### An Immersive Multimedia Experience of the Haudenosaunee Creation Story by Jackson 2bears
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sve_YYTXXEk

Idioma: en

I've always been told that
our stories themselves
are living things and that
there's no specific or one way
to tell any of our stories.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
My name is Jackson 2bears,
and I'm from the Six Nations
of the Grand River territory.
I'm an artist primarily
working in multi-media, video,
installation, and
sound, and more
recently, with AI to develop
more interactive environments
to tell our Haudenosaunee
stories in new ways.
The project I presented was called
Ne:Kahwistará:ken Kanónhsa’kówa í:se Onkwehonwe,
which loosely translates as
a big house for the people.
Longhouses aren't structures.
They're not the materials
they're made out of.
They're not-- they
are necessarily.
They're about the people,
the Haudenosaunee people.
And it's about our
creative cultural practices
in that space that
make it a sacred place.
A lot of our teachings are
connected to particular places
and locations.
And so at a certain
point in the project,
we were trying to develop a
VR version of a longhouse.
Unfortunately, after we got
a fair ways in the process,
after 3D scanning
this longhouse,
the one in our
community burned down.
Point that project
kind of shifted,
looking to a different kind
of way to approach the way
we wanted to tell the story.
He had initially thought he
would be projection mapping
onto the real longhouse that
unfortunately burned down.
So I think he took those assets
and inverted them and made them
in--
you're inside it
instead of outside it.
And it surrounds you.
The idea was to have a large
audio-visual experience
projected around
you but in a space
where you can be
with others as well.
Basically, the
installation that Jackson
brought to Thru the Red Door
is a life-size virtual world
that represented a lot
of traditional stories
from our community.
It just opened up,
and in every direction
there was something
beautiful that you could
see for how amazing it was.
The Sky Woman Haudenosaunee
creation story,
but writ large
across many screens
and working collectively with
many storytellers, dancers,
singers, drummers
in the community.
I think it does take
these experimental methods
of storytelling
and communication
to give Indigenous people and
multicultural people worldwide
the space that they need to
properly and effectively convey
the value of such work, why we
need to gather as a community,
why we need to come together
and heal collectively
and generations.
And I think that Jackson 2bears'
work is a great example of that.
And he really brought the
room together and brought
our students together as well.
I think it could be said
that Haudenosaunee people
or Onkwehón:we Indigenous
people have a holistic approach
to the way we think about
the world and ourselves
and our place in the world.
And so I'm seeing that
reflected here at this school.
But now it's about astrophysics
and all these other really
interesting fields
that are approached.
I found my time here
at MIT really rewarding
working with a number of
Indigenous faculty and students.
Pleasantly surprised to see that
the interdisciplinary research
that was happening here, which
really resonates with me.
I come from a very
interdisciplinary,
artistic but
academic background,
which for me had
always resonated
with how Haudenosaunee
people think about knowledge
and creative practice.
This particular gathering and
presentation by Jackson 2bears
was incredibly important and
really eye-opening for a lot
of our community members in a
way where we can share stories,
a way we can share experiences,
and a way in which we can
imagine futures together,
whether it be virtually
or whether it be in person.
It is a great opportunity
for artists and scholars
to learn about new
technologies, but also, it's
an incredible opportunity
for the community here at MIT
to learn about Indigenous
ways of knowing and what
and how technologies,
science, and our whole mission
and what we're doing in terms of
production of knowledge might--
how it might look different
through an Indigenous lens.
This project was
really the result
of working with Two Row
Media and great folks at Thru
the RedDoor in my community,
with great support from the
the Council for the Arts,
CAST, and the Co-Creation Studio
at MIT.
And of course, the
dancers and drummers,
youth are storytellers
that came out
to not only support
us but also contribute
to the project in
really significant ways.
It really was a project
made with an in community.
I couldn't have been
happier about how it.
And I'm really excited about
where I see this project going
in the future.

### Coordinate Systems and Unit Vectors in 1D
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNTpHqtdoR4

Idioma: en

[MUSIC PLAYING]
PETER DOURMASHKIN:
We would now like
to begin our analysis of motion.
And we'll start with
one-dimensional motion.
Let's just consider a
person running along a road.
And so here's our runner,
and here's our road.
And what we want to do
is be able to describe
the position, the velocity, the
acceleration of this runner.
In order to do that, we need
our first mathematical tool,
which is a coordinate system.
What is a coordinate system?
Well, the first thing that we
want to choose is an origin.
We can pick the origin
anywhere we want.
That's a degree of freedom.
So let's choose a point
along our road as our origin.
The next thing to do
is to choose an axis.
Well, the road is
naturally defining
an axis for our problem, and
so we'll call this the x-axis.
Now along with that axis,
we want to divide that up
into some type of units.
So we might divide
our axis like this.
And what's important
here is to introduce
a positive coordinate direction.
And so the way I'll do that
is I'll call this the plus x,
and on this side of the
origin, x is negative.
Now, the third most
important thing
is that we're going to talk
about vectors and physics.
So we want a choice
of unit vector.
Now because it's only
one-dimensional motion,
we only need one unit vector.
So what that means is a choice
of unit vector at every point.
Let's just consider
a point here, P1.
So our unit vector,
I'll call it I hat 1.
Now let's pick
another point here.
We'll call this the point P2.
And over here, we'll choose
a unit vector, I hat 2.
So every single point in
space has a unit vector.
Now what's unique about
this one-dimensional linear
Cartesian coordinate
system is the following.
These unit vectors have
the same magnitude.
A unit vector by
definition has magnitude 1.
And they're pointing
in the same direction.
So if two vectors have
the same magnitude
and point in the same
direction, they're equal.
So what makes this
coordinate system unique?
This Cartesian coordinate system
that at every single point,
no matter where we are,
the unit vectors point
in the positive
direction because they
have the same magnitude
and direction.
All of these unit
vectors are equal.
And we call that I hat.
So symbolically, we
may draw a picture
and indicate our unit vector
in the positive x direction.
And this is our
coordinate system.
And we can next
begin to describe
the position and the
velocity of our object
as it's moving along
this x direction.

[MUSIC PLAYING]
[TURNTABLE SCRATCHING]
What up, y'all?
This is DJ Rob Swift, straight
from New York City, Queens,
here in the streets of
Cambridge, Massachusetts,
having fun at MIT.
[TURNTABLE SCRATCHING]
MIT invited
me to teach a two week workshop
on six fundamental scratches.
The foundation of all
scratch techniques.
A lot of these techniques
took months, years to develop
and the students that
took this class were just
so excited and motivated
that they learned everything
in a day.
And over the course
of the workshop,
they just practiced to
master the techniques.
I myself, in general, have
just devoted my life's work
to teaching the art of DJing
to anyone that wants to learn.
MIT being a progressive
school that it
has provided this
opportunity for me
to teach the students
here about DJing,
and not just the techniques
involved, you know,
moving a record back and forth,
but the culture and the history
behind it.
You can go on YouTube and watch
a quick five minute tutorial
but not have context on how rich
the history is behind this art
form.
And I'm just super
grateful and glad that we
get to bring something
like this to MIT.

### Energy Harvesting Combat Boot with GPS
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKZBIOOUVWY

Idioma: en

[WAVES CRASHING]
With every step we
take we are at least
about 10 joules of energy.
We have asked ourselves, if
just a fraction of this power
could be harvested,
how could it be used?
As a Tank Commander, I work very
closely with armored infantry.
Hence, it is important
for me to know
the location of the troops,
for the purpose of safety
and strategy.
This combat boot is designed
to release GPS coordinates,
and is powered just by walking.
Three rubber lungs embedded
in the sole of the boot
breathe in and out
with every step.
Their position is
optimized to contact
pressure points of the
foot for maximum efficiency
and sequential
compression of the lungs.
A miniaturized turbine
system produces electricity
from this airflow.
The turbine
enclosure is designed
to accept flow from
opposite directions,
while rotating continuously
to generate power
on the order of
tens of milliwatts,
depending on gait and speed.
A boost converter
increases voltage,
and energy is stored in
a super capacitor used
to charge a LiPo
battery embedded
in the wall of the shoe.
As sufficient charge builds up
to power the GPS transmitter,
a signal is released,
communicating location
over the cellular network.
By integrating this technology
into the current military wear,
it would definitely
be beneficial
for peace-time training
and also combat situations.
