### Dean Geoff Garrett - The Bottom Line is Uncertainty

Idioma: en
good morning good afternoon good evening
everybody I just saw that the number of
participants had rapidly jumped over 500
people who are joining us on on the call
today so I want to thank everyone for
doing their parents and students it's
it's great to see you I can't see you
you can see me but I'm so pleased we get
the stuff that you need to connect this
is this an important day for me among
other things I'm celebrating two weeks
on the job and when I think about that
you know I
the etymology of this of the quotes may
you live in interesting times is a bit
contested but it does feel like it's the
reality today we're certainly living in
incredibly interesting times and when I
think about my own personal reactions to
that I really think about to be words
it's been pretty exhausting I think it's
exhausting for us all but it's also
extraordinarily exhilarating to be in
this to be in this environment you know
when I think about the crisis I have a
couple of reactions to it at the biggest
picture level the first one is that the
crisis on many dimensions is
accelerating trends that were already
there and I think that's absolutely true
in the world of higher education so more
online more use of technology pressure
on the value proposition of higher
education issues of affordability and
access and diversity and racial justice
are accelerated and and I think we're
also witnessing pressures with respect
to D globalization for a university like
USC that has had there's been so
internationalized for decades the second
thing I'd say about the crisis is that
it's happening in real time
you know normally we think about
universities has been kind of sleepy
places that aren't aren't affected in
the same way don't have the kind of Just
In Time pressures that exist for example
in the corporate world well that's not
true today I think it's probably a first
for universities that we're having to
react in real-time to events in in way
that are affecting lots of the economy
but but they're affecting universities
in a in a stronger way than for many
sectors you know universities aren't as
hard hits by the crisis as for example
airlines and hotels but universities are
in the density business and density is
the enemy in the pandemic so crisis in
real time is something I think about all
the time
the last internet very introductory
thing that I wanted to say was just to
you know I'm a big believer in trying to
make lemonade out of lemons and and one
thing that's really true is that my
transition to being dean of the school
has just been accelerated and made much
more intense than it would have been
under other circumstances so I certainly
feel in a better position to be taking
on the deanship of the school now than I
would have been under quote-unquote
normal circumstances so so let's think a
little bit about the world that we're
living in today you know the bottom line
I think for us all right now is
uncertainty and when I think about
uncertainty analytically you know I
unpack it into three components the
first one is just the sheer
unpredictability of events the second
dimension is the speed of change and the
third dimension is lack of coherence
around facts
state of play and and we you know we see
that with the coronavirus and everything
that's surrounding it I think on a daily
basis so let me react to uncertainty in
two ways the first one is just to
acknowledge how anxious we all are I
include myself in that group and how
many concerns we have because just
living in a world of radical uncertainty
is a very very difficult thing I think
that creates a leadership challenge and
in you when I think about that
leadership challenge I my bottom line is
to be real and I
being real means first acknowledging
your limitations I don't know all the
answers you're going to hear a lot of I
don't know today from you but it also
entails saying we're all in this
together if we are collectively we're
just going to do better and I think a
way that a leader can catalyze a
collective activity is by being both
authentic and transparent by being
really open about what's going on again
what we know and what we don't know so
that's certainly the leadership
challenge that I'm I hope to rise to and
I know or all leaders are trying to do
that right now
and I will tell you that we're you know
we can't answer all the questions in a
one-hour zoom call so we're building an
FAQ section on the Marshall website that
we hope will answer many of your
questions or tell you what we don't know
and will continually update that in
real-time because literally things are
evolving in real time let me go
philosophical for a second and I've been
thinking about quotations that speak to
me in this moment and and I've got four
for you and the first one is is
something I saw a couple just a couple
of days ago from a CEO talking about the
world right now and the person said
we've made more major decisions in the
past 90 days than in the last 10 years
and I think that's so true for so many
of us and it's certainly true on
University campuses at USC and at
Marshall and the second quotation I've
been thinking about is thinking about
headwinds right we tend to talk about
headwinds and tailwind and there are a
lot of headwinds out there in the world
right now but Winston Churchill who
seems to have had great quotations for
almost everything once said kites rise
highest against the wind not with it so
I think that's inspiring yes there are
some headwinds out there but if we can
rise the kite even faster and take
advantage of the headwinds that's
exactly the right way
third quotation for me is the role of
business schools and and I've thought
about this for a long time as ideas into
outcomes business schools are in the
business of incubating ideas but at
least as importantly figuring out how to
translate them into outcomes outcomes
that will matter but I saw recently that
I'm not the first person to think that
way in fact the German poet Goethe I
said it much more eloquently than I
could a couple hundred years ago and
here's here's the Goethe knowing is not
enough we must apply willing is not
enough we must do and I say amen to that
that's exactly how I think about
business schools and then my last
quotation is more broadly about the role
of Education and and I watched last
night a fantastic documentary on Nelson
Mandela and bringing the Rugby World Cup
to South Africa in 1995 a visionary and
courageous thing that Nelson Mandela did
as the new president of South Africa and
Mandela is spared once education is the
most powerful weapon you can use to
change the world and that resonates so
powerfully for me because coming to the
United States for higher education
radically transformed my life in ways
that I could never have anticipated so I
just appreciate so profoundly the
transformative power of higher education
and certainly it's why I'm so motivated
to now to be Dean of the Marshall school
and see if we can change the world
through our education

Idioma: en
welcome to the new Academic Year I hope
everyone had a wonderful summer and
you're as excited as I am about the New
Year it's a great time to be at Marshall
the opportunities technology is creating
are incredible take electric vehicles
for example the internal combustion
engine was arguably the greatest
innovation of the 20th century now
traditional engines will likely be gone
by the middle of this century and who
knows if we'll even be driving ourselves
by then that's the power of business
Innovation but at the same time business
responsibilities are greater than ever
before and not only when it comes to
sustainability this year for example
Disney had to take a stand on education
laws in Florida while McDonald's had to
decide what to do about its stores in
Russia 10 years ago C CEOs would have
said addressing those issues just
weren't part of their job not today
customers and employees just expect more
of their leaders way more that's why at
Marshall we're focusing on helping our
students develop both the technical
skills and the leadership skills needed
to thrive in today's business world and
this year we have a lot of incredible
new programs and initiatives to look
forward to from new undergraduate
emphases and Joint degrees to
initiatives in data science and digital
ethics to multiple investment funds
where students make real investments in
real dollars to our newly named Peter
arkley Institute for risk management and
Innovative ESG courses the opportunities
at Marshall are just incredible jump in
with both
feet

welcome to a new Academic Year at
Marshall as we embark on another
exciting year I couldn't be more
energized we're committed to becoming
the world's leading comprehensive
business school and we keep innovating
to get there our goal is to combine the
very best academic programs at all
levels with second to none research
thought leadership and Industry
engagement all that amplifi by the
incomparable Trojan
Network at the undergraduate level we're
launching our fifth interdisiplinary
program the business of innovation in
partnership with the ivin and young
Academy it'll combine all the creativity
of Iya with all the business knowhow of
Marshall unique is a high bar but I
think this is a unique program joining
other real innovators at Marshall like
our AI for business and our business of
cinematic Arts degrees we're introducing
new opportunities for our MBA students
also to earn one of our specialized
master's degrees during their time with
us and we've inaugurated a new career
Launchpad week at the beginning of the
MBA to help our students shape the rest
of their degrees and to position them
for Career Success we know that
enhancing the technical fluency of our
students must be combined with a real
focus on leadership and we're in the
Vanguard of change when it comes to
leadership education by focusing on
human skills like authenticity and
transparency compassion and empathy and
self-awareness and
self-reflection we offer our
undergraduates six different leadership
program opportunities a real Rarity
among undergraduate Business Schools and
we're rolling out a new weeklong social
leadership initiative in the middle of
the MBA dedicated to implementing social
and environmental leadership Across The
Core Business
disciplines at Marshall we continue to
work to further president Carol fault's
moonshots for USC one of them concerns
Athletics with USC's entry into the Big
10 we're bringing together Athletics and
academics by launching a new class at
the Nexus of sports Business Media
technology and society and later this
fall we'll also co-host a conference
with USC annenburg bringing together
leaders from all facets of sport to
brainstorm what's next from fandom and
influences to sports as an asset
class a marshal education is about much
more than just getting a business degree
it's about embarking on a lifelong
journey to shape our world it's a world
of both unlimited potential and
unparalleled respons posibility and
we're developing Leaders with the
knowledge skills and commitment not only
to succeed in their own lives but also
to have an enduring impact on the lives
of others I am so honored to be part of
that Journey

our society has come to exhibit and
expect expanded responsibilities from
all types of organization ranging from
hiring and compensation disparities to
homelessness and global warming this is
the reason sustainability reporting has
become important it holds companies
accountable for the claims they make to
conscious minded consumers and investors
expectations the new sustainability
reporting guid lines that the SEC is
proposing to initiate and also giving
you the opportunity to learn beyond the
traditional accounting skills as well
too by developing those soft skills
that's ever more important ESG is
critical in any company and we are
raising students in the undergrad and
master's program who have values and
they don't want just to care about just
that big job or the the salary or the
brand name of a company but but it's
making an impact and human happiness two
of our most distinguished professors
Patty dechow and Richard Sloan are not
only creating new accounting courses on
the impact of companies on the
environment and Society their research
and advocacy will also help Define both
how companies order their own
performance and how the SEC will
regulate them in this Brave New World of
ESG what really makes the sustainability
initiative stand out to me is the
far-reaching
implications traditionally I've taught
courses on financial reporting and there
the goal is to help protect investors
from bad financial decisions for
sustainability reporting the stakes are
much higher it's really protecting
Humanity from making decisions that are
going to harm future Generations as a
graduate of USC lenthal if you're going
into accounting related positions ESG is
a really untapped Market as a matter of
fact half of the Fortune 500 companies
are actually going to be seeking these
Assurance services within sustainability
reporting there is controversy over the
role nature and extent of ESG
information in our society but
regardless of how those matters play out
if such information is to be provided as
a basis for performance evaluation and
related
decisionmaking the accounting profession
is well suited to set standards for its
development and dissemination many of
our accounting students want to give
back their commitment to pursue a career
in this field is due to personal
conviction what makes this field of
study even more unique at USC is that we
have a university-wide sustainability
initiative which keeps sustainability on
the top of mind for all of us every
student staff and faculty at USC has an
opportunity to make a big

impact

we have a very strong program at
Marshall across different areas so we
have statistics we have operations
Finance marketing is my field I'm
studying a PhD in marketing I'm
interesting in understanding some topics
about Healthcare markets I am really
interested in the psychology of
technology so understanding how
technology interacts with people how
people respond to technology and
particularly issues of like ethics and
justice I study Fair machine learning
which in general means we want to know
how we can take in data and make
decisions about people that is fair I'm
studying marketing uh I'm a sixth year
PhD candidate and my concentration is
consumer behavior I'm a PhD candidate uh
in the data sciences and operations
department and you know I I focus on
research and data driven decision-
making USC and specifically the program
at the business school really has this
applied Focus this focus on how do we
not just ask questions that are
theoretically interesting but that are
practically relevant and really use
those questions to like create a better
world our faculty work very closely with
the students we don't take that many
students and so they're able to form
very close mentorship relationship and
our students are able to get very strong
training we have a very small program
and I really wanted to work quickly on
problems and I wanted to work with
people that were at the Leading Edge of
their field so in general that's a
really nice combination to learn a lot
very quickly it's like a really
close-knit department so it's really
good for collaboration and for like
learning and being mentored I think
that's like one of the most important
things for a PhD candidate is like being
trained well and having like the right
people to kind of guide you to becoming
like a full-fledged researcher it's very
interdisciplinary for instance I work
with professors in from psychology or
from computer science uh and this is
very encouraged so all the students are
encouraged to work with you know
multiple faculties outside the school
we've had a lot of students in the past
work in marketing and we've had students
work with other computer scientists in
vby we've had students work in the math
department as well there's a lot of
people who like to work on applied
business problems and so they go work
with the faculty there we work on
specific research problems where I drive
it and they help guide it in a way to
make it like a a good publishable paper
or just like to kind of further my
understanding also they help work on the
research with you making sure that you
kind of get more experience with a
certain field or um just like techniques
I wanted to start the carve my own Niche
uh and a lot of Faculty of Marshall are
really good at helping you start your
own area and not just focus on the
papers they're doing you learn by
studying and you learn by doing and
especially you learn from your mates
your classmates your colleagues The
Faculty getting diverse opinions from
all of them H and working on different
methods on different topics so I thought
you know that would make me a good
researcher in the future so that's why I
came to
Marshall

### Marshall School of Business: Online MBA (OMBA)

Idioma: en
I chose the Marshall omba program
because it is designed for full-time
working professionals the students in
the program uh work during the day and
then they take classes at night it's a
wonderful interactive program using Zoom
we draw students from all over the
country and sometimes all over the world
at the time I worked for vindabona
Productions in TV production and so that
program suited my schedule being able to
work during the day and take those
evening classes during Co I had
re-evaluated just where my career was
going and find new ways to grow in a
professional and personal way and
decision for online versus full-time was
you know I didn't want to put myself in
a situation to be in a a big amount of
debt when I graduate it's a very
rigorous program it's a great
opportunity for those students to
interact and learn and H and sort of
sometimes get into slightly different
areas sometimes people switch Industries
or sometimes people stay in their jobs
but it enriches uh what they're doing
some of the classes I've taken in Oma
have been immediately relevant for my
career uh some of them include
negotiations entrepreneurship and
finance I work in sales so I have the in
personal skills but now knowing how to
back that up financially in order to
make projections that are actually
accurate and can do better forecasting
which I think management usually is
happy with that it's elevated my career
opportunities and I certainly say that
it's elevated my resume and
credentialing to pursue better career
Pathways in larger organizations after I
started the program I got the
opportunity to become an associate
producer and I think the program helped
me stand out at my company and helped me
get that promotion I was able to get a
new job partway through the program
which was challenging in its own but I
was able to join a team where it would
have taken me about 10 to 15 years of
more experience to get to that team I
have a lot of friends and colleagues who
I know who completed the USC MBA program
and I have heard of just many success
stories and the Trojan network is just
so powerful that is why I chose the
online MBA program at Marshall School of
Business

I am Rachelle Seville I am from Saudi
Arabia I graduated in 2013 from King
Saud University majored in finance right
after graduation I started working at
the Saudi Arabian Capital Markets
Authority as is he equivalent I was part
of the investment products issuance
department my royal mainly was three
delayed investment product and ensure
that the market is transparent efficient
and healthy for all stakeholders being
an undergrad and Finance and working
closely in the financial market I
recognized how extensive the financial
field is so I decided to broaden my
knowledge and finance and have the right
expertise in other patterns of finance
USC Marshalls master's and finance
curriculum is designed to strategically
empower financial professionals to be
extremely professional and critical
skills such as portfolio management
forecasting risk management and
corporate governance and my previous job
we used to do a lot of research and
projects on best practices around the
world and having or being with
classmates coming from different
countries expanded my knowledge of best
practices around the world especially
from the regulation side being in Los
Angeles as an international student has
a huge advantage of being in a community
that is diverse and even accepting not
only of race but also of ideas it's been
a great year here at USC I've learned a
lot from classmates faculty members and
even the staff

my name is Arthi cody Allah I'm from
Mountain View California and I'm
currently in the masters in finance
program at USC my undergraduate degree
is from UC San Diego I graduated in
March of 2017 and I studied economics
and accounting
I chose USC Marshall because the faculty
and the alumni network here is very
strong and I also personally really want
to end up in Southern California
career-wise so I thought that being able
to go to school here would provide me
with a really great educational and
professional experience while also
expanding my network in the area I think
that the curriculum provides the really
the best of both worlds in the sense
that you can learn those fundamental
concepts that everyone really needs and
also specialize in what your passions
are my classmates in the program are
from a lot of different countries a lot
of different majors and a lot of
different universities and I really like
the diversity there because when we're
working on projects we've all learned
different types of things so being able
to mold all of our skills together when
working together just gives me a lot of
insights into other people's backgrounds
and I think this will be really useful
for me when I'm working in the future I
feel that everyone is competitive in the
sense that they all want to do their
personal best so they can be successful
but I think the collaboration component
is also very strong so no one will put
each other down everyone always tries to
put each other up collectively
and I really liked that about USC I'm
about to graduate and I'm really excited
because I will start working full-time
in San Diego I will be working at a
company called encore Capital Group as a
business analyst this will allow me to
take a lot of the financial skills that
I've learned and the statistical skills
that I've learned in this program and
apply them to a more technical and
applied setting I'm pretty excited for
my first full-time applied experience in
the workforce

my name is resti Mariah and I'm
originally from Japan I graduate from
Duquesne University and Pittsburgh PA in
2015 or the double major in information
system management and management I have
a fundamental belief that today's
business is built upon two main pillars
IT and finance I study IT for four years
and worked in the field for two years
and I decided to pivot my focus to
finance and I thought getting MSN
Finance would be the most efficient way
to get my foot in the door and working
the finance field what made me choose
yes you marshal specifically the MSF
program was three things
one was a Trojan network second was a
location being LA and third was the
flexibility in the program allowing me
to focus on the parts of finance that
I'm really interested in there are tons
of amazing professors but for me
personally what made a huge impact was
the career advisors they're there from
day one coming in even before the
program starts they were recognized from
the get-go my career objective was to
become a strategy consultant
they helped me strategies as a
recruiting process that connected me
with other faculty members who's in
charge of the consulting recruiting and
their help has been invaluable and
without them I don't think I would have
the job I have today we've got a miss
being in this program but at the same
time and they're much excited to take on
my next journey in Japan as a strategy
consultant

PhD in finance program and I'm gonna be
teaching and conducting research back in
in na University in my country the
faculty at Marshall are very
inspirational for anyone who wants to
pursue career in academia they need to
speak and be taught by professors with
amazing records
I definitely got there here I'm not only
learning the knowledge from them but
also their way of teaching is is
different than where I came from and
they have taught me in so many different
ways in addition to the fact that they
are great researchers they have an
amazing technical aspect when they teach
so many of the professors were able to
help us into the world of coding
programming and and applying these very
technical aspects in finance so having
professors with you know this amazing
rich theoretical knowledge and this
practical aspect that that is very rare
I would say and I was able to get that
from the faculty members here

my considerations were uh top
universities who are having um um MBA
program and USC happened to be among the
top uh universities uh having the MBA
program I came in with very high
expectations and I can honestly say that
this program far exceeded those
expectations the gima program unlike
other institutions the gima program at
USC has the exact same curriculum and
same professors as the emba program in
Los Angel in San Diego I I come here to
learn and I did learn and they offered
opportunity for me to learn that's
great the program as a whole it touches
on every area so we learned about
logistics we learned about marketing we
learned about sales so we learned about
all of these different areas so that we
can better rent a company and manage and
manage a company rather than having to
just be really good at Finance or really
good at marketing it's it's a better
overview that way we are we are
generalists we are I mean we've been
taught on every subject U that's
necessary for a general manager to know
about unlike other other NBA programs
the Gambit program doesn't have any
concentration it has helped me
crystallize a lot of knowledge that I
kind of knew before uh internalize these
things um really learn them really
understand them there's incorporation
not only of the finance part but there's
a a very good incorporation of uh
marketing operations leadership and
communication I think that is the
difference of the um gamble program so
the material is not any lighter um than
the EMA or MBA courses it's just more
intense over a long period of time I
didn't want just a piece of paper that
said yes you graduated from a a bit an a
prestigious business school I wanted a I
wanted to get the information I wanted
the the content to be um rich and uh and
challenging and it definitely was rich
and
challenging when you start researching
the professors uh there there's some of
the top ones and not just the country
but the world itself the best thing
academically about the USC program is
that our professors are from USC they're
flown up from USC they give us the same
content as the other EMA programs
throughout USC they're the same
professors who teach in the EMA program
Marshall College only picks the top uh
professors to teach us most of our
professors not only did they have uh
Academia experience or expertise for
sure uh they also had uh industrial
experience and I think in MBA uh this
kind of MBA program program that's very
important they select the best teacher
out of the school put out the best
program they can offer to us we've been
very um happy and satisfied with the
quality of the professors we've had and
this takes a lot of them for them to be
flying out from LA and then going to
Shanghai but the richness of the the
insights that they were able to provide
the students is very good and their
openness to help the students and to
continuously communicate with us is
amazing
throughout the program uh they made it
very easy uh for the students to focus
on uh the school as opposed to worrying
about logistics or coordinating what
what are we supposed to be doing where
we supposed to be all of that was taken
care of our class is spaced like 6 weeks
apart and then we have like five
intensive days of classes it worked very
well for executives uh who are are
working like me and all my classmates
because the 6 weeks gives you enough
time to prepare for the class uh the
coming class and at the same time to do
all your assignments and homeworks after
class first thing was the location a lot
of my company's growth was in Asia and I
wanted to find a program that would help
um enhance my knowledge of how business
was done in in Asia and logistically it
was easy for me it's it's basically
you're able to structure your life or
your schoolwork around your life as
opposed to your life around the
schoolwork uh that way you're able to
really prioritize as you're working
full-time when you're in this program
you're able to prioritize the things
that need to be attended to
meeting I have met the most amazing
people we have GMS we have directors we
have family company owners we have um
Managers from Cisco and Intel and all
different Disney um and we all come to
together and we all live overseas we
work overseas
and I learned just as much from my
classmates as I did from the professors
beside to mention the teachers and
content I really do like our
classmates uh that's very unique and
very enriching experience for me uh
being able to sit in the classroom um
exchange of fighting on topics with
students from all the world that's a
very unique experience these people have
so much experience and information that
that you know the professor's talking
about logistics and then all of a sudden
someone who's from a logistics company
is up there giving a presentation about
what they do in their company it makes
it all real and it and it brings that um
that hands-on experience into the mix
graduation is really important and it's
really awesome and I'm really glad that
we're done
but it's it's heartbreaking to have to
leave this group of people and I know
that we're all going to be in contact
for forever
now

### Marshall School of Business: Master of Business for Veterans
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN8pPFzzAhE
Idioma: en
my name is - Keisha Waites theory hi my
name is Jessica Bradshaw my name is Mike
Witt on about four years in the Navy I
have served in the military for 12 years
I served eight years in the United
States Marine Corps I attended an info
session in San Diego and I knew right
away that USC would be the best place
for me the reason I chose the MBV
program at USC Marshall was the
camaraderie and the cohort style very
happy to be part of this program just
because it means a lot that they're
actually trying to bridge the gap for
veterans and transitioning out from
their military service into the civilian
sector I was in the Career Services
office just getting help with my resume
and things like that and I started
talking to the executive assistant there
about what I wanted to do after
graduation and I told her I wanted to
open a restaurant she got up out of her
chair went walked somewhere and brought
back this woman who was a restaurant
designer she sat with us and she gave me
so much education I'm still in contact
with her so the connections have been
amazing because I didn't have a Southern
California Network I had a DC Network
so just expanding my network and helping
me get into the restaurant business has
been great being around veterans and
exclusivity veteran court Hort they
understand some of the challenges of
transitioning from military life to the
private sector having that type of
camaraderie was really important to me I
absolutely loved the board of counselors
getting to know each and every one of
those individuals it has been helping
out a lot just getting to know different
industries that I never thought I would
be interested in I didn't realize it at
the time but and properly transitioned
from the Marine Corps I tried like many
veterans I tried to do a lot of things
on my own one of the things that they
talked about from the from day one at
orientation and the nbv program was if
you don't walk on stage no one will see
you and being a veteran in the past what
happened was is I stayed within my core
network and I didn't put myself out
there and I was questioning why
opportunities weren't coming my way
the mbv program specifically taught me
how to walk on stage I would tell many
of my female veterans that they need to
like actually look into this program
because it's something that you think
it's one of those things that you're
just going to check the block and say
hey I have a graduate degree but then
once you're in the program you're fully
immersed in it your cohort members are
gonna be your biggest asset they're like
family now if you want to find a way to
transition out and you want to be with
other people who are like-minded this is
a program to do it in

### USC M.S. in Marketing: Why Join the MS in Marketing Program
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVLRi7uffBM
Idioma: en
[Music]
[Music]
one of the reasons that I initially
decided to join us C was to have the
opportunity to speak with a variety of
people from various industries
that's the x-factor as far as US sees MS
and marketing program the fact that we
can talk to people that are actually in
the field that's that's it
you get one-on-one contact we're in a
group we're all the family we all learn
together and with that that equals more
questions more insights and more to
learn and there's always more to learn
and USC provides that but we learn about
companies and industries and startups
that are really disrupting the world in
a sense that we learn about Netflix and
Amazon Google and Facebook and network
here you know it's unlike any other like
you hear it all the time the USA Network
but here it's it's crazy you're getting
people from Google and you're getting
people from Nike
80 and it's definitely just a unique and
great opportunity to do that one of the
benefits of enrolling in Marshall School
of Business is its location in Los
Angeles there are a multitude of
different industries and many of the
businesses and headquarters are located
in Los Angeles which gives us the
opportunity as students of Marshall to
interact with many of these industry
leaders I came from India with a lot of
inhibitions in my mind a sense that I
have I had a carrier back in India and I
had to leave my families and come back
here in LA without knowing anyone here
those were kind of my deepest fear when
I joined this program but now this feels
like a second home to me
and I've made so many friends here as
far as campus life is concerned this is
the premier university to be at Garret
Marshall there are a lot of graduate
clubs that you can join
there are things from Marshall it's
where they go out and eat wonderful food
in Los Angeles there's the Golf Club the
wine club marketing Club GMA I'm part of
graduate women in business as a vp of
marketing and then there's some other
the business of entertainment and
hospitality and gaming there's just so
many for whatever kind of industry that
you want to get into we need to always
be kind of challenging what's happening
next and where the industries are going
and then we also need to be very
persistent in pursuing the jobs and
industries that we do want I would
recommend the MS marketing program to
anyone who knows that they want to work
in marketing whether it's into a
packaging or toys or entertainment
whatever it is if you know that you want
to learn more about consumers hey
and analytics and that's the path that
you want to go on build out your network
and learn the tools that will help you
grow your career

Idioma: en
welcome to the new Academic Year I hope
everyone had a wonderful summer and
you're as excited as I am about the New
Year it's a great time to be at Marshall
the opportunities technology is creating
are incredible take electric vehicles
for example the internal combustion
engine was arguably the greatest
innovation of the 20th century now
traditional engines will likely be gone
by the middle of this century and who
knows if we'll even be driving ourselves
by then that's the power of business
Innovation but at the same time business
responsibilities are greater than ever
before and not only when it comes to
sustainability this year for example
Disney had to take a stand on education
laws in Florida while McDonald's had to
decide what to do about its stores in
Russia 10 years ago C CEOs would have
said addressing those issues just
weren't part of their job not today
customers and employees just expect more
of their leaders way more that's why at
Marshall we're focusing on helping our
students develop both the technical
skills and the leadership skills needed
to thrive in today's business world and
this year we have a lot of incredible
new programs and initiatives to look
forward to from new undergraduate
emphases and Joint degrees to
initiatives in data science and digital
ethics to multiple investment funds
where students make real investments in
real dollars to our newly named Peter
arkley Institute for risk management and
Innovative ESG courses the opportunities
at Marshall are just incredible jump in
with both

the vanac digital assets initiative at
USC Marshall benefits the students
because it creates a hub for the
blockchain and digital assets ecosystem
within the school but also in LA and in
the global Community for this fast Ting
technology digital assets are changing
the way that the financial system works
and what we see is Bitcoin or other
digital asset projects in the news
practically every day and even driving
the news cycle over the past last few
years and students want to be on The
Cutting Edge of Finance blockchain
ecosystem and digital assets actually
create that next Evolution where it's
structured and built to transfer value
and that's what's so exciting it's a
paradigm shift in the way technology
works today it's just an interesting
innovating space in general because
never at a point in human history where
transaction Technologies half mature to
this state Marshall has shown that it's
willing to be responsive to new
technologies and take advantage of
trends and really cement itself as a
school that is trying to educate new
thoughts and new leaders and really be
at the Forefront of innovation there is
no shortage of student interest there's
already a student club that has over a
thousand community members on campus
today the way that we increase education
it's really through a full ecosystem
around this so it's classes its events
its conferences it's participation with
industry it's funding companies it's
meeting with investors I believe the
Vanek digital assets initiative brings
the conversation around digital assets
to the campus and really what we're
thinking about is the future of money
and the future of finance and education
really derives from new ideas we already
worked closely with industry
Professionals in the top exchanges and
top funds and top protocols and there's
a wide range of Industry professionals
who already developed and worked in the
space Marshall has really emphasized
macroeconomic Theory
not thinking within the box of your
local community but rather within the
box of your local country Andor the
world and it's really taught me how to
put myself into the perspective of
people from around the world from
different cultures different backgrounds
different businesses to understand how
to conduct business through digital
Assets in a more efficient and
streamlined way the creater economy is
at the Forefront of exploration of
blockchain and digital assets and USC
Marshall is right in the heart of La the
leader in creater economy entertainment
art nfts web 3 all that is centered here
and it gives us the opportunity to take
a leadership role not just here but
globally

I am Rachelle Seville I am from Saudi
Arabia I graduated in 2013 from King
Saud University majored in finance right
after graduation I started working at
the Saudi Arabian Capital Markets
Authority as is he equivalent I was part
of the investment products issuance
department my royal mainly was three
delayed investment product and ensure
that the market is transparent efficient
and healthy for all stakeholders being
an undergrad and Finance and working
closely in the financial market I
recognized how extensive the financial
field is so I decided to broaden my
knowledge and finance and have the right
expertise in other patterns of finance
USC Marshalls master's and finance
curriculum is designed to strategically
empower financial professionals to be
extremely professional and critical
skills such as portfolio management
forecasting risk management and
corporate governance and my previous job
we used to do a lot of research and
projects on best practices around the
world and having or being with
classmates coming from different
countries expanded my knowledge of best
practices around the world especially
from the regulation side being in Los
Angeles as an international student has
a huge advantage of being in a community
that is diverse and even accepting not
only of race but also of ideas it's been
a great year here at USC I've learned a
lot from classmates faculty members and
even the staff

my name is Arthi cody Allah I'm from
Mountain View California and I'm
currently in the masters in finance
program at USC my undergraduate degree
is from UC San Diego I graduated in
March of 2017 and I studied economics
and accounting
I chose USC Marshall because the faculty
and the alumni network here is very
strong and I also personally really want
to end up in Southern California
career-wise so I thought that being able
to go to school here would provide me
with a really great educational and
professional experience while also
expanding my network in the area I think
that the curriculum provides the really
the best of both worlds in the sense
that you can learn those fundamental
concepts that everyone really needs and
also specialize in what your passions
are my classmates in the program are
from a lot of different countries a lot
of different majors and a lot of
different universities and I really like
the diversity there because when we're
working on projects we've all learned
different types of things so being able
to mold all of our skills together when
working together just gives me a lot of
insights into other people's backgrounds
and I think this will be really useful
for me when I'm working in the future I
feel that everyone is competitive in the
sense that they all want to do their
personal best so they can be successful
but I think the collaboration component
is also very strong so no one will put
each other down everyone always tries to
put each other up collectively
and I really liked that about USC I'm
about to graduate and I'm really excited
because I will start working full-time
in San Diego I will be working at a
company called encore Capital Group as a
business analyst this will allow me to
take a lot of the financial skills that
I've learned and the statistical skills
that I've learned in this program and
apply them to a more technical and
applied setting I'm pretty excited for
my first full-time applied experience in
the workforce

my name is resti Mariah and I'm
originally from Japan I graduate from
Duquesne University and Pittsburgh PA in
2015 or the double major in information
system management and management I have
a fundamental belief that today's
business is built upon two main pillars
IT and finance I study IT for four years
and worked in the field for two years
and I decided to pivot my focus to
finance and I thought getting MSN
Finance would be the most efficient way
to get my foot in the door and working
the finance field what made me choose
yes you marshal specifically the MSF
program was three things
one was a Trojan network second was a
location being LA and third was the
flexibility in the program allowing me
to focus on the parts of finance that
I'm really interested in there are tons
of amazing professors but for me
personally what made a huge impact was
the career advisors they're there from
day one coming in even before the
program starts they were recognized from
the get-go my career objective was to
become a strategy consultant
they helped me strategies as a
recruiting process that connected me
with other faculty members who's in
charge of the consulting recruiting and
their help has been invaluable and
without them I don't think I would have
the job I have today we've got a miss
being in this program but at the same
time and they're much excited to take on
my next journey in Japan as a strategy
consultant

Saudi Arabia I graduated in 2015 from
King Saud University with a Bachelor
degree in finance I worked for an
international management consulting firm
for a year and then I joined a
university as a lecturer in finance
hopefully after this program I'll join a
PhD in finance program and I'm gonna be
teaching and conducting research back in
in na University in my country the
faculty at Marshall are very
inspirational for anyone who wants to
pursue career in academia they need to
speak and be taught by professors with
amazing records
I definitely got there here I'm not only
learning the knowledge from them but
also their way of teaching is is
different than where I came from and
they have taught me in so many different
ways in addition to the fact that they
are great researchers they have an
amazing technical aspect when they teach
so many of the professors were able to
help us into the world of coding
programming and and applying these very
technical aspects in finance so having
professors with you know this amazing
rich theoretical knowledge and this
practical aspect that that is very rare
I would say and I was able to get that
from the faculty members here

The Faculty is phenomenal the students
are phenomenal you're in a close-knit
family so it's almost like you're in an
accounting family with everybody and
everyone is just great everyone's so
supportive here they really help you
[Music]
succeed the reason Leal is so good is
because the professors that we have here
are just the best in the world they're
involved in you other professional
activities they're involved in the
community they're the top people in
their respective fields and the network
that we have here the firms the big four
the mid- tier they love us uh you know
USC they want to recruit as many people
as they can from
USC L thought really just prepared me
for working um I've already started
working full-time in January and I've
really gone to see how my academic
preparation is just gone me um I've gone
on a really great projects I know the
material like I can apply it it's
practical it's not just theoretical so I
just the Core Curriculum is just what
really I got the most out of
her probably the best experience was
being a TA for Professor murl Hopkins
and I really just enjoyed getting in
front of a class during my ta session
and helping helping students out in any
way I possibly could and um eventually
that'll probably lead me to becoming a
professor sometime in the later
future lonol provides you a lot of
opportunities that you won't find
anywhere else and the network is
stronger than anything else you will
ever find at another school um it's a
great place to build and to really find
out who you are and it's a place that'll
challenge you in order to find those
things areas and aspects of you that you
would have never otherwise encountered
It prepares you unbelievably the
recruiting process um as far as
professional firms coming to USC to get
you is
[Music]
amazing first of all the El doll SCH of
county has a wonderful staff a lot of
the professors have industry experience
so you get to hear about their stories
you know within the industry not only
with the academics but just like their
interactions with clients with um work
experience so that's great and then also
just the connections you make with the
fellow stents and also with Al lumon
it's just Priceless yeah

my name is NaN and I'm a senior at
Marshall school business my name is
Julie Chang I'm a junior at USC and I'm
studying business administration and I
went to Panama gpp this past spring
March 2012 when there we learned that we
will actually team up with students from
Emory University we were split into
groups of five or six and then we were
assigned to a family that had shown
interest in working with us what we got
was information about their family
background as well as their education
background and what their business was
about it takes a lot more effort to
working with people you don't know
before so initially it takes a long time
for us to for my idea of how to work
with the families and what kind of
things we should focus on teaching them
the first day we meet them after we come
back every single day we will debrief
that's a group almost 50 students and we
talk about different experience working
with all the families in the community
so it's very interesting to see that the
community what they do and all weather
daily lives it's like they're very much
like us they have the same interests as
us they like candies they like sweets
they like to take naps they like to sing
and dance and have fun after our debrief
will actually working teams and come up
with the lesson plan for the family for
the next day my team will work from
maybe a PM to like 1am just to come up
with what we're going to talk about the
next day what makes sense to the family
based on their math skills are based on
what they know about importance of
saving money like how much they know
about financial literacy I expected to
do something completely drastic and
change their lives in a huge way and we
did change their lives we went in there
to interact with them and learn from
them as well as teach them

### Marshall Experience 2008

Idioma: en
Georgian network I mean it's one of the
best things I've ever seen like other
schools don't have it that's how I got
my job two professors and who they knew
there were former alums or even students
have graduated the pastor willing to
help you out just because your children
they may not know you but you're a
marshal student so as I a did you have
certain professor oh yeah then you're
connected I was able to go to Omaha
Nebraska with a case I'd to visit Warren
Buffett and actually have lunch with him
I was able to study abroad actually just
came back from a semester in Singapore
and we're just really opened my eyes to
globalization and just how small our
world is becoming and how much we as
business people have to learn to change
and adapt to that I think the best thing
about Marshalls they do a really good
job of giving you like a well-rounded
education things from communications to
management finance marketing and they
really give you this ability to sort of
pick what you want to specialize in
being able to pick your concentration
all the students everyone's so welcoming
at the school here and I hope I had the
best experience like meeting new friends
making new friends and like the
professor's I became really close with a
lot of them and they helped me and
guided me through my future and it
probably the whole college experience
was just wonderful I can't explain am so
happy I chose us see the the people here
that makes difference the faculty
students I mean we've got some of the
brightest and best people the faculty
our movers and shakers and all people
who've been there experienced it and you
know and they really connect they really
which really feels like a family here
Los Angeles Community Impact which is an
organization that me and my friends
started which does consulting for
nonprofits in the Los Angeles area and
that's probably been my favorite thing
because we basically started this
project from the ground up you know we
started with only a few members very
disorganized and now it's an
organization of over a hundred people
which you really see the impact in the
community and it's been great mostly
what you got to do is actually get out
there you can't learn everything books
but you also have a whole family behind
you to back you up
every class I've had has pretty much had
group based projects of small team three
to five people and I think that's really
Foster's a team of a culture of teamwork
and creativity and just um really
learning to tolerate other personality
types and work styles

### Social Entrepreneurship: What's Your Social Impact Story

Idioma: en
I'm Caitlyn Montel founder of poke
pantry and this is my social impact
story when I was a senior at USC I took
a non profits course that jump-started
my interest in social entrepreneurship
I began interning at an urban garden and
through that program really saw the way
that food transformed the diets and
livelihoods of kids and classes I found
a way to incorporate the tools that I
learned in the social innovation design
lab course taught by Professor Abbe to
create a solution to address both food
waste and health and nutrition and
that's how pulp pantry was born our
business model is impactful and
important in two ways one in Los Angeles
we don't have recycling infrastructure
just to take care of organic waste and
turn it into something better like
compost so what pole pantry does is we
work with joushi Ares to offer them a
solution that allows them to act on
their values to be more sustainable by
taking their juice pulp and transforming
it into highly nutritious foods but
there's also a clear need for those
those nutritious vegetable resources in
other parts of LA so how can we bridge
those two those two things together with
that I had this idea for pulp pantry and
was able to apply it in my coursework
high in pitch competitions around class
and around us see through the mentorship
network I was able to get connected to
pitch competitions and other
opportunities for funding which then
paved the way to us getting into the USC
incubator and really allowed us to
expand our our brand through a
university sponsored grant I really
believe in the power of the social
enterprise program to transform the
mindset of the entrepreneur and get them
to be thinking a little bit more
strategically about some of these things
rather than just profit it's also it's
also purpose

### Marshall School of Business: Student Investment Fund
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j9YW8FwoyY
Idioma: en
Marshall has been a leader in
experiential learning for decades but
we're also taking it a step further
Beyond simulations to Real World
Learning real opportunities real time
real impact our student advised
investment funds are a perfect example
giving students four credit
opportunities to manage money in real
time Surf and you surf are yearlong
rigorous experiential academic programs
for students seeking careers in
Investment Management Investment Banking
Corporate Finance financial consulting
and other careers in the financial
service industry I chose to enroll in
USF because I was attracted to the
opportunity to manage real money safe
has been a truly transformative
experience for me it's not only given me
this comprehensive toolkit of financial
techniques and expertise but it has also
sparked new found curiosity for
Innovative and exciting ideas there's
really no substitute for hands-on
experience uh to take what you're
learning in the academic classes and
apply that in a real world setting and
see what happens as the markets shift
and move we launched a new reap fund
giving students interested in real
estate the opportunity to invest in
offices and hotels Logistics hubs and
shopping malls the skills that we teach
in the class and the data sets and the
the analytical approach approaches that
the students develop in the class will
be amable to many different sectors
within real estate I was really excited
at the aspect of taking a class where
we're exposed to public markets and I
really enjoy Real Estate and Finance in
general so the re class you know you're
managing real money and you're learning
how to underwrite public Investments it
sounded
perfect we also have a venture fund with
students investing in early stage
companies the goal of the US C martial
Venture f fund is actually to deploy
Capital into startups the students are
literally making the investment decision
with guidance from our investment
committee that brings together Venture
Capital professionals from across the
Los Angeles area we had an opportunity
to analyze at least five companies for
investment and we heard at least five
different pitches from very diverse
Founders all across the world and I
found it really brought the learning to
life
the vanac digital assets initiative at
USC Marshall benefits the students
because it creates a hub for the
blockchain and digital assets ecosystem
within the school but also in LA and in
the global community so it's classes
it's events its conferences its
participation with industry it's funding
companies it's meeting with investors
and we're not done yet my hope is that
very soon every Marshall student will
have the opportunity to make real
investments in real dollars during their
time at the school Real World Learning
is a Cornerstone of a martial education
and there is simply no better example
than our suite of student advised
investment
funds

[Music]
when I learned about the world bachelor
in business that allows you to live and
study in three different universities
and graduate with a degree from
University I was very attracted to it
the opportunity to experience these
cities as a full-time student would
teach me something that a regular degree
program could never teach me the
students of today who are the citizens
of tomorrow are going to encounter a
world that doesn't have boundaries from
a business perspective for them to do
business and do it well they need to be
able to dissect the culture and
understand how cultural differences
impact decision-making in the business
world
[Music]
the discussion started with a meaning of
all that gains in Vice Dean's of the
Marshall school and I asked them to
think about something that was so
unusual and different that when we
talked about it with people the very
first words out of their mouth would be
oh wow
in the very next day our professor John
Matsuzaka came in and he said I got your
oh wow
and it was oh wow it is oh wow it is a
spectacular program that we couldn't be
prouder
[Music]
I got into a lot of it schools and no
matter what other school I would go to I
would still be one of a thousand
graduates but at four years in one place
what wbb allows me to be is it gives me
an entirely unique experience there is
no program like it and I'm one of 36 and
that's amazing because only 35 other
people have the experience that I have
and I think that employers are looking
for that I think that everybody is
looking for that when you begin to
explain the uniqueness of this program
to recruiters or people in the business
world I have to say the first reaction
is jaw-dropping they say where do we
find these students we have students
being placed in some of the most
competitive jobs in the world with
McKinsey in New York best banks in
London some in Dubai Google
it feels very special to be in wtvp we
can say I studied in three different
continents received three different
degrees in business and really got a
true understanding of three of the major
economic zones in the world

[Applause]
we are a celebration mixer for USC
Marshall redacted all the briefcase and
winning secrecy for 2018 by not zebra C
stands for challenge for charity the
competition that started in Stanford 34
years ago really as a way for us as
upcoming leaders in business world to
get together and raise money and
volunteer for charity it starts a pride
really competing against all the other
business schools and the West Coast and
really showing them that we're giving
back to the community USC has fought
hard to win the golden briefcase which
on the trophy that you win at the end so
we won it now eight times out of the
last nine years we raised 177 thousand
dollars this year eight thousand four
hundred eighty six total
we need to have companies come together
as business whole and focus on more than
just academics and really care about our
community in our family here you know
our Marshall Network and the USA Network
in general is really really strong why
did USA keep winning
we fight on

### Welcome to the Jill & Frank Fertitta Hall
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMjRjHaMzvk
Idioma: en
this stunning building is a gateway to
our University Park campus a gateway to
downtown to the economic heart of the
city and with its opening it is a
gateway to the hopes and dreams of
undergraduate students who will redefine
the business of the future when I first
came into Fertitta my first thought was
the students really loved this place we
wanted to change the culture of the
undergraduate program so they had a
place that was their home where they
could be here for community purposes
it's really housing so many things that
we needed in a undergraduate
instructional facility so we have
everything from the experiential
learning center in the basement to large
lecture halls or we can host guest
speakers and business leaders to
breakout rooms - small medium and large
class rooms depending on the different
subjects and what best suits their
delivery as students we now finally have
a place where we can congregate last
year after class I used to just run home
to go do my homework but now because we
have the space we stay
forty doha is a place where we can go
and we want to eat we want to be here we
want to hang out I love the little nooks
and crannies all around the building
there's lots of quiet spaces where
students can sit work on their laptops
as well as all the breakout rooms and
other places where students can work
collaboratively the fricative family
could not have been more supportive
Frank Fertitta had a great experience as
a student at USC and he wanted
generation is behind him have a similar
kind of experience the education I
received at Marshall was invaluable the
real-world knowledge insights and skills
that I learned there are the
cornerstones of how I approach business
every day
the facility that doctrine the kiss and
dean ellis planned and envisioned and
actually delivered on is absolutely
remarkable I think already my third year
at USC I can feel that I'm getting a
world-class education in business I
think now which patita hall here I
really feel like we have a home and we
have a world-class building as well with
technology and a bunch of resources for
our business students to use

### IBM INNOV8 Game Play
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bid79HDZUZs
Idioma: en
it's actually great to have students
learn by playing a game we will playing
the innovate game by IBM that's pretty
impressed because I wasn't expecting it
to be in 3D awesome you know video game
era I game a lot so if I could sitay at
home you know and game away and learn
about operations management at the same
time that would help traditional methods
are harder on professors because you
have to attract attention one thing
that's also a challenge when you're
lecturing is how do you draw the class
in so they're not sort of falling asleep
how do you engage them how are you
making them think during real time but
in gaming you know that students are
already involved in a fun environment
through the games and to be able to play
the game you have to be engaged I mean
there's not really an option of falling
asleep it's a lot more interesting and
it kind of gets you thinking how the
process works if you change the business
process what impacts do you see in the
end result the students can see the
diagram and they see that there's all
the numbers in the background and they
change the diagram and something else
happens and there's some ability to make
decisions based on that the simulation
was a little more interactive allowed
you the opportunity to kind of play
around with different variables and see
different outcomes and kind of learn
through doing you kind of get to know
like how a company actually works you
show students abstract business process
module diagrams and for them to see how
that might be used at a company is a big
leap after this it'll be easier to
explain how business processes are used
in companies I mean that's one thing
that I can lecture tell my ears fall off
and you can't convey like what are
companies actually doing how are they
actually using these things in a lecture
you understand you hear what the
professor is saying but in your minds
are you can't picture it I think the
game the interactive the level of
interactivity in the game helped you to
actually get a a solid feel for the
concepts in the class several of the
things that are in the background of the
game are things we'll talk about later
in the course it can be in multiple
stages so it's a good introductory game
like we did this time you can also
utilize this at the end of the course to
just to summarize the overall operations
to see that IBM is using this and
understand how a company might use some
of these diagrams to actually make
decisions is really useful so I think
that's very exciting for students to be
able to see that in the classroom I want
the game I got
fireworks for

### Torch Initiative for Womens Philanthropy

my name is Amy wildstein and I'm a proud
mom of two daughters who are Marshall
students my day job I lead a female
focused investment fund investing in
female Founders and focused on Bridging
the equity funding Gap in seeing that
there also exists a funding Gap in
philanthropy and with Marshall having
just 10% of its lead donors being women
the idea of joining the tour initiative
which was formed to help bridge that Gap
and get women more involved immediately
resonated with me through my work with
female Founders I fully appreciate the
value and importance of role models and
firmly believe that you have to see it
to be it giving the girls of the next
generation an opportunity to see the
torch leaders in action is a gift my
name is EJ Malin and I am a torch
initiative steering committee member and
and I'm on the board of leaders of
Marshall ever since I was young my
parents taught me that we should have a
culture of giving um back to anything
that we feel grateful for I think it's
very important for women to give back
we're often times the financial decision
makers in our households in my household
I am in charge of our philanthropy and
so as a mother of daughters I think it's
very important to pass along the lessons
that we've been taught being a woman in
business is not the easiest thing and
it's it's really important for us to
create more women leaders in our
community I'm Cynthia Vanek I'm Alum of
USC Marshall School of Business this
initiative provides a platform for me to
give back to the causes that I care
deeply about I want to help our students
prepare for life after graduation and I
want to show them what leadership as a
woman looks like what we're trying to do
is create a ripple effect to help all
women future Trojans succeed in the
world
I would like to pass the torch by making
sure that we are educating the next
generation of Women Business Leaders The
Trojan community and the torch
initiative offers a way to really align
your giving with your values to direct
your gift to the cause that moves you
most and join a group of pretty
incredible women who are here to
exchange ideas amplify each other's
voices and hopefully to drive the change
that we wish to see in the world I would
encourage anyone that's interested in
giving back to the school to get
involved to join us in our mission to
give back to the students we need
everyone's
help
for
