good
habits whether that's um
making sure that you're reading the news
for the sector on a regular basis
following kind of thought leaders in the
space just to sort of passively build
your knowledge of the sector
particularly if it is something that's
unfamiliar to you just understanding how
it works kind of
the kind of really basic business models
because building up those habits as
early as you can
i think just makes it easier so that you
don't have to worry about that type of
thing
while you're focusing on building kind
of the hardcore skills once you get to
the mba
awesome thank you hey
uh giddy factor and if i could just ask
questions
uh how would you like to someone not
from europe how would you exactly
explain the difference between tech in
dublin and tech in london or maybe even
other locations in europe like
berlin for example yeah
yeah yeah so i think the the ecosystem
piece is interesting right so when we
look at purely a careers angle dublin
tends to be very early career focused
so we run a careers trek out to dublin
focused on sort of early careers
because a lot of the roles you find out
in dublin are more analyst levels so
really useful
great for our sort of early career
students there
london tends to be a mix of sort of
everything to be honest product strategy
fintech the whole lot
uh in continental europe uh again you
have sort of pockets
um various berlin a lot in sort of
retail um
and sort of this uh kind of area um as
connor uh
convention amazon high is sort of
globally actually uh from london
to continental europe as well i don't
know connor if you want to talk about
sort of your experiences um in terms of
that absolutely so
yeah i'm kind of a a good example of
that in a weird way because i actually
ended up working for amazon in paris
uh because i'm canadian so i speak
french so they shipped me over to paris
um which was a such an amazing
experience
uh and such a positive one but yeah i
would say
definitely the larger tech companies
take a bit more of a european
uh view to it um but that by no means
kind of restricts your ability to work
in london if you're concerned about kind
of visa and sponsorship issues
um you know that's certainly something
that most of the
established companies will be totally
familiar with
and it's something that our visa office
can help uh
kind of smaller companies work through
as well um
so i think it's it's very feasible if
you want to make kind of a start
in london um certainly probably the
easiest
unless you know another european
language in which case the rest of your
becomes a lot more accessible to you
um cool uh ashley i'm sorry i'm just
going to buy a hand raised
so yeah okay thank you so much for the
informative session
that's very helpful so um for me
i have i come from sales background i've
been doing uh at sales at google for the
past two years
i'm looking to maybe exploring uh the
path of project management so i was
wondering
if you have any suggestions or resources
you need to recommend
me like to take advantage of our lbs
in order to pursue that path cool so i
think there's kind of two elements to
this so a lot of what we do
um in sort of the the degree program so
this course is dedicated towards product
management but also
aspects of product management that
explore it in more depth right so for
example there's a course specifically on
customer analytics
uh for example there's courses on
advanced marketing strategy
or areas that are really analogous um to
product management
um i think for those considering sort of
product management careers
what product management means is very
different in each of these companies
um so what a pm does at google is
completely different to what a pm does
at say amazon
and what you find is that the level of
technical depth needed to be a product
manager
can vary wildly across each company as
i'm sure you're aware
so it's also about tailoring your
practice to actually which companies are
you targeting
and taking advantage of those sort of
courses and opportunities accordingly
anything to add to that no i think well
said
yeah and i was
just wondering uh do the career centers
or like does the
technology or media club offers any
advices or resources about
uh the different directions of each like
different type companies and their part
of materials
uh yes so we do um essentially sort of
uh
career center and tmc i'll just kind of
lump them together
um we do several things from ranging
from sort of uh
firm specific type of advice right so we
literally ran a session which just
looked at
how to ace amazon interviews where we
spent hours talking about the leadership
principles which is always fun
um uh so really like company specific
interview prep and like what it means to
actually work at specific companies
but also verticals interview prep so how
to uh crack like a pm
interview and that kind of area so with
that mix and the career center also
offers like one-to-one support um as
well so you can like book
appointments with um our career center
advisors where they'll go through like
your cv tailor your cv
tailor your sort of uh skills um
and give you advice more individually on
how you
need um to prepare for those sort of
companies
okay thank you that was really helpful
thanks
i do have a question in the chat that
was pinned to me uh just about the
recruitment processes for the tech firms
um and i'll speak where we're kind of
running out of time so i'll speak very
very broadly
but uh we uh there's kind of two
different types of recruitment processes
i would say
you're structured and you're
unstructured so a lot of the
kind of larger firms will go through a
very structured recruitment process
where
they'll kind of come to campus
specifically looking for mbas
and those tend to take place further in
advance in the year
for other companies they tend to follow
a less structured process so they're
hiring not necessarily for kind of a
generic mba role
but instead for a specific um
catalytic role that they're looking to
fill that could be a startup or a
scale-up
um and those tend to take place in a
just more in a just-in-time fashion
um oh we are out of time but if you do
have any questions
on that i think we can stay late i don't
know what we're keeping you from
but and we're happy to expand on that if
you've reached out to either geary or
myself
um but yeah feel free i know we're going
to be kitten like 30 seconds but
feel free to like uh connect with us um
as well drop us a note
um by email et cetera we're doing the
session again tomorrow
um which is literally going to be the
same thing um and i'm sure sort of the
recordings
will be posted as well uh and um
obviously spend spend the time
to really interact with each other uh
over the coming months um
as well and yeah thanks very much
for joining the sessions of stuff soon

### Diversified @ The Careers Fair - 17th April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tj2blUoRR8

Idioma: en

hello everyone good afternoon good
morning good evening to
everyone wherever you're joining from
great to
see everyone um
yeah so i'm happy to kick off so let me
share my screen and we'll get started
you host a disabled screen share how can
i
circumvent i can make you host oh you
know you are already
i'm a host
well we could just start without screen
i suppose yeah that's that's fine
yeah um
yeah so okay well let's get started so
hi everyone um
my name is mustifa i'm joined by alex we
are two current mbas at lbs
uh super happy to be seeing a lot of you
and interacting with you uh the purpose
of the session
is to give you an overview of
diversified careers
at lbs so i guess alex and i will
briefly introduce ourselves talk about
our experience with
recruiting in the sectors that we're
involved in
and then we'll do q a um absolutely any
questions you have whether it's about
careers or anything
at all about life at lbs so um maybe
i'll pass to alex and he can get started
yeah thank you um i'm just gonna make
sure that we write our email addresses
in the chat so if you have any questions
after you
can get through to us and we'll keep the
intros brief so we can make lots of time
for questions
so i'm alex i'm from the uk um i
originally trained to be a naval
architect so i used to design ships for
a living which is a bit different i
suppose
um and i also ran a catering business
with my wife
alongside my full-time job so i've had a
few um i've worked in a few industries
and i've had some entrepreneurial
experience
um originally came to lbs to with the
intention of going into consulting
post-mba
um but in this summer i'm going to
actually work for a
personal healthcare startup just to get
a different flavor of
different industry step outside my
comfort zone and to try something new
um if i could give you a tip before
working with the career center i think
it would be certainly to
it's a two-way street so you get what
you want to put in
um so really get that dialogue going
sooner rather than later
work with them tell them about your
weaknesses your strengths what you
really want to do
and they will be able to help you as
much as they can so
really work on that two-way relationship
with the career center
hey sure um so i tried to coordinate
with liam to make me a host so i can
share my screen but i don't think that's
possible so
we'll just keep on powering through for
now um we had some super pretty slides
to show you but um that's totally okay
um cool so a bit about me um my name is
mustafa
i am a second year mba at lbs
um originally from the states i
uh before the mba i was doing consulting
work
at deloitte as a technology consultant
in the healthcare space
looking at healthcare analytics in the
u.s and the uk
working with organizations like um
public health entities in the u.s
nhs here in the uk johnson johnson
large health systems called cleveland
clinic if you heard that and some other
ones as well
i decided that i wanted to come out of
the weeds of technical data work for
some time so
i was basically able to join lbs
in the summer of 2019
and it's been absolutely amazing
experience i
learned a lot of new things that i just
never even knew that existed before so
definitely expanded my knowledge of the
unknown
i last summer i interned at
amazon in london where i was a product
manager for alexa
and this coming summer i will start
actually full time on amazon
working hopefully in the cloud business
in healthcare cloud
so that's me from our careers point of
view and
from an lbs life point of view i'm a
co-president of the healthcare club at
lbs so i'm super happy to
answer any questions at all about um
clubs at lbs and managing one and being
a part of one
and yeah um i guess i'll stop there for
now so
with that uh i i guess a few words that
i wanted to share
about diversified careers so diversified
careers at lbs
um is distinct from other structure
recruiting elements of lbs which include
consulting
finance and also technology so
diversified careers include
things like energy which alex is super
into consumer goods retail
health care which i'd like social impact
infrastructure and etc so got a lot of
that going on
and i see that harry's joining us as
well who's the current mba so welcome
harry so please help us out
happy too awesome so um
that's a bit of an overview of
diversified um
a common question that that we get that
i'll just go ahead and answer now
is recruiting timelines for diversified
careers versus
other structured careers so um if you're
an mba you have a two-year program
in the first year obviously you're
recruiting for internships most of those
internships will start recruiting
basically in the fall for structured
recruiting so
um or i should say kind of late winter
december to january feb for consulting
finance
um and you'll find that diversified
careers so what we're talking about
today
actually start from you know late jan to
feb going all the way through to april
and may
and what i loved about applying for
diversified careers um which by the way
includes technology
in that timeline is that you get a
little bit more time to
to you know experience lbs life and
before you're
thrown into the recruitment cycle so
that's a big plus
if your early careers um and i i
don't quote me on this but i think that
structured recruiting um
and kind of diversified recruiting
happens at the same time however you get
a longer timeline for the diversified
recruiting because it's both structured
through lbs career center as well as
unstructured through your networks
which lbs does also help you with so
um i'll pause on the rant there but um
super keen to open up for questions
so please shoot anything at all
um so i'm currently consulting um
for the healthcare industry and post mba
a little confused right now but maybe
uh tech and maybe the health tech space
so
i have like two questions so the first
one is where does
uh so which club can help me with more
resources
does this come into the healthcare
gambit or the tech gambit or both
um and the second one is um like you
said this is
the unstructured recruiting the
diversified sector so
is this like companies like babylon and
flight flat iron do they sort of
have postings on lbs webs on the lbs
portal or do we then just sort of
go through referrals and reach out to
people ourselves through linkedin
and the network generally
great question um so regarding your
first question regarding you know
the domains of the clubs i would say the
technology and healthcare clubs are both
extremely relevant for you
so within the healthcare club we have a
section of it that's devoted to health
tech
um and so we do lots of events with
folks like babylon
and startups in the space that are kind
of um led by alumni
um in short tech lots of different uh
players in the space uh technology club
uh which is officially called the
um technology and media club at lbs tmc
um it also does a lot of things within
healthcare and we collaborate with them
on those events so
being a member of both clubs would be
super advantageous to you and my general
advice actually is to join
every single club at lbs because your
your email box will be a bit flooded
but you'll you won't miss a thing and
you'll be able to widen your perspective
get involved in new things
um so i hope that answers your first
question your second question about um
[Music]
whether the recruiting is structured or
not for for these roles
um through the career center the answer
is it's a mixed bag
so um you know lbs has really strong
career ties with a lot of these
scale-ups like
babylon and so definitely any roles that
babylon would want to post
is through the career center and that
being said
um loads of events that we have that
allow you to network
and you know meet in small groups with
these companies so
in the case that they aren't ready to
like post a massive role
you know through lbs this is your
opportunity to get in there and ask
whether there's something available
um so you'll find that if you're
proactive you'll be able to use both the
lbs career center network as well as
your own network to
find what you're looking for hopefully
that helps right and that need not be
just in the summer internship period
like that can be throughout the second
year when you're doing some additional
part-time internships as well right
exactly absolutely
okay thank you thank you
big cat yep hi thank you so much guys
for doing this
uh alex i choose to take our last
conversation forward so i did ask you
this question
uh a couple of weeks back but just want
to understand uh the breadth of
opportunities for the diverse
sectors because i actually see it's one
of those lowest hiring industries so one
understand is it by choice
or uh just lps does not uh sort of
attract so many companies in the
diversified sector and i also
specifically because there's one company
that i'm very interested in
uh i want to actually take this up with
zoe as well which is uh
which is danaher uh so i think that is
one of the top recruiting companies
maybe at ncr and also esa uh and a
couple of us schools as well but it is
constantly always absent in the lbs
employment reports they just want to
understand that you know what
uh what about these companies and like
you know how can we sort of approach
them if they are not coming to lbs
uh directly to the group uh
okay um i'm not really sure about the
diversity
diversified recruiting stats um
but i think in terms of approaching
companies um
yeah it really pays network uh of course
so if you have any companies that you'd
really like to target
i think the first thing that you should
do is go on to the alumni hub when you
are
when you do arrive here go onto the
alumni hub see if there's anyone who
works those companies reach out to them
and then reach out via linkedin and the
usual channels
um what stuff i do have anything else to
add no that's that's fine maybe
harry does as well i don't know
uh yeah i mean they danah definitely
posts on the on the career
okay services side so like the options
there to apply for it so
it may just be a question of interest
and not like
like lack of yeah okay thank you
um zerry cherry
sherry yeah thanks so i'm quite
interested in social
impact or impact investment um and i do
see
the wheeler institute do higher
internships
and so i don't know if that's more
part-time or
more of the like full-time summer
internship
i don't know if you guys know uh kind of
that knowledge or
uh you know a bit more like doing
research
writing reports or you know what's a job
scope
thing roomie do you think you could help
with that i
actually can yeah i applied for one but
didn't get it so don't take all of my
advice
um so the they have year-round ones uh
which are part-time
and it's relatively like project based
so um with the wheeler institute of
business development if
if some of you haven't heard of it
essentially it's um uh
around social impact space social
entrepreneurship and there are some
social entrepreneurs alumni of lbs who
are still connected really strongly with
the wheeler institute
and they offer in partnership with the
wheeler institute
internships so that it's a wide variety
and some do pop up ad hoc and some
actually run
uh throughout the year so a couple of my
friends actually write for the wheeler
institute blog
and that's a part-time essentially an
internship and they're usually
um sort of thought leadership pieces on
on stuff that's actually happening right
now
um so essentially almost like
any answer with lbs is if you want
something it's there
so if you want part-time yes if you want
full-time during the summer yes
if you want like a casual just like
writing job yes some of the roles are
more research oriented
um but if you keep an eye on the um
postings
that's a really good place once you join
as well i definitely recommend that you
um join the mailing list with wheeler
institute and then you'll get all of the
newsletters and within that they'll tell
you about the roles that are coming up
it answers the question awesome thanks
romy
my pleasure
yeah please please do raise your hand uh
if you have any other questions and
while you're thinking of them
um maybe i'll i'll able to i'm able to
add some light as well to your question
um cheery as well about uh social impact
so actually one of my close friends
did a great internship at the wheel
institute in which um
he was paired with another student and
both of them were paired with a faculty
member
and they were essentially helping um a
project with the government of zambia to
to help them look into how to better um
organize their supply chain their cold
chain for certain medicines in zambia in
order to
both for collective bargaining purposes
and for um kind of efficient
purchasing and distribution of medicines
and so i think it's very practical
he learned a lot from that experience
and i definitely recommend you to look
into those types of internships
um and that was a part-time role but i
think you can find a mix between
part-time during the year as well as
full-time in the summer so
really interesting um and if you're
interested as well i can also share some
information generally about social
impact
within lbs there's a great impact
consulting club um
as well as social impact week and laws
that happen
on campus so if you're interested i can
talk about that as well
great thanks i'm actually based in
zambia now so i'm super interested
uh maybe i can yeah reach you out
after the meeting thanks yeah i'll put
my email in the chat for sure
if anyone has any non-recruiting
questions please feel free to ask as
well
ideally about lbs
hey this is kanika hyo it's
semi-recruiting not completely
including um so i'm currently working as
a strategy consultant with deloitte and
i'm looking to switch to the social
impact space
um and i'm looking to actually while you
know the mvps and the likes of mbbs do
have a really strong social impact
practice uh i'm looking to work with the
likes of the un
or bill and melinda gates or a dell
foundation uh so what are the kind of
opportunities
uh and it doesn't necessarily have to be
like an internship but what what are the
kind of opportunities that we have at
lvs
where we can explore or explore this
area and for me right now it's like i'm
very passionate about working in that
space
but sometimes you know you can be
passionate about something but when you
really start working on a project you
realize this is not your space
um and i i don't mean to say that i
don't have a conscience it's just
you know when you when you you know you
think you want to do something and when
you do something you realize that
there's a big difference
um so what are the kind of different
opportunities barring you know working
or getting along with the social impact
club or impact investment club and so on
and so forth
alex what's your first pastor do you
want me or rumi
sorry just um i'm part of the social
impact club xcode so i thought i could
pipe in here so we have loads of
competitions that run throughout the
year and same with impact consulting
club to be honest
most clubs have loads of competitions
that run um
i took part in the impact consulting
club project
my background isn't consulting so it was
more that i was trying to get the
experience for
um but that i would recommend getting
involved in those competitions
so you know if your interest lies in
tech for good there's a competition for
that if it's impact investing we have
the big mint competition
which actually is lbs first and then
widens out globally to other business
schools so if you make it through
and that's quite a prestigious one um
but i think
just figuring out once you get to lbs
and you start receiving you know the the
different
um options really think about what it is
what space is that you're specifically
interested in exploring um because there
is going to be a lot
of opportunities to to explore um by
that
other than going and signing up for a
summer internship for a part-time
internship during um
during uh uh what's it called what am i
trying to say
academic time um you can
you can definitely get involved in those
competitions they help
i don't get an idea and like also being
part of
xcos is a really really nice way to
like network with people who have been
there and done that especially if
they've worked in the space that you're
interested in working in and you can
have some very candid conversations
um so i i recommend you know social
impact that you're interested in
obviously i'm going to say this i'm part
of the xco right now
join the club as like an actual um
active member to
you know take care of care of one
particular area
so just to follow a question um i do i
do know the
um the cause that i want to walk towards
but
um uh i it's really niche
so i'm okay with like actually working
in the industry and getting a hang of it
so i want to work specifically to solve
for uh
you know domestic violence physical
abuse and whatever sort of relationship
anyone is in
uh but that's really really niche so i
understand that you know i'm not going
to
find the perfect problem to solve right
um
they would like expanding and learning
and then really sort of finding nice
space in the
industry so i'm coming from that
perspective that i'm actually really
open to exploring so would that be
anything else apart from you know these
competitions with social impact
it could be a volunteer opportunity as
well uh
for example honestly um it the
experience is whatever you
you make it um so you just mentioned
that i've got a couple of friends that
have worked in that space
um even like ad hoc volunteering work
um so it's having these conversations
the i hate the
word networking in like a very like
official way but
really just having chats with people and
for them putting you in touch with
someone else who then puts you in touch
with someone else
and that's the bet that's a really great
way to find new opportunities

### Finance Club @ The Clubs Fair - April 16 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDGxMwCAhIQ

Idioma: en

okay thank you all for joining in uh the
finance club breakout room
um hopefully they're not going to be any
technical glitches from my side today
um i'm sugandha sapra i'm um
an mba student i'm in my second year
right now and will be graduating
this summer i am also the co-president
of
the finance club and it's really great
to have you all in this breakout room
as i mentioned this is a recorded
session um as are most of the breakout
rooms today
so you can reference this back as well
um as needed
so in terms of the format i'll try
and keep the kickoff presentation kind
of short so that um
you all get plenty of time to basically
ask as many questions as you want um
i hope you can see my screen
i'll start off with the club overview
as mentioned i'm the co-president and i
lead the leadership team
uh for finance club along with vikram
and dan
um it's it's a small team it's about
nine people in total
um across external relations events and
operations and training and development
team
uh the segmentation will make more sense
once we start talking about the events
that we
organize for the finance club in terms
of the background of the club
it's basically um a career club if you
are for example
in interested in investment banking
prior
private wealth management or any other
roles in the finance
industry or any finance specific roles
i highly recommend joining this club um
it kind of
helps get you up to speed with the
requirements for different roles um prep
you
for the roles that you would be
interviewing for and also
help you build your network and be more
aware of the trends in the industry
in terms of the club activities
it's broadly segmented into these four
pillars
training and development it's it's
really important it's a key pillar
um we understand people come from
different backgrounds
and different levels of technical
knowledge
of financial modeling and
you know finance related technical
interviews so
we try to bring in training
trainings through either external
consultants or internal
trainings which are relevant to help for
example fill that
skill gap in a way we also organize a
lot of speaker events and
competitions throughout the year on
issue
topical issues and trends within the
industry which helps you
stay up to date with the finance
industry
we try and organizing networking events
across bulge bracket
and boutique banks and also engage as
much
alums and second year students that we
can to help
um with the networking events
um there's a lot of recruitment support
as well we
work with career center to kind of
collate different uh resources for
interviews for networking etc so those
are available
through um lbs internal sites
and uh those are quite helpful and i
highly recommend
leveraging those once you're at lbs um
i'll give you some highlight of the type
of events that we have over the past
year
um and then we can probably kick off
with the q a
and i'll try answer as many questions as
i can today
so in terms of the people the three key
pillars that i mentioned
um and kind of recruitment is
built into these but the three killer
key pillars that i mentioned
training and development is an important
one
we organized last year or this academic
year actually
wall street prep evaluation and
financial modeling
boot camps we've also had external
consultants come in for technical
interviews
um we've had one day boot camps for that
and
we have a project finance modeling uh
workshop coming up
we also collate um interview resources
which include
real life past interview questions
and also kind of
guidance around networking coffee chats
etc which
um are quite highly recommended once
you're here and if you're interested in
finance
um speaker events and competitions we
organized
this past year um the first ever emea
case competition
hosted by lbs in collaboration with
insead
it was the first emea specific uh case
competition
um with british and european b-school
uh b-schools participating um and it was
a
very well-received competition
which we hope to continue in the coming
years as well
we regularly have panel discussions and
speakers
speaker events as well um which include
ibd alum panels and speakers from bulge
brackets or boutique banks coming
in in terms of the networking events
um there's there's some events that are
organized um
by in collaboration with bulge bracket
bands
or boutique banks as well some of them
are invite only so
um the discretion is not with us in
terms of who gets to
um participate we also organized early
careers
dinner series for people with
less or no prior experience in some of
the finance fields where they could have
dinner with
for example second-year mbas or
first-year mbas who had prior experience
in uh different fields and this year it
was more uh
focused around virtual networking um
given the times that we are in um
but hopefully by the time
hopefully by the time you guys are
joining there would be some element of
in person as well but
yet to see on that um with that i think
we can kick off with q a from your side
um i'll stop sharing the screen um
and happy to answer any questions
that you might have
it might be helpful to kind of mention
your program
um as well just to get some context on
uh where you're from
edward uh i see you've raised your hand
yes thank you uh just a quick question
so is there a way to get involved
so first of all i will be part of the
masters in finance full-time program
starting in august and my question is is
there a way to get involved
in the finance club prior to joining or
is there something that you recommend
doing
let's say if you're interested to join
prior to joining lbs
so uh in terms of joining
prior to basically joining lbs it's kind
of
dependent on when you get access to the
lbs campus groups which
is something that we don't control it
happens automatically for all programs
after a certain point
i would expect after you've accepted
your offer
eventually i mean slightly before
joining you get access to it
but um it's kind of limited to
you know having access to the campus
groups if there are events that are
organized for example this event
um that are organized for admits or
people who will be joining
in the coming academic year that's
something um
that you guys can join but beyond that
um
it's it's a limitation around whether
you have access to campus groups or not
i hope that answers your question uh yes
it does thank you
any other questions guys um could be
around networking
recruitment um i see
drove did you raise us yeah okay
hi um hi my name is rube i'm joining the
mfa
so is it possible if you can quickly
explain how xcodes work in relation
to early career programs
so when do we start applying for
positions if you have positions and if
you can quickly detail what positions
you may have
sure so giving uh last year's
um exco as an example and these uh
positions change from year to year a bit
uh as well but taking last year's
positions as an example
um we had a few exco members who
so it's it's generally split between um
mid-career and early career so the
positions that are open
are either for mid-career students or
early career and across the board
um there's space for both mid-career and
early career so as you would see
um we have people from mid-career in
each of the
pillars and from early careers as well
so early careers would be
programs where you you don't necessarily
have prior work experience or don't have
significant prior work experience so
your
um master's management and mfa as you
mentioned
in terms of the timeline for
when you can join the xco
generally once you join the campus there
are kickoff
uh presentations for all of the um
clubs they happen sometime around
early september i would say roughly
and by the time it's end of september
we have our end of september early
october we have our
um x cos in place by that time
so that would be around the time when
you would be applying for the x
compositions
perfect thank you
uh gotham do you have your hand raised
yeah hi can you hear me yes i can
so i just wanted to understand uh what
is the principal difference between like
finance club and the pe and vc club
and if you would recommend which one i
would i would probably have to choose
sure so um
in terms of the so finance club is more
focused on
um so pvc club if i start with that it's
it's more focused on uh private equity
and venture capital and the buy side
um kind of networking and by side focus
finance club on the other hand is um
in some sense it's more geared toward
investment banking and private wealth
management but it's it's also broader
because it's catering to
the finance rules that you might be
targeting so
it kind of depends on um
what your career goals are for
personally i would recommend
joining both because yes there is an
overlap in terms of
um the technical skills that you would
need either in investment banking or
private equity so um
there are offerings which are and
especially as the
pe or vc and finance worlds are kind of
moving together
um there is overlap but
um there is also different
focus that both the groups have um
so it there's no clear-cut answer
uh as you can tell but in terms of
building for example
um foundational technical skills
um we offer a lot of financial modeling
and valuation
um workshops we offer finance
finance technical interview workshops as
well which i would say personally are
both applicable
for if you're sitting for interviews in
finance rules or pevc
so to give you an example pvc would
organize um
workshops or bootcamps for lbo modeling
which gets a bit more specific in some
sense to
um be evc but
um but i i would definitely
recommend joining both the groups and uh
kind of exploring
the offerings that they have
uh anshuman do you have your hand raised
as well
sorry it's difficult to tell with the
share screen but yeah
yeah so so just as a good background
i've done investment banking and i've
done private equity
uh so it's kind of you know i've got
about the flavor of the sell side and
the buy side
i was trying to kind of understand that
you know how does it how do
how does one apply for a exco level
position in
in the first year and then you know in
the second year kind of
for co-president like you are currently
uh how does one get to that
and and you know what's the kind of
competition
how how hard it is a little bit more
details on that
sure so um i would say it depends club
to club but if i take finance club as an
example
um in terms of the exco positions uh as
i was mentioning
um the exco rules open up
sometime early to mid september for all
clubs
and we get a finalized exco team by end
of september early october that's
in terms of the timeline and then in
terms of the competition
xcode positions some of them are um
i'd say excel positions you you get a
lot of applications for them
but at the same time i would think
that um if you have relevant kind of
um if you are really interested in the
club and if you have
new ideas for the club it's it's we
are more than eager to have like as many
people as
um kind of the club allows in some sense
but
if you're bringing in new ideas and are
really excited about the club um
that's all that you need to show in
terms of um
interviews for we have when we have the
exco positions open
open up in uh september um next year
in terms of the leadership team that
happens when you are in the second year
of your program
um so and it's it's more relevant for
mid career
um courses so um
we will be electing our exco position so
leadership positions this
this april actually so quite shortly
that's that's based on voting so you put
forward your nomination
along with your team or you know
singularly but you put forward your
nomination and it gets opened up to the
finance club members
so that's how the leadership positions
get filled
got it thank you yeah
i think we have a couple of minutes more
so we might be able to
get one or two questions and yes jade
you had a question
yes hi hi uh so i'm an
mba 2023 candidate
and i had questions around um
you know those presentations that are
sort of on invitation
only basis um and
how does one get access or get invited
to that is it based on
our individual networking or is it uh
something related to the career center
or
is there like a portal we can submit our
cvs on
sure so you're talking about the
networking events i believe
uh the that the banks have some of them
are invite only is that what you're
talking about
yes correct okay so uh for them uh it's
through
submitting your cvs and some of them are
invite only not all of them but like
it's through submitting your cvs and
those cvs get shortlisted by the bank
so um we facilitate that but we are not
involved in the shortlisting so that's
something that's done by banks
themselves
so is it basically that we have to apply
on the bank's websites or is it
something
or is there like a career services
portal
for nbs it's a combination of both some
of them are through the lbs portal some
of them
are through um links that the banks
share so like their own website
okay do you encourage us to um you know
before the start of the
program in august or september to start
uh
you know talking to people networking
and
um preparing ourselves ahead of
uh all of that i mean i
wouldn't discourage you from doing uh
any prep beforehand
um there are a lot of resources once you
join lbs in terms of guiding you through
um coffee chats guiding you through
recruitment
and those are really helpful as well so
i wouldn't discourage you from
doing any prep beforehand but um once
you come in you'll see that it's it's
quite structured as well in terms of the
resources that we have at hand
excellent thank you okay i think our
thank you all for joining i think the
room is closing now

### FLII Club @ The Clubs Fair - 17 April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCQW4_C2gSw

Idioma: en

yeah yeah okay um
let's start so welcome to the first
generation
low and intermediate income club
at lbs which is a very newly formed club
we just received approval from essay
to launch the club two weeks back and we
had our kickoff like literally day
before yesterday
sorry why is it not going on full screen
mode yeah
uh yes so what do we stand for first
generation
means people who were first in their
families to graduate from university
low income and intermediate income are
sort of explanatory but
um yeah basically what you can
understand from the name is we are
trying to
celebrate promote socio-economic
diversity within the student body
why does this matter because
socioeconomic diversity like other forms
of diversity like gender
race sexual orientation is one of the
core
pillars diversity pillars for lbs it is
invisible
like sexual orientation but it does
affect our experiences
and our um sort of like uh how we
navigate the corporate world and
everything
a little bit about me for example i come
from bangladesh
which is where i had like i spent like
most of my life before the mba
i come from a sort of a middle-income
lower middle income background
um yeah i was the first in my family to
graduate from university
and at every stage i felt like the odds
were stacked against me
i did not have the social capital to
navigate
the um the challenges and sort of the
business world
i for example i did not even know the
university that i ended up
uh doing my undergraduate and like know
the name of the university just few
weeks before my admission
because i didn't have that social
capital right
uh i ended up working in a bank and then
again like i had to navigate my way
and business school for example always
felt like beyond my reach
not only could i not afford it but i
also didn't see myself in the elite
sort of business school graduate
profiles and that's what i think
when you look at many of the business
school sort of graduates and stuff you
will feel
um that kind of a lack of likes lack of
belonging
and that's why this club is basically
there
to help you find a sense of belonging
and to discuss
this diversity pillar which often goes
undiscussed and the challenges that
people from
sort of low-income and first-gen
backgrounds face
to navigate school life and then beyond
and there's a ton of research out there
that shows that experiences are
different from
for people from these backgrounds and
this is the first time that we have been
able to create a platform to discuss
these issues
and help you navigate um yep so our
mission with this club as
uh you can see here is first to promote
representation of socio-economic
diversity at lbs
second we want to create a safe space
where people uh lb students from these
backgrounds can embrace their identities
and find a sense of belonging
and third we want to enable a platform
where fly students
can network and find the support to grow
and advance
related to these missions we have four
goals we have three like basically we
have three goals on the representation
front we are trying to work with
admissions and recruitment to enable
uh basically broaden our recruitment and
enable uh
admissions from a more
socio-economically diverse student body
at lps
for example one of the things uh we
basically ran a survey in
a few weeks back because lvs doesn't
track this data like who is from what
kind of background
so we basically ran an informal sort of
anonymous survey and we found that
uh this kind of fly representation from
developing countries is
extremely extremely low for example from
india
indian subcontinent like from south asia
india bangladesh
pakistan we only have six percent of our
student body from these kind of
backgrounds which is
um yeah which is quite surprising
because a lot of these students have
high potential but they are not being
able to make it the business school so
what can we really do to improve the
representation of people from these
backgrounds
at lps um that's on the representation
front
second on uh we want to work to raise
awareness
of this diversity pillar and for that we
have a number of community initiatives
planned
panels with faculty members bringing
alumni
into the community sharing their
experiences
and a core part of this is storytelling
because uh my co-founder and
co-president
michelle who could not be here today
because she is in the u.s and it's like
2am where she is right now uh so anyway
she could uh
we too basically met through a
storytelling exercise in one of our
electives
called interpersonal dynamics so yeah if
you get the chance definitely do that
elective
very uh a very good one but the point
that i'm trying to make here is
it was through storytelling that we met
and we realized that we had lived
through
similar experiences and challenges
and we set out to find whether there are
other people like us who we could
support and basically
um enable a platform to help them and so
storytelling is
hugely important uh we want people to
embrace their identities come out
share their stories because there is a
lot of resilience that you can see in
these stories
of people from these backgrounds
um and i'm sure like those of you who
are from those backgrounds here you know
how far you have come and how far
like the challenges the odds that were
stacked against you
uh so through these community
initiatives we basically want to ensure
that
future business leaders from lbs have
this concept to support their colleagues
from fly backgrounds because once we
enter the corporate
world we will be managers we will be
leading people even if we are not from
fly backgrounds we need to be aware of
this diversity pillar
and um you know be sort of cognizant
of all kinds of people around us
on the last goal progression we are
working to partner with
corporates to legitimize this diversity
a few of the big corporates
especially like some other big
consulting firms like mckinsey and stuff
they have started
identifying this diversity barrier um
sort of this diversity pillar
and uh so our goal is to broaden the
reach work with different kinds of
corporates bring them on chemicals to
talk about this to help them address
some of the biases that exist in
recruiting
and you would be surprised to see what
uh
like there's a lot of biases that exist
in recruiting for people from these
backgrounds
uh to help people fly students to
network recruit and succeed
in jobs and beyond and the last one is
quite important
it is to set up a mentoring mentorship
program which
as of now there is no way to identify
alumni
from fly backgrounds but with this club
hopefully
and i um like i am graduating for
example this june i'm a second year mba
uh so from next year obviously i'll
become an alumnus um
alumni as well and uh the goal with this
club is to enable a sort of like
paying forward loop where alumni can
mentor people
from fly backgrounds students new admits
who join the school
um these are some of the pillars of the
club as i mentioned storytelling is
front and center because there is a huge
amount that we can learn we can relate
to peop
people by hearing their stories and then
we have community analysis as i
mentioned before career advancement
advocacy one of fundraising is also one
of the things we are trying to work on
to enable
basically scholarships so need based
scholarships specially for people from
these backgrounds
it's going to be a long way we are just
starting the discussions but
uh success indicator here probably could
be black and business club
which was launched last year recently
launched a black focused business
uh sorry sort of lbs scholarship
which which is like a huge achievement
and uh we are also trying to likely
and see what we can do about it for
students
of our club
these are the pillars
um yeah i mean i i just wanted to show
you guys
what the exco executive committee
structure would look like because once
uh from what i understand you don't have
access to campus groups as of now
um but once you join you will basically
from august onwards you will start
hearing from different clubs on the sort
of different
opportunities that those clubs will have
to be part of the executive committee
to shape the strategy um and these are
like some of the rules that we have
co-presidents and treasurer we are
already recruiting as of now so these
would be from current students
but the rest of the roles depending on
obviously the leadership who would be at
that time
and you could have like junior vp uh not
just
people junior vp and all of that so
these would be the teams uh chief of
staff where we are doing a lot of like
advocacy related stuff
marketing uh storytelling as i said
community analysis career advancement
which would involve alumni engagement
corporate partnerships
so the goal is to basically um show you
that there is lots of ways that you can
get involved once you join at lbs
um the leadership at that point will
obviously be reaching out to you
they will have their kickoffs and all of
that but this is just to get you
thinking and as a new club there is
a lot that you can do uh to shape the
strategy because we have just launched
and there are like tons of possibilities
instead of some traditional uh clubs
where you don't have a lot of like
headway so yes
um upcoming events we have
uh two upcoming events i'm not sure
whether
you uh you must have gotten
notifications through meet mba
i'm not sure how that works but you must
have received a link because we have a
number of admits who have signed up
let me know if you don't have the links
and i can share the link
one is a belonging workshop which is
which is going to be held by anita ratan
who is our associate professor
at of organizational behavior she's an
amazing amazing speaker and facilitator
and she's going to talk about how you
can find the sense of belonging
in situations where you feel like you
don't fit in and you don't belong which
is
often felt by by people from these
minority backgrounds
uh and the next one is storytelling in
business which is basically how to craft
your stories
um in a business context which is super
important as well
and even more important for people from
fly backgrounds to
articulate their stories of resilience
and what they've been through
so yeah let me know if you don't have
the links and i can share that
um lastly i just wanted to
show you a bit on what uh
initiatives we already have in progress
so other than the two events that you
saw
we are trying to set up storytelling
salons under community
uh we are trying to organize a panel on
myth of meritocracy which basically
talks about and some of these things we
will open it
up to admit so keep an eye on meet mba
that you'll get the notifications there
mead of meritocracy basically talks
about how
education isn't the final equilibr
equalizer like even if you have
um education there are tons of like
other factors that come into play and
elliot who is a professor at london
business school and takes a very popular
elective called path to power he is
going to talk about
this um and we have a bunch of other
educational awareness sessions coming up
over the next two or three months
on the career advancement as i said we
are working with corporates
uh to try to bring them on campus and do
some sort of like targeted networking
chats talk about this
um their diversity initiatives we are
also trying to bring alumni from these
backgrounds so that they can talk about
very real their experiences what they
faced and all of that
um and on the third this is something
important that we are trying to do we
are trying to build advocacy with other
student clubs
and once you come into lbs you will
realize i mean obviously in a pandemic
world
it's it's still not as um
exhausting but in a non-pandemic world
like
every event that you go to would cost
you like 40 50 bucks
and if you have like three or four
events every month it adds up and
like yeah puts a hole into your pocket
like anything
uh so what we're trying to do is we're
trying to build advocacy with other
student clubs to
launch like budget friendly events or
some sort of subsidies for
people from fly backgrounds to help them
with the finances
um and then on the admissions
recruitment fund as i said we are
working to broaden recruitment
hold prospect checks and all of that
they're also working with faculty to
improve representation of
fly in fly people in their cases
and in sort of educational materials
that we use in class
so those are the things that we are
working on the advocacy front and as i
mentioned as a
newly formed club and this being a
diversity pillar that's
rarely talked about this advocacy piece
is like
the strongest and top priority piece for
us right now
yep that's it um yeah thank you so much
for tuning in i want to leave the last
few minutes for
question answers uh so yeah feel free to
um unmute yourself and ask anything
any sort of questions that you have yeah
just feel free to pop in this is a safe
space
um yeah
i will also post in the chat
our um so i understand you can't join
campus groups as of now
right so i'll post in the chat
i'll post in the chat our linkedin page
our whatsapp and our instagram
you can follow us here and keep updated
on the events and what's coming
also on like some thought leadership and
once i think once you get access you'll
obviously be able to join the club as
well
and yeah i mean you don't one thing i
want to emphasize is you don't have to
be from a fly background of urgent low
income or intermediate income background
to be a member of the club or even to
be a part of the exco we love allies and
the livestream is something that
is our priority and we are trying to
work on like that's something we
definitely want to promote
um and it's super important that you
come forward
forward as an ally and create a place of
belonging for your fellow colleagues and
students as well so yeah that's that's
super important as well
so yeah it's open for everyone
you mentioned a couple of professors
there who clearly are supporting it
um are they are they speaking are they
actively involved
like what's their what's their sort of
role with with the club
kind of didn't trust them yep good
question so i mean when we started out
like um with the like it was just an
idea in november when we started out
uh to launch this club we were like
totally lost we didn't know where to
start and how to even go about it and
just to give you an idea like our
student association basically lb student
association has a
um sort of um guideline that you have to
be a society for 12 months and then only
you can become a club so
i think that's like a huge achievement
that we were able to become a club in
like a four month
timeline and that's thanks to a lot of
faculty and
it's like senior stakeholders within the
school who supported us
and recognized the importance of this um
conversation so we have a lot of faculty
one is randall peterson
who i guess you'll meet once you join
lvs you'll have a leadership call
course called glam which is like in the
first few weeks
he takes that randall um peterson he's
from sort of this kind of a background
in fact and he's our faculty
advisor he even spoke at the kickoff
he's an amazing person to just talk to
and has lots of amazing connections in
the uk and beyond
uh very well connected and really
identifies with the cause
and the other professors i talked about
are um
elliot sherman who takes parts to power
and
that's one course that i would recommend
like if you have the chance definitely
to take it
it's one of the only courses which talks
about socioeconomic diversity like we
had one class
dedicated to myth of meritocracy and you
know how
even if you have like the best of
education there are so many barriers
that you have to face and all of that
um yeah so he is going to talk about
that
in one of the panels um and other
faculty are also like we are having on
enough discussions to
um advocate for this but everyone has
been like super supportive
any other questions or
yeah beyond the club lvs live anything
there are there are other business
schools that have this sort of um
this whole club because you're right
it's like a super important pillar of
um diversity but is rarely talked about
even
um in other organizations if you have
you seen other business schools that you
could
also partner with or is this just um
technically pioneering yes great
question
so we were actually inspired by stanford
who has this club
um it's called fly there as well um
but having said that lbs is among the
first i guess in european like
especially at the mba level
none of the business schools have this
club so we are among the first leading
business schools to start
this conversation which is amazing which
shows a lot about how lbs is placing
emphasis on this

### Tech and Media Club @ The Clubs Fair - 17 April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhOaUv17DI0

Idioma: en

good morning or good afternoon or good
evening i guess uh depending on
where you're diving in uh today um
thanks so much for joining
our session on the tech and media club
um at lbs
uh here so we're just gonna go through
very very quickly um
over the next 20 minutes or so what the
tech and media club is all about
uh touch upon the initiatives that we
look at and
what's in store for next year as well so
as a quick introduction uh i'm gary um
i've interact with some of you um
already um
in various sort of admissions events uh
so i was the co-president for
the tech and media club this year uh
joined by claudia who's actually going
to be taking over as
as one of the presidents for the tech
and media club um in the upcoming
academic year um
so over the year a lot of my focus has
been really to pivot the school
uh into focusing more on technology and
media
both from a student-led angle and both
across from a school angle
and just wanted to talk to you guys
about some of the stuff
that we've been up to so if we really
look at what tmc is like
overall um really it's about that focal
point for the tech and media agenda
at the school um it's a huge club it's
one of the largest on campus
with over 4 000 members with that very
strong alumni community
to supplement that as well we run over
60 plus
annual events ranging from speaker
series to conferences
as well as 10 plus international tracks
where we really connect students
out to industry um from the uk in
physical
and this year virtual international
tracks really for us it's about focusing
on education
in terms of the sector inspiring folks
to actually
uh look at tech and media and building a
collaborative community
to really empower students to explore
careers in this sector
in a really like innovative and
approachable and like fun way because
ultimately that's what the industry is
really all about
and we work really across the school
across students faculty
uh the career service companies and on
our industry contacts
as well as a global alumni pool there to
really create those meaningful
deep partnerships to create opportunity
so looking a step further so lbs really
is about is pivoting to be a very tech
focused business school so
um over the last couple of years a lot
of what i've been working on is pivoting
school
into tech and building out a whole range
of streams
across academics career center
student-led initiatives
as well as alumni and partnerships to
pivot students into the tech sector
as a result what we've seen is that a
huge number of
students go into technology from the
school so nearly half of my year in mba
2021
are entering into the tech sector and
post graduation which as you can see
there
it's a huge increase on just sort of a
few years
before and as part of that um i uh sit
on top of the school's
governing body looking at how we look at
technology and media
education and careers embedded into the
degree programs
so you can see on the academic side we
introduced uh initiatives such as a
technology and analytics mba
concentration
opening up courses such as product
management sql python tableau digital
strategy fintech etc
and embedded as part of the careers
curriculum from a career center angle
there's a lot of support on that in
terms of on-campus recruiting
sector specific advice as well as peer
leader programs and industry
partnerships
we're talking a lot more about that in
our career session on tech later on
today
but what we really want to focus on here
is the student-led side um
so the tech and media club itself
so our club really looks at sort of
these three
pillars um and areas as it were so we do
a whole host of
speaker events where we really bring
alumni back from industry onto campus or
virtually this year
talking about their experiences their
advice and their hints and tips
on various um tools in the application
process for all of these companies
we run a flagship event every year
called products at lbs purely focusing
on product management
and bringing together a real community
of folks interested in that sector
globally into london um over over a week
or so
conference we do a huge range of company
visits out in industry
um ranging from london to across the
world in london literally like the
facebook and amazon offices are barely
like a short walk or a tube right away
and we really leveraged our london
location um to visit companies
as well as go further in international
tracks we run a very successful
mentorship program called elevate where
we partner first-year students who are
entering the school not only mbas but
also early careers
and we partnered them with an industry
mentor um who's really
guiding their journey throughout their
it's time at lbs
um uh to really build a set of skills to
enable people who
may not be from technology backgrounds
and enable them to pivot into technology
if that's a career sector
that they want to explore as well and as
part of that program we offer a whole
range of workshops and skills courses
ranging
from sql to digital marketing etc so a
huge
portfolio of programs that also tie
into degree education um such as the
technology and analytics mba
that i talked about on the previous sort
of slide so really for us it's about
using the club to really build knowledge
for the sector create those partnerships
and be part of a really interesting
community uh on a global basis to power
technology and media
at the school in a very sort of informal
and yet professional way
we're a very chilled club um we do a lot
of creative things
and really work with our industry
partners to make that happen
and some of the key things um that we do
just to highlight
some of the main events products at lbs
so our flagship conference we've brought
about 250 students together virtually
this year
um or last year in november 2020
focusing across
industry trends insights guidance and
support um
and these were all speeches from key
leaders in product management or and
slash or our alumni base as well who
again came back
and and spoke about sort of their
experiences what they learned how they
leveraged their london business school
experience
in their future career and really built
that partnership um
uh and community of product enthusiasts
on
campus the elevate mentorship program so
this year we had 18 mentees in the first
year
partnered with 40 alumni mentors so two
to one and these students are trained by
the alumni mentors via workshops
hands-on projects as well as even job
shadowing opportunities
in their specific companies and that's
augmented by a skills portfolio for
example here's
the digital bootcamp that we ran um a
couple of months ago there and that's
really to help
students kick start a career in tech so
irrespective where your background is
whatever industry you're in
you don't need a tech background to be
part of the club or get involved in the
club's activities because
our programming is very holistic uh
depending on
the level that you're sort of entering
in and one of the things that we do
in elevate is to really focus on people
who
don't have that tech background and
ensure that they have the skills the
network and the opportunities
to go into the tech sector
international tracks and experiential so
this is actually what i was involved in
in the club
in my first year uh so in 2019 so i was
the lead for the dublin track uh
and uh honestly this is my favorite part
of the club where we really connect
students from london
to industry we go out we visit all of
these amazing technology hubs
from london new york dublin silicon
valley berlin
singapore this year we introduced
multiple uh additional tracks
so we were on a virtual track which
literally ended this week
out to india looking at companies like
swiggy and the indian tech ecosystem
we're doing another check out uh pan
africa to look at technology and
innovation in the african continent
um in a couple of weeks as well and
these are amazing experiences that
students can be part of
um while they're at lbs and through tmc
because we really connect
students to companies we visit their
offices we look at
project-based work with these companies
we network with
not only sort of our alumni there but
key business leaders across all of these
organizations
you can see on the right there these are
some photos from our dublin trek
um a couple of years ago uh dropbox and
the first one and
google and the second one again great to
get a group of students out
to industry there and these are all
cross programs so you interact
across the school whether you're mba
early careers sloan amber etc
and they're very truly global physical
and virtual
international experiences so hopefully
next year we can get back to these kind
of pictures
rather than loads of photos of zoo um
and that's the hope uh for next year but
we really leverage that virtual context
to expand our treks portfolio
as i mentioned in new areas um for
example um
claudia incidentally ran our first ever
new york trek um
virtually this year um which is highly
successful
sorry so if we really look at sort of
further reading there's a lot of
information
um that uh we will post so this slide
deck is on our huddle so please do join
our huddle on meet
um and i know you guys will have access
to that we're very active on linkedin
as well where we post sort of the latest
thought leadership as well as sort of
our own website as well
we just launched actually a new
quarterly magazine
um with a lot of insights and articles
from uh former interns who had worked in
the tech industry
and sort of uh retelling sort of their
experiences
more broader some of the links we've
added in here talk about sort of how
we're looking at the mba
in terms of careers and technology how
we're building up
tech and media skills in our degree
programs um
that will really power uh careers in the
sector um
at lbs both from a student-led angle and
both from the school angle
so on the career side we'll be doing
sort of an additional session this
afternoon in a couple of hours
where i'll talk more about sort of the
career center angles of that school
scenario where i'm involved in the
school
but yeah this is just um more about sort
of what uh
we do in in tech and media club and it
really you know from a personal
standpoint this has been the highlight
of my time at lbs so leaving the club
it's been a fantastic personal and
professional experience and i think
the scope of what we do and the scale of
what we do you know with half of our
students going to tech
is is actually truly amazing in terms of
reach there
and um thrilled to be joined by claudia
who uh
literally got elected to be uh
co-president of the club um
earlier this week so thanks so much
julia for joining um outlaw
at the last minute so i'm over to you
for a quick intro
ah thanks gary for having me obviously
and it's yeah been a really really
exciting week
um but yeah i'm claudia i'm originally
from sydney australia um
and completely just to echo what gary
said you do not have to have a tech
background
to be involved um with the tmc club so
i'm
originally from a banking background um
and obviously
you know um did the trek last year which
was really successful it was also
um on the same week as the election
results so it was a really exciting trek
um and really really excited to to um
great you all on campus this year
um and just essentially build out on the
fantastic job that gary and the rest of
the team
um have done this year so welcome
everyone looking forward to seeing you
great so six minutes and 40 seconds uh
so
if you guys have any questions feel free
to just
unmute um and just ask i think you guys
should be able to sort of unmute
yourselves
um so yeah go for it
don't be shy
oh hands up wow this is very formal yeah
let's do it uh jose
yeah i i didn't know if if any if anyone
else was just
waiting so i i i i love it there's pro
activity let's do it yeah
yeah well uh first uh thank you claudia
and gary for for the instance i just
wanted to know uh which are the
opportunities to bring
new things to the club i'm really into
blockchain and
i would love to to just uh try to build
a little bit
uh things around that topic over there
thank you yeah sure so um one of the
things we do in the club this year was
really build out sort of a strong
fintech vertical um as part of that we
actually did um
several uh boot camp type of sessions uh
instead of blockchain um you know
there's so much scope in that area right
so
uh to really build that out especially
with uh the fintech industry sort of
booming in london as well
so several verticals of the club are
sort of dedicated towards
looking at more applications of
technology topics um
so it's an area called deep tech and we
call that in the club where we really
focus on things like blockchain
crypto other areas more sort of data
analytics type areas etc
so certainly sort of a lot of scope um
uh to get involved there
and yeah um absolutely there's a lot of
opportunity
uh in the school for to do that as well
and jose i would just add like that the
club is so agile so if you have an idea
um you can literally just run with it um
there's just a lot of innovation
and there's just a lot of scope to to
get involved if you're passionate about
something so
um that's something that i really really
like about the club um especially
compared to some of the
other clubs but i'm not gonna name names
great thing uh just a quick follow-up
question um
i i was going through the employment
report the
the last one of the of the school and i
noticed that
there was a lot of people uh as you
mentioned gary uh going into tech
but it it did catch my attention that
the fact that amazon was
like the largest by far um
how uh in in your opinion guys how's the
tag uh this this switch
from a financial uh program to more like
a tech driven program
uh is is being taken is being
taken by the market and and how do you
and which opportunities do you see in
the
uh work wise for for the lbs students
yeah so uh and honestly you know this is
exactly the question that that i've been
working on for the past
two years uh so a great question um i
think yeah so amazon tends to be the top
employer purely because they have a very
structured program
um for both the internship and for
full-time mba
opportunities um the uh employment
report if you look at sort of the
internship
section again uh is slightly skewed by
covet in the sense that only structure
recruitment went ahead
if you look at mba 2022 employment which
uh you guys can't see right now but you
will
be able to see you'll see a much more
broader mix so amazon hired um
you know again like the top employer but
you start to see a lot more broader mix
of companies such as like google
facebook etc um uh all coming in
not only from sort of big tech but also
like the fintech site
uh really sort of uh evolving as well as
other areas of technology in terms of
sort of the startup and the scale-up
space
and so if you look at some of the
careers where our students are going
broadly you know you've got these
structured programs which look at
areas such as product management et
cetera but also
um you've got a lot of folks going to a
role such as um strategy and operations
business development at all of these
companies
and that that tool is really really
growing um and in terms of how
sort of our initiatives have been taken
uh by industry um
uh you know i think that we've obviously
like had a fantastic response
um uh as as as evidenced by
uh sort of the uh switch in sort of the
employment report trends
that we've seen over the last 18 months
or so and what
i'm going to really actually focus on as
an alumni of the school and when i
graduate is really building up
those deeper partnerships with industry
so that there's a broad range of
companies
recruiting onto campus um uh as well
it's worth also noting that uh
employment
um for tech doesn't necessarily have to
be
uh specific to london and we see a lot
of students going into continental
europe so dublin for example hires a lot
of folks actually pretty much the areas
where we do treks
higher are the tech clubs where we hire
sort of lbs students
hence the rationale for going to places
such as dublin new york and silicon
valley
um in particular there but we can talk
more on this in like the career session
where i have
sort of a lot more um info on that one a
bit later as well or feel free to like
reach out
great thank you cool one minute and nine
seconds uh abuela sorry go
go for it yeah there isn't enough time i
think i'll just i'll just ask my
question in the career
um um section as well yeah sure because
i think we actually get kicked out in a
minute so
yeah absolutely so in terms of sort of
next steps so we'll post all
um all the info sort of on meets um
i said claudia and the new leadership
team uh will be sort of interacting with
you
um and uh the way that the club works as
we typically do sort of a massive club
kickoff
once you guys uh are on campus and
that's when those opportunities sort of
become involved either as sort of an
ex-co-member in your first year um
helping out in one of uh
one of some of these initiatives um as
claudia did she applied for sort of the
new york track lead position
but it's also to be clear you don't have
to be like an exca member of the club to
get involved um the club's like free to
join
all the events are open um sort of
everyone um
we're actually going to open up a lot of
events for admits as well
um uh which should be really really uh
exciting um
going forward um so uh with that thanks
so much um
everyone uh for joining and yeah uh
congratulations again on sort of your
lbs offers
and looking forward to staying in touch

Idioma: en

perfect okay great all right let's click
those off as we don't have too long
um welcome everyone a huge
congratulations on your
acceptance to lbs we hope you are
excited
um we know many of you are probably at
different points in your decision
journey but we're just going to be
running through
a quick overview of a brief presentation
on what
web is who we are what we focus on and
um and then really this is time for you
guys to ask us any questions you may
have
so as we're speaking if you have
questions that come up feel free to drop
it into the chat box i think the chat
boxes are open
you know i don't know if you can see it
wasn't in the main room but yeah it is
okay
that's good great yes if you can just
drop your questions on that or if you
want to
um ask it live when when we're done
presenting feel free to put your hand up
and
i'll meet yourself and ask us directly
um
so yeah so to start uh just a quick
intro on myself um so i'm british i
lived in the us half of my life but i
was living back in london
for a number of years before joining lbs
i worked in the digital marketing
industry
pre-mba and um interned
sorry mba 2021 graduating this summer
interned in uh ellie lilly in the
pharmaceutical industry last year and
i'll be joining mckinsey
in the london office this fall i got
involved with webb at the beginning of
my time at lbs came in as an operations
lead on the chief of staff team
i knew it was a club i really wanted to
get involved with uh before i came in
and then i joined as a co-president
along with india
a year ago and we've been running since
early
last year thanks parsha hi everyone i'm
ina um a lot of similarities with parsha
nba 2021 uh joined with
last year as part of the external
relations team i'm canadian but i also
spend a few years
doing my undergrad in the us i was
working for the canadian government
before
the mba spent the summer with being in
the boston office doing consulting
and going back there for full time so
let's go to the next one just so we're
moving along
um so quick thing about what we're
trying to achieve we are here to build a
future of equal opportunities because we
believe in equality
in business but also critically in other
aspects of our lives whether that be
you know our personal lives or even
other career paths web is really here to
kind of facilitate and enable that
future
the next slide we have some numbers as
you can see we are one of the largest
club on campus and we have a very
engaged alumni network
most of the other stats are from
academic year 2019 to 2020
when things were partially normal um but
as you can see there were lots of events
we had our 20th conference in 2020 and
we will share
kind of some of our strategic pivots and
adaptation during pandemic entry slides
great so on this side we just overview
what our key focuses our
focus areas are for the club the first
is on professional growth
so we have a number of teams that are
focused on the various different key
industries that people typically enter
into
post business school at lbs and they put
together events working with various
different corporates to essentially
facilitate with networking getting
support with recruiting into those
industries
um or just hearing about uh with senior
women leaders in those industries and
what their career journey to date has
been
then we have a personal development
focus and we have a large team on this
focus on a few different areas
this will include numbers of different
workshops anything
from how to manage your
personal finances to public speaking
support etc
and then another team within that that's
been working on developing out our first
established mentoring program which just
began being piloted a few months ago so
it's something we hope will be
continuing to grow and be built on
further next year
then we have our community building
pillar which includes our social teams
that put on
social events for students to come
together more of this to come now we're
starting to
come out of the lockdown in the uk and
have the ability to meet back up in
person
and um they've also started piloting a
new big book club community
and then within this as well we also
have our ambassador team which is our
main
male allies and they help to drive
awareness of the
topics that we're focusing on with the
male student body on campus and also
host some
events specifically targeted to them
and then lastly we have our advocacy
pillow which is actually a new
formalized pillow this year within the
club
um we have a seat on the business
schools
diversity and inclusion committee where
we work with the administration of
faculty and our other federality clubs
on driving a number of issues forward
and diversity and inclusion this can be
things from
working to improve um representation of
women within our various different
academic programs
through to how do we improve content
covered in our academics to
have better um better more diverse
representation
this is just a little bit of a snapshot
of some of the teams involved we have
been totally this year 13 teams
these are the key teams that exist
that actually are focused on event
planning each year and
just a little bit of an overview of the
kind of stuff you could potentially get
involved with if you want to assume an
executive committee role next year
so moving on to share a bit more about
our key events
one of them was our with equal
conference so a month and a half ago
we had our 21st conference and this was
a particularly special one because it
was
fully virtual our theme was flattening
the gender curve and the conference team
had done an incredible job
our two-day event featured 62 speakers
with topics ranging from modern
household leading in the new normal
how to be an ally and so much more we
were incredibly humbled by the
discussions and the engagement we had
from
over 900 attendees from across the globe
and then just closing up here's a little
bit of a visual representation of some
of the events we typically hold
um of course given the state of things
this year some of these are from
previous years
um but essentially we have we do a
number of key events each year one of
the first that comes at the beginning of
the year
is um a big barbecue for the nba and mif
programs which we collaborate with
by beyond uh typically so this will be
on old campus in front of the beautiful
sussex building
with lots of activities are going on
another key event which you can see in
my job in the um center at the bottom of
this slide is our quality ball which
is essentially lvs's main winter formal
event
um which we do in collaboration
typically with you and women
it's a it's a fundraiser for them and
kind of a great
um great time to kind of get dressed up
in your finest and go to one of the
great social clubs in london
and then coming through to another key
event of the year you can see there's um
the glittery image with the gold
background with you know myself in there
um this is whip's contribution to tattoo
which you may have had talked about in
some of the other events you've attended
tattoo is one of lbs's biggest social
events of the year
and um really brings together many of
the different clubs on campus
with food stands across across campus
and a big town performance competition
and web participates by hosting a large
roof where you can get
our face painting done and go and kind
of get get dressed up and guess the
theme for it
um so super fun um but yeah as
um we have just under come down to nine
minutes left
i'm gonna close up the presentation now
um but feel free to start popping some
questions
in the in the chat box
or put your hand up and we are happy to
answer
we love getting live questions because
then we feel like we're having a
discussion with you guys but if you're
shy no worries feel free to drop the
question in the chat and also yeah if
you want to just direct like private
message to you know myself as well we
can read those out
so whatever you're comfortable with
sorry i have a question if that's okay
um
first of all i just wanted to mention
that the chat is disabled um
so it might be a little bit difficult
for some to um to ask
um but i noticed one of the slides
mentioned something about consulting but
it was very fast
um so i just wanted to ask a little bit
more about that uh what exactly does
that mean
what would that entail us as an activity
and how could we join they'll be great
thank you
you want me to take this enough sure
cool um
yeah so essentially you of course have
the option to get involved
from a club standpoint with the
consulting club um but within web
we do similar kinds of stuff focused on
partnerships with the various different
consulting firms to put on presentations
and more
um smaller group networking sessions
with those firms
that are catered and the content will be
catered more to a female audience
and focus potentially on issues that
women may struggle with more than men
when it comes to the application process
um yeah thank you very much
chelsea go ahead
hi can you hear me yes okay hi
hi ina and uh um
so i have a question about how does the
woman in business club help you in
pursuing your um
your post mba career track
yeah i want to hear from both of you
thank you so i i thank you for that
question i can get it started and then
parse you can share her experience
um because with is our mandate is very
very
like diverse there's a lot of things
we're trying to cover um
it's not typically associated with a
specific career
in mind so for example if you're very
keen on consulting
a consulting club maybe something of
particular interest that being said
because
we look at you know the broad sector of
business
you are able to make connections with
different firms that you may be
interested in
and overall wave is just a great
experience to develop your leadership
skills and to show that like
this is something that matters greatly
to me and i'm really expanding on my
leadership capabilities by being part of
this club
parsha your thoughts absolutely yeah
just just to add on to that i mean
in terms of the events that we hold um
there'll be things that may help you
specifically within your
target industry that you're recruiting
for but also the personal development
events can be really helpful with
just helping to build on those areas
where you
potentially feel a little weaker weaker
on at the moment and to try and set you
up for success when you're going for
your recruiting cycles or going into
those
um positions as a whole and if you
choose to get involved as an executive
committee member
there's a lot that you can pick roles
that uh
give you an opportunity to get
experience to something maybe you
haven't in the past
professionally and that may carry be
valuable in your future ahead
i think for me um funnily enough one of
the biggest challenges i actually had in
the past was public speaking
and coming in to lead the club arena put
me in a position where i've had to do a
lot of speaking events over the course
of the last year and
um you know remembers the beginning of
the year where i would be
anxious for days before we had to speak
on a panel and
um we i came kind of full circle
by our equal confidence last month when
we were doing the closing notes and i
was actually looking forward to it
something i could never have fathered
beforehand so yeah it really club
involvement's an opportunity to
figure out what you want to go on for
yourself and get those kinds of
experiences
sounds like a good opportunity to grow
your leadership skills
thank you thanks
i haven't been keeping track of the
order of hand raises and they keep
moving around but i think sanskriti
might be might have been next yeah
hi so i'm an early career student and i
wanted to know
since we only have a year how what roles
can we take in the women in business
club and how are we
able to make the most of our time here
because we won't be able to join the
executive co
so what other roles can we take so that
we can make the most of our time
don't want to take that one yeah okay
sure
so all of our junior at school roads are
open to any of the programs
um in terms of our current xcode
composition
we have a number of early careers and
also even
other programs as well that are one year
or year and a half so you can absolutely
get involved the only limitation is in
terms of
running for presidency or for treasury
or
for the senior executive committee
positions it would be challenging just
because there's not that continuity in
terms of the second year but you can get
involved during your first year just
like any other programs
okay thank you thanks
i'm not sure who was next i'm just gonna
go by the order i can see right now
do you want to go yeah i'm audible
yes okay um hi pressure know thank you
for doing this
um yeah my question is about the
uh you know exco roles in the first year
so i
could get sort of got a ringside view in
the equal conference because
i was helping like thomas and i are with
some volunteering work so
just wanted to check how how do you
apply what are the roles in the first
year when does the application open what
is the application process like
cool um i can take this one um so across
the clubs it's quite a structured
process
um you will find in september that most
of the clubs will hold a kickoff session
we can't do it earlier because not all
of the academic programs
start at the same time um and in those
sessions you'll get an overview of what
the clubs will be focusing on for the
year what teams exist and what open
positions they have available
and post that session applications will
open
and for which specifically you can apply
for typically up to five positions
um and put in your order of preference
which one is you're most interested in
then the senior vice presidents of those
teams will
will interview you for based on the
strength of your application
and then if there's a few teams that are
interested in you they'll work with each
other to basically give you your highest
preference
uh position i would just add on to that
web is a very popular club to join as an
executive committee member so i would
recommend
not just applying to one position um if
there are two to three things you'd be
interested in
an application for a few of them
just to add one more thing about that
the way we structure with is that
even though your role might be
specifically for this one vertical
you are always able to kind of raise
ideas and work with other teams to get
things going
so we're very collaborative in that
sense
sorry make sense thank you
great um richard said that correctly do
you want to go
yeah yeah sure uh so i just wanted to
ask like um
you know what is the level of commitment
or engagement that we need to give to
the club on a weekly basis like other
events which take place every week
or is it like you know twice a month
like how does it just work like maybe if
you could give an overview of that
i see candace also lowered her hand so
i'm assuming you guys had the same
question
awesome okay so really good question
really difficult to answer and the
reason for that is what you're involved
in will vary significantly depending on
the team you're part of so if you're
part of one of our careers team for
example whether that be consulting
diversified or
ibp am your your workload is more
manageable because
it's you know one event every few weeks
you're working with the firms actively
so it's
it's fairly well paced if you are part
of the conference team it's completely
different
conference really picks up in december
sometimes there's pre-planning obviously
but it really gets very busy in december
all the way leading up to the merge
conference um so then you are you are
dedicating a lot of your time to that
the beautiful thing is is that your
senior exco will know
what the workload looks like so then
they they'll let you know as well so you
can plan your schedule around it
anything to add porsha just also add i
mean that
because there's so many teams and so
many events happening none of those
if you're an executive committee member
are you required to go to it's very much
what you're interested in when you're
when your schedule allows that there's
no
real commitment in terms of that it's
just for the team that you join
um and then over the course the the
depending on how next year's senior
leadership teams will structure it there
will be some
maybe could have once a month um wider
excava meetings that you can join but
yeah relatively flexible in that sense
we're just about out of time so again um
huge congratulations to all of you we
hope you're excited
i really the first few months of obs was
um
some of the most fun of my life so i'm
very envious of you to all have this
experience ahead of you we're very
excited for you guys

### Retail, Luxury, FMCG @ The Careers Fair - 17 April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCwxAsWRakI

Idioma: en

cool all right so yeah we have some
slides to share with you guys
but this can be as informal or formal as
you want it to be we're happy to just
like answer any questions that anyone
wants
to to hear so feel free to stop us at
any point and we can just get to what
you guys actually want to know
um cool so let's go into this
all right great so hi everyone i'm
tabria leonard co-president of the
retail luxury goods club
grumps you want to just really quickly
enjoy yourself
sure hi guys i'm gamza i'm the other
co-president of the club with tabria
um and we're both nba 2021s
in the same stream actually and
should we do the intro like the proper
intros now or do you want to go over the
club intro first no yeah we can go over
the club intro
um and then we'll let you guys hear a
little bit more about our backgrounds
and our stories
so really quickly retail luxury goods
club is one of the
um largest professional clubs at lbs
um we're really excited about that
because i feel like this is such like a
niche um
i don't know area of interest and so
we're proud of that we have this
community of over 2 500 members
obviously consisting of a lot of alumni
um
and the student body so what we do is
we really aim to um provide all of our
members with industry knowledge career
planning networking opportunities and
community building i can't stress how
much like the networking and community
building part
is really a core part of what we do just
because again
um a lot of the opportunities which
we'll get into later which could be
either structured or
um unstructured really come from
the networking the opportunities that
we're able to provide through the club
but overall we really just want to be a
resource for people who are interested
in these um in these industries in these
sectors
and i think one of the really cool
things about the club
is that it's really dictated by you know
who's
who's managing the club at the time and
so while for gamzee and i a lot of our
focus is on like retail
um digital um and luxury we've actually
just seen like a manifesto from the
upcoming co-presidents and they're
really focused on entrepreneurship
sustainability
so i think the club kind of it holds on
to its core values but it reinvents
itself
over the years based off of what the um
executive committee is really um
interested in driving um so yeah we do a
lot of on campus
well when we could we do both on campus
and off-campus events
um consisting of treks mentorship
opportunities social programs we have a
lot of strong connections with companies
within the uk um and are
constantly broadening that base and
um yeah so that's a little bit about us
if anyone again has any questions
do feel free to stop us but we'll go
into our backgrounds
so i'm tabria again i'm from the us mba
2021
um i've always worked in retail and
luxury so i used to
do sourcing for tjx um and then went
into buying
at bloomingdale's in new york and my
goal for the mba was really to pursue
retail luxury from a more global and
strategic point of view so
and again you'll see a lot of us have
very similar profiles because we come
into lbs and we're all interested in the
same thing so like
guns and i are both in walpole um if
anyone has wallpaper questions we're
happy to answer that's something
specifically for luxury that you apply
into once you get into lbs
um so we're both wallpaw members we both
take luxury strategy brand management
we like to take opportunities to you
know
curate the curriculum so with london cap
um i ended up working with fresco bowl
karaoke
which is a luxury swimmer brand but
again there's opportunities for you to
use the curriculum to do what you want
to do um i know
the london cap first years are working
on really cool projects around like
retail
with google um unilever i believe
so yeah really interesting projects
there um i didn't do a traditional
summer internship just because
of kovid and i didn't like find any
opportunities that i wanted so i
front loaded took a lot of electives to
make my second year very free
and i ended up working with farfetch on
their open innovation team from december
to march i'm actually still working with
them on a part-time basis
um have not figured out where i'm going
yet after the nba full-time but
soon come and in my first year i was
just the berlin trek officer
i'm really big on like global um just
like curiosity and understanding what
other cultures and how they approach
retail
and i'm also really involved um on
linkedin
so that's a little bit about me i'll let
gom to introduce myself
sure so actually i do have a lot of
similar backgrounds to ebria i think
the pretty much the only difference is
that i was on
sort of the marketing branding and event
planning brand partnership
side of the industry before joining lbs
and i think i'm still very much
interested in sort of brand management
digital luxury sort of like where luxury
meets the digital spaces and creating
experiences
based out of different digital tools
and sorry by the way i was just like
literally i'm in a forest because i
could not take the city anymore hence my
background
um but anyways and i'm basically i did
an internship over the summer at amazon
which is where i'll be going after um
after completing my mba
and yeah and i think i'm just working on
gaining some technical skills and then
returning to fashion
from a digital angle eventually
yeah that's a little bit about me other
than that yeah pretty much like
everything he looks like
waffle and a lot of very similar stuff
so i won't repeat it
yeah sorry guys also a key point of view
is to run with like
run for co-presidency with somebody that
you really get along with so
that's how that happened um but in terms
of what the club does to support careers
i think
there are four really important things
so we talked about events
um and we have our annual
luxury goods conference that we hold
where about maybe 200 plus
attendees come just to hear speakers um
get their view on a specific theme so
last year our theme was sustainability
um this year what was our theme this
year
did i lose it um okay i'm sorry sorry
here we go um no this year it was kind
of post covered
but from a customer centricity angle
yeah so gamzer runs the luxury goods
conference that was her contribution in
the first year and she like oversees all
that so sorry guys
i don't know what our own conference is
about shame on me um
but a really good conference obviously
was virtual this year but
um i think it's like it's a signature
signature piece of the club and a lot of
people are really excited in getting
involved and helping to secure the
speakers for that
um we secure speakers like um someone
from
ebay some want people from depop that's
your collective i think the really good
thing is we have a good balance of
bringing in traditional companies
um as well as like some of the more
emerging disruptive business models as
well
so um yeah that's a little bit about our
conference international trucks which i
oversee
um we typically do paris milan and this
year
um we introduced a picture-owned truck
so we have two people who
let me just check on our time too sorry
well i'm chatting away okay 11 minutes
um so we had two people come in and we
have now a new york trek that's
really interesting and we have an africa
trek in collaboration with the tech and
media club
and the um africa club and so that's
exciting that's more so focused on the
retail angle
um we have like a b and bev as part of
it um
based on like companies that they're
working with um in africa so anyway
um a lot of opportunities to just like
explore retail luxury from a global
perspective which is really exciting to
me
um we work closely with uh the luxury
strategy professor so stefano over the
summer
um we came up with a luxury strategy
series um bringing in new speakers and
continuing the conversation
outside of the school year which was
really fun um we collaborate a lot with
him and aleona from the diversified
careers sector
so there's a lot of opportunity to
engage with
both faculty and staff as part of the
club and what we do
networking network and networking can't
stress how important that is
so we actually are part of a consortium
of
retail and luxury goods clubs from
across europe so there's insead hec
bocconi assade and more and we
collaborate on hosting signature events
but also
sharing events and opportunities within
our groups which has been really good
because i think when you come here you
kind of want to understand the european
perspective in general and that's really
helpful to do that
and while lbs is not really lbs is i
think a business school that has
allows you to you know figure out what
your interests are engage in those
different interests but we don't have a
specific focus on retail and luxury so
it allows us
allows us to capitalize on some of the
opportunities that other schools have
um we just launched our first
international case competition with
pangaea if you guys don't know what
kangaia is it's a really
um cool interesting sustainable brand
that's just doing a lot with like
technology and how they approach
materials for product
um and so we have a case competition
running with them which we've invited
and opened up to our european network
um and that's really exciting and then
we partner with walpole
to try to um understand how we can
connect and collaborate so they like
contribute to our conference
we're trying to set up like consulting
projects through the luxury
um community and we're just capitalizing
off of the relationships that we do have
and trying to expand
it is part of the club's goals um gums
you want to talk about mentorship and
career resources
sure so for the mentorship basically i
think we would really urge you guys if
you're interested in the industry to
join the exco of the retail luxury club
because each expo member gets paired up
with a mentor
from uh with someone who basically is an
lbs alumni
and who works in an industry within
retail or luxury
that most closely resembles your own so
it's a really great way to you know able
to network in london but also have
someone to sort of
discuss ideas and sort of um you know
even do resume checks or you know they
can connect you with people
i know for example you know tabria's has
like
the most perfect relationship with her
mentor um so it's definitely
is an incredible opportunity to have
that no one else
besides the expo members currently have
and then
for the career resources this is
something that we really started
more cracking down on this year and it's
basically
obviously there is like not a lot but
some of us that have worked in the
industry before
so we want to take everyone who does
have industry experience and our current
students
to then kind of give back to our
community whether that's through
like doing panels to share experiences
whether that's you know doing interview
prep
and mock prep um before
any applications are due and also like
resume checks to make sure
because sometimes retail and luxury
companies have a different expectation
than
a consulting or a big tech resume so
just sort of having someone that is a
peer
to kind of look over and just provide
these resources
to the entire community yeah i think one
of the big things to come out of
covid is just the school has gotten
extremely collaborative
as a result of it and as a result of all
of us trying to do virtual
activities at the same time and so i
feel like this year we've collaborated
with
um the design and innovation club
entrepreneurship the italian club
so it's like it's really an opportunity
to
again shape the experience that you want
um
that's really all we have i think from
you guys on our end obviously like feel
free to follow us on
linkedin on instagram we have a website
as well
but we'd love to hear from you guys what
your thoughts are what you're interested
in what you're worried about like happy
to use this last
six minutes to just talk to talk through
anything so if anyone has any specific
questions or just like
wants us to elaborate on something feel
free to just unmute yourself and speak
up
no ok
if i hope i'm pronouncing it correctly
um
i am adiraj i'm from india and i
actually have a
question um so of course you know gone
through
a lot of the material that's there on
the website and the brochures and
everything and
you know a lot of what you also said
sort of circles more or
around retail and luxury right
but when i saw the invite for the
program it obviously
mentions retail luxury and fmcg right so
i just want to know
like more about um what what's what's
the thing
with fmcg right because even in the
employment report of course there's more
focus
um say on an on amazon which would
probably qualify as retail
and on luxury players like burberry
right
uh but you know i would i would i would
be interested to know what's
what's the scene with um you know your
traditional fmcg is like a nestle or a
unilever
uh abn bev i know a bit about but i'll
be happy to know
more about the others yeah i mean i
think that's a direct reflection of
one the interest of the students but
also to the the really
core relationships that lbs has and as
well as who recruits from lbs so
because ada does have a structured
program and they recruit from us you'll
kind of see more information about that
um to my knowledge unilever does not
like um nestle does not some of the core
kind of you know fmcg people that you
mentioned
does that mean that we don't have alumni
in those places and that there aren't
events or things that relate to it no
um i do think maybe marketing club does
have some closer ties to some of those
organizations
but i think that's when the networking
piece comes really into play because
we won't have some of those structured
opportunities so what really our goal is
to like match people with their
interests and really get them engaged
with the alumni who can
help them um transition into those to
those spaces so yeah i think again
it's because of the student body
interest and the relationships that we
have but it's not
it's not impossible to get you um what
you want if you're if you raise your
hand and say hey i'm interested in this
like how do i get here
got it yeah and i think that's helpful
so my my background is completely in
consuming detail i've been at mckinsey
for more than four years and
that's primarily what i've done uh at
mckinsey in india right
so that's something that i'm looking
forward to doing rather than going
through
you know the conventional path of just
doing consulting
post my mba i'm wanting to sort of get
into the industry and get my sort of
uh enroll grow up my sleeves and get my
hands dirty i guess
so my advice to you would be like from
day one figure out who these like who
the people in the
lbs community are that can kind of help
you with that and start to build a
relationship from day one
um i think again like we have this
mentorship program
and my mentor happens to be at farfetch
and it's no surprise that like i ended
up at farfetch but that was because like
we had
months of like building up relationships
and i think one mistake that people make
is they wait till
it's like recruitment time to start like
reaching out and networking
and at that time you can't you can meet
with people and they'll
probably speak to you but it doesn't
they don't really understand who you are
and what value you bring but i think
building that relationship over the time
from september on
um is really some of the key things that
um work and i know a lot of first years
who reached out to me like as soon as
they started and now they're like always
in my inbox about different things that
they want and i'm connecting them left
and right but i do it because
um we've been they've invested that
relationship and we're there versus like
people who come to me
in march and if i'm super busy i'm like
i'm probably not going to prioritize you
but you know what i mean my advice is
just like get started right away
um and share your story share your
interests with people
because you never know like who knows
who or like what's going to come about
so yeah share your story often
and get get in touch
got it great thanks so much thank you
serbia i know you have a question if i
hopefully i pronounce your name
correctly
hi so i have um two questions actually
uh could you please
uh firstly just uh give me a little bit
more information about the wallpaper
program
what it's like why i mean what the um
yeah just basically i've
just heard of it a lot just don't really
know what it is
yeah um gums i'll take it so walpole
is a um it's a program it's called
luxury leaders of tamar program and it's
a collaboration between
lbs and walpole so walpole is like an
association maybe that's not the correct
title but it's a it's a it's an
organization in london
that supports all things like british
heritage and luxury it's across all
sectors so it's like hospitality
automobiles obviously fashion and
accessories but really covers the entire
gamut
and that organization partners with lbs
to provide a select group of students
who apply into it
with a mentor and intimate master
classes
so you have there are 16 of us in our
class
from the and it's across all programs i
think maybe except for like
the masters in finance program but it's
definitely like mba
um masters in management masters in
analytics
management whatever ma'am stands for um
but yeah it covers those programs they
can apply into it
and you get the 16 of you get to have
like one on
one to 16 sessions with some of these
speakers it's a network opportunity
um and then you have your mentor so my
mentor you get your mentor based off of
what your interests are
if they can fulfill it so again i'm
interested in like retail and luxury
retail experience and so my mentor was
someone at harrods
um and you just you're it's they give
you the mentor but it's up to you to
manage that relationship
and um yeah my mentor was great she kind
of helped me frame out like my summer
and how i thought about that
how i thought about things and she asked
me like what are the specific things we
want out of this relationship and let's
work towards that
so she's still someone that i'm like not
actively engaged with on a monthly basis
now because that's no longer the
relationship but it's more like
if you need anything keep in touch stay
in touch so yeah
it's the main things are the mentor the
the master classes and then the
community that you build right you know
that you have these 15 other students
that are also interested in luxury
um and so we try to build like community
within ourselves as well
so that is specifically for um the
luxury sector not like retail and fmcg
yes
that is the one thing that's like luxury
only and that's the hard
like you can't get that
yeah but it's not just fashion luxury i
would say like it goes literally from
luxury knives to luxury cars to luxury
hotel chains
so it's the full spectrum of luxury

### Out in Business Club @ The Clubs Fair - 16 April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHd6Co6BITo

Idioma: en

brilliant excellent so um
welcome to the session um so my name is
faris ahmad i'm one of the
senior ex ghosts on the uh out in
business club at lbs
um i am an mba 2022 and currently sort
of
finishing my first year going into my
second year sort of thing um
so just very quick overview i don't want
to you know do too much on the
presentation side of things but i
thought it'd be helpful to put into
context of the actual club itself
and so that you can sort of you know
have have an overview
um so the out and business club um
we were founded in 1996 uh we've got a
few
figures out there around you know we've
got about a thousand five
fifty plus members across the board and
this was from when we started so of
course we count our
alums as well part of that however on a
year-to-year basis
as you can see we we're now around 49
active members
in the last academic year um
and this is a club that's obviously open
across the board so from our early
careers right up to our mbas and
executive programs as well
um and really that sort of you know this
is sort of a club which is not really
perfect you know it's not really a
professional club it's not it's not a
sports club obviously it's just
basically we we cover everything sort of
around the lgbtq plus
uh progression advancement etc so we
cover a few things we've got
professional events we do social events
we do things on the community side of
things and we work a lot with our
employers and sponsors as well
so a wide variety of things that happens
there we do lots of club collaborations
with other clubs as well for example
with the consulting club
or the tech and media club etc and
the idea is obviously to have the lgbtq
plus representation
um like i said i'm probably going to
whisper quite quickly but
essentially you know as i mentioned
earlier these are the different type of
companies that we work with
uh around um you know in terms of uh
employers uh throughout the year so as
you can see some some of the bigger
you know biggest names in their sectors
but also some of the smaller ones
uh that you might never have heard of uh
or startups
uh things that we've done like i said
earlier this are some of our
uh social events so we had you know
coming out week where
people who felt comfortable to come out
and wanted to share their stories
or have come out and wanted to share
their stories we encourage them to do so
in a safe environment we have a lot of
allies that take part for example the
football club
you can see here uh you know they they
also supported our event uh on coming
out week
uh again we've got white party tattoo
being our biggest um
essay event in the year obviously
because of kobe we haven't had that but
uh this some of these pictures are
actually from the year before um
so moving on to some of the other stuff
that we do ask the club
uh we've got a retreat again this was
not last year's picture because of covet
but
naturally hopefully when things are
opening up you know we'll have a a
a better sort of sense of um
social events etc we've got a lot of
meet-ups um
and you know events uh going out night
clubs and stuff like that
just last year was a bit funny so we had
a lot of social events on zoom
but hopefully we can we can revert back
to more
normal um social scene uh
in the coming year uh just to call out
our biggest event of the year
is you're out some of you might have
heard about it it's basically a
business or student-led business
conference
um this was last year's showcase we had
we celebrated 10 years of europe and it
was delivered virtually of course like
with everything else in the coveted
world
um and we have a lot of uh
representation in there from uh from
our employers our sponsors our partner
schools and of course you know students
that are
within the lbs community and and and
beyond
so just to show you a bit of showcase of
the type of you know
partner schools that we work with for
your out there across the world
we're expanding that last year was a
good opportunity to do that just because
it was um
virtual so we hope to build on that
somewhat this year and see how we can
deliver that we don't know yet how
europe's going to pan out this year
whether virtual or not
but we're all working very hard to to
come to sort of some sort of
decision uh i've already gone through
this i'm gonna
very quickly go to that uh these are
just uh a showcase of some of the sample
speakers so
you know if you look at the uh down the
top left the ceo of barry's
we've got a partner from bcg um
our dean was speaking there so just a
showcase of of different travel speakers
that we've got
uh at europe uh we're hoping to do
europe again in november this year
sometime
uh but uh yeah we'll see we'll we'll you
know
spread down some of the decisions nearer
to time um this is the wonderful team
behind
uh oib and you're out this year work
really tirelessly
we had loads of fun working with each
other it's weird to to call out that
some of us haven't actually met in
person because of coving and we've been
working virtually
but we've been working really well with
it with each other so just to let you
know how
how great that oib family is
these are some of our social media uh
handles and our email where you want to
get in touch with us uh we'll always
be open for you know to talk to you guys
on whatever that you want to get
involved with the club
or you know for example if you go on to
do you know to different clubs and you
want to collab with us that's
absolutely fine and great and then
finally just to sort of go in terms of
what we do as a club like
what we're currently working at the
moment we we engage with difficulty
so lots of uh the you know programs at
lbs will have an element of
you know um things like um
organizational behavior for example and
we try and work towards that we try to
formulate some of the
input to this so for example we've
launched an lgbtq plus executive
education program
so that we've worked with difficulty on
this
um and we we work with rombo if some of
you have heard this is the
mba sort of global fellowship
um movement uh we work with them again
we've got an award at lbs i believe it's
for mba i can't be 100 sure
but i think we also launched recently
the early careers uh scholarship as well
which i'm not sure whether the deadline
has passed but but
just to let you know things that we work
behind the scenes with the school to try
and
uh progress the lgbtq plus um sorry one
second
um how can you help us uh essentially
first and foremost join us so it's as
simple as joining on
so when once you get on board into the
whole systems and that's the system got
campus groups
uh essentially that's your first point
of um
call you join us by clicking join us
there's no fees for oib
uh so essentially we welcome lgbtq plus
uh individuals who identify as starch
who may not be comfortable
uh identifying as such but might be from
the community or just great allies so we
don't really at the moment we don't
classify
who who's who's whom we welcome everyone
um
again we are who we are because of our
network
so of course if you come from uh you
know how can you add value for example
you've worked with uh with the large
uh organization and you've got context
that you you think might be
you know it can work with us bring that
to the table that always helps
uh come to our events uh we do lots of
career events we do lots of social
events
so do come to them they're very much
focused for the community
and and they're there as a platform to
help you achieve whatever that you're
seeking to achieve
during business school uh and finally
our ally ship
uh group is really great we've got
massive massive representation of allies
uh within oib
and i think you know without them we
won't be able to progress that in things
that we've been working very hard with
so
again allies are extremely important to
us and therefore
um we welcome all allies as well so
that's sort of sort of
very fast sort of overview i know i'm
sort of slightly overtime

### Football Club @ The Clubs Fair - 17th April 2021
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upSaOdtoKNg

Idioma: en

perfect
yeah so um for those guys who just um
joining the record session um
it's maddie and uh philip from the
football club
um we're going to give you a short
introduction um
we have yeah basically this is our value
proposition
we are one of the largest um clubs on
the campus and for sure the largest
sports club
we have men's and women's football club
together over 200 paying members
yeah this also gives a lot of
opportunities to network and
grow really together as a team and from
my experience in the last two years
yeah you make a lot of friends close
relationships and
it's a fantastic opportunity to connect
to your fellow mates not only
from the same program also from other
programs so we
have a quite diverse mix even between
embas
also partners eminems mbas and so on
um of course um for a lot of people
really important you will have
you you will study a lot you will do a
lot of career networking and it's
and it's such a great thing in the
meantime um also to stay fit
and uh yeah physically um
yeah on your top um and of course as a
club
um we're trying to give you as many
opportunities as possible to participate
in events
also esports events we we're organizing
tracks tournaments
or just a classic football evening
but more about that in the slides we're
still classically divided between
like men's and women's football team
however
we making events and so on and trainings
accessible for both teams and yeah
growing growing together next slide
please
perfect so we have activities on the
pitch um
we do two trainings at the moment on
tuesdays and thursdays
it happens in regents park which is very
very convenient especially for those
living near campus
it's a grass pitch and such
such nice to break out of the classic
city life in into
into a park and play there we also try
to have the same
trainings at the same time between
angels which is the women's team and
um the demons and devils which is the
men's team um
we also participate in the so-called
lafl this is a london accountants
football league it's official
fa league every sunday
we have two teams participating in two
different leagues
we had our first two after the short
corona break
last weekend which we both won which was
fantastic
and now we're going to play until yeah
june to end the season and the cup
tournaments
we also have um yeah tournaments in
in place which is a uk tournament
happening happening in june
and also participate on the embed and
iese
which is in basically the biggest
tournaments in paris and
barcelona then to the activities of the
pitch
um for many of our members most
importantly because
it it doesn't really matter how good you
are at football
um you can you can participate in the
club um
just if you have yeah just if you like
the sports or like being with the team
we have a lot of events like pup crawls
um
soon it's the interstream tournament
coming so every stream builds a team and
we play against each other
was quite a highlight for me we have
also career events ongoing
one example is we do we did a game
against kpmg
also recently we played against
the dentist association in the uk
so there's like uh yeah you have a lot
of opportunities to
to to yeah to meet people outside
of campus um we also have international
tracks
um to be honest in the corona time it
was pretty
uh yeah pretty impossible to do so
and uh before that we had treks to um
within the uk but also to romania so
that picture there's
from romania which was a fantastic
weekend
um and with the membership comes also a
lot of equipment so if you want to gear
up and
show everyone your participation in the
club you will have a lot of
opportunities
um with your membership fee you will
come a kit
we have opportunities to purchase track
suits
and so on um yeah you will see a lot of
people
walking around campus with our
logo on it and
yeah i think i think maddie i talked i
talked a lot right now
um yeah
go over the women's club um we're a bit
smaller than the men's
but still works out great we're able to
practice
twice a week in regions park same area
as the guys
do about 90 minutes on usually monday
and thursday we're really flexible with
everyone's schedules depending on
classes
and normally we do a five-a-side weekday
league as well
where we play other teams throughout
london
this year has been a little rocky
obviously but we're trying to get that
started up again
and yeah like you said we include
all students partners of students
sometimes we have some lbs staff
we have alumni that stop by occasionally
so it's a lot of fun and you make really
a lot of really great connections as
well
the member fees are about 100 pounds for
new members and that includes a really
cool
nike bag and jersey with your name on it
and returning members
as only 70 pounds so
yeah i think that's about it for the
women's and then we go on all the tracks
as well normally
but phil already went over all of that
so i guess we'll just take your
questions if anyone has any just feel
free to
raise your hand
yeah there's a question
hi i hope i pronounced your name right
i'm sorry yeah you got it far on
uh sorry i might have missed this but
what was the membership fees for the
men's club
so i didn't put it on the on this slide
right now because
um it is kind of like um a decision to
be made by the next expo team
um which will soon soon be announced but
normally it's around
um yeah north of 150
south of 200 pounds for the year but
again this includes um the kit itself um
you're gonna have uh
yeah we have we have to pay for all the
pitches um pitch rental is quite
um expensive as well the club itself is
not doing profit so it's always
calculating a way to
cover the costs and uh
yeah i think it answers your yeah
absolutely
sorry just a follow-up you mentioned
that that they're two leagues and and
they're two teams that play
so yes is there like a how do you decide
which team would the person be playing
for
so um like
at the moment due to corona we had for
the trainings and for the games people
to let
sign up um in order to track them and so
on but generally
you just sign up for a weekend game
if we have more people signing up then
we can cover in the teams because
the rules in the league allow 14 players
per team to play on a sunday
then we just try to kind of harmonize it
over
the weeks so so people get the chance to
play
um of course we have a we have quite a
core of like six to seven players
per team which are kind of like um yeah
participating every week every training
so
we're keeping the call there but but
there's a lot of people like making the
first games every weekend
um yeah we we try to include everyone
it's not about like if you're good you
don't play it's more about
if you come to the training and it
doesn't matter how good you are you will
get your chance to play and
it works out really well um from my
point of view
thank you so much yeah how about the the
women's team maddie
do you do a big selection yeah it's
pretty similar it's
really just all skill levels we have
people that have been playing their
entire lives to people who just want to
get out there and
learn the game so it's definitely more
for fun rather than super competitive
but
i think if you want to be more committed
and join the five aside league as well
you can up your level if you if you want
to it's kind of
up to you and like how much you want to
commit to the to the team and how much
time you have as well
yeah um there's one more question ahmed
hi i think you actually answered it i
was just gonna ask like let's say i'm
not very good
and i want to play i just need to
basically show up the trainings and
i'll get a chance to play on the sunday
games right find correctly
yeah that that makes it makes it yeah
that's right
um i think like like a lot of people
especially last year they they came
in and said like i'm not good and so on
like we are we are not like super good
there are some players which are
which which have a high level but um
yeah it just makes uh makes it more fun
if we all play together and yeah
we also see a lot of players improving a
lot
especially on the physical side yeah all
right jamie
your turn hi philip um i've got
one question for you and maddie i've got
a question for you as well um
philip it sounds like the format of the
games are eleven aside are there any
five side games for the men's
um for the man's not um we have uh
yeah we're participating in 11 a side
league and
um also during the trainings we
concentrate on 11 side we sometimes have
like kind of training games where we
over the whole 90 minutes of training
do a little tournament for ourselves we
kind of fight aside on the pitch
but um a lot of players are not used to
play 11 aside and
we kind of want them to get used to it
during the week
and it's a little bit a transition
period you have to go through i would
say like a few times and then
you're getting used to it and you're
going to love it um yeah
just have to run a little bit more cool
thanks phillip and maddie my question to
you is my partner's moving
to the uk with me um but she's not going
to lvs she's going to oxford
um would she be able to join or like
what's the policy on this
absolutely uh we take all partners and
we're just happy to
get more girls out on the pitch so she'd
definitely be welcome
cool and and maybe kind of relates to
that are there any mixed leagues in
london
is that is that a thing uh
i'm not sure actually i don't i don't
think we do it normally but
i'm not sure like for instance when we
do our industry in tournament
um then we do mixed teams so you have
you need to have at least a certain
number of men and women in the team
um but we don't have mixed teams in that
way
i guess jamie your chance to play um
with your partner will be uh during an
interstream tournament
or during the training oh
awesome thank you yes yeah you're
welcome enjoy
thank you thanks okay thank you
um i wanted to ask whether you put into
consideration those
um those doing part-time because if you
say
you're doing the training like two hours
a week um
because um those who are in the
part-time um
um stuff would be only available like
during the weekends
so how do you do that so
for the the girls we normally we have a
group
chat that we try and go around
everyone's schedules to make it
as available as we can so we can get as
many people to show up
um but trainings are normally during the
week
just because there's just more
availability for
everyone across the board but we do have
the games on weekends and the five aside
league as well
and a lot of times people just go out
and play pickup games as well on the
weekends so you'll still have
a lot of the opportunity to get out
there
okay yeah and i guess the same question
someone applies for menace well
we have also some part-time
players and um to be honest it's quite
hard for them to join the training
it does not like we of course consider
that if it comes to the selection for
the weekend
but they usually have a little bit less
opportunity to join during the week
even one example is that regents park
doesn't have
the flooding lights or the lights
in winter so we kind of limited there
in the timing couldn't do it at eight
for instance
but sometimes especially our events are
usually in the evening
and therefore also accessible for
part-time members
if you look to the to the screen in the
background you see
you see a few pictures if you look to
the one in the middle on the bottom
uh you see for instance our esports
tournament
um like a fifa tournament which we made
last year
um played in a in a lecture hall
and uh had six screens with um with
three
playstations three groups and uh yeah
our final then was
in the lbs close pub um we had uh
50 60 people in a small room looking on
a
on a screen and uh watching the final
teams playing and
uh yeah it was a was a great event
all right we have um
[Music]
bearing i do
you muted hi phillip mary thanks for the
presentation
um i just had a two questions the first
one i know of course last year
covered it wasn't normal season but
phillip for the men's league you said
it's a fa regulated league how many
matches is it
for the normal season and then the
second question was just on
i mean i'm an avid fantasy football uh
player i've been playing it for like 10
years out competitive is your
fpl league are they prizes or
is it something we can maybe do in the
future
um what was the second question again
can you please
uh the second question is just on the
your fantasy premier league i know you
mentioned it i said is it quite
competitive are there any prizes
there's something that um we can maybe
set up for the future i'm joining i need
this um
august yeah okay okay got it got it okay
yeah um first question
um okay it's just 60 seconds i'm going
to ask a very quick
answer very quick so um eight teams
in one league 12 teams in the other
league and there's a cup mode as well
in total we come to 20 24 games
depending on how far you go in the cup
um second question
we have a fantasy premier league the
winner gets
i'm not sure like a voucher some price
level 100 pounds
it's ongoing right now a lot of people
competing and uh
yeah you you're happy to to join and
maybe
organize it next year if you want okay
awesome thanks i think we're dropping
out soon
um i hope you all make the right
decision come to lbs
and uh i'm going to see you in the
football club as well maddie and maybe
looking forward
maybe i hope i'll get you to know all of
you
when i join the alumni team which we're
playing against as well
yeah thank you guys for coming and
